@@AuntAlnico4 More specifically, these are like slightly modernised, but also slightly scaled down Vettas, which were great full modelling amps from the 2000s.
Love my 240 combo. Lead, JCM-900 Distorted and Angel P-Ball are my favorite amps so far, they all definitely have a place. Theyre so much going on, I havent gotten to everything yet.
Why is it even a thing that everyone is comparing the PRESET, STOCK Line 6 JCM800 sound to the Marshall JCM800? The line 6 produces a comparable sound, but needs tweaking. Edit and fine tune that preset to match the Marshall JCM800, then store/save it!!! And is the line 6 on classic mode after the firmware update???

I would say run the Spider and the Marshall head through the same marshal cab while comparing the two...This would be a fairer comparison. I also think you had the gain a little hotter on the spider. Best to compare them with the gain and EQ as close as possible.
I'm able to simulate my JCM 800 pretty well with the Spider V. A lot depends on good EQ-ing. Im really amazed at all the great tones I can get. Although I've not used one on a gig at band volume yet.. that's the true test of any amp for me.
i have both the Spider V 240 and 120 combo's to the version 2 specification and love them to bits. You do need the FBV3 floorboard to make best use of the functionality and just makes life so much easier for programme changes, looper and wah/volume. Pre-sets are OK, but you can modify them and save the changes....they are so simple to use. Plug the G10 wireless transmitter into your guitar and no more cables to worry about.
Interesting comparison. Maybe it would be better to compare the two heads with the same miced cab.. Usually the main weakness in the Spider / Pod technology is the cab sim... With a real cab it might sound more realistic than through the XLR out.
I have a question! The line 6 you didn't use a cabinet but what about the Marshall? Maybe the little diferences frequences between both are the speakers, one has tweeter and other not, isn't it?
Definitely have to switch the Line 6 to classic mode instead of full range to get decent tone out of it, it is one of the key features of the mkii software. That said, tubes still rule, by far.
Line 6 has really turned it around with these V MKII amps. I have the V60 MKII and love it. It has way more features, amp models and all the classic FX's anyone can ask for, and you can really dial in a great tone, not to mention downloading user presets from the cloud. Some really great MESA BOOGIE MK IV's out there. Having said all this, recently I purchased a pristine condition Line 6 TubeTone AX2 212 modeller from 1998, and even came with the pedalboard, and the guy who sold it to me also included a DIY binder with the presets as the binder cover for quick reference, and printed manual sheets inside...All for a whopping steal of $120.00 via Offerup. The best $120 I've ever spent on music gear. Definitely an awesome amp, and even gives my all tube Marshall 40 watt amp a run for its money. It is incredibly versitile, and even by today's standards, sounds very very good. Even better than Marshall's CODE series amp which I've also owned. Line 6 is great, I don't know why some people knock them. Great video btw!
I like how he plays all the tunes and he screws it up A bit but he still looks great doing it by the way just subscribe to your Channel anyways keep up the great work and it looks like you got a lot of toys to play with so have fun take care and have a great day
That Spider MkII could definitely be dialed in to sound like the wonderful JCM-800. You're right, it sounds very close and for the price point of the Spider you just can't beat it.
I primarily own and gig with tube amps, Marshall & Fender, depending on the music. HOWEVER, I recently purchased one of these Spider V 240HC heads used, mostly for headphone and low volume practice at home. I've not been a fan of Line 6 since the original POD and thus was shocked that I ended up liking one of these heads. It's actually a really fun amp. I also own a 1983 Marshall JCM800 50 watt head. The Spider 240HC's JCM800 preset doesn't sound very close to the real thing. That doesn't mean that the Spider V 240HC isn't a super fun head, particularly since it has built-in speakers and a lot of features. SO I've you're a hopeless gear addict like me and own some serious Marshall tube heads and one of these digital devils (and a Boss Katana 50) for home low volume practice and direct recording seems "reasonable and perfectly normal." ;-)
This is how the TAB key flashes. You press the button with the house until the setting Tab Light On / Off comes, then go to off and the annoying blinking is off.
Great video, brother ! We use a 20 watt spider mk 2 at church the sound is amazing. They are pretty loud, too it keeps up with my drumming.. I was so impressed I ordered the 60 watt spider mk 2 it's coming in the mail today. I'll try some BB , Albert King, and SRV on the 60 watt. Keep Rockin bro! - Chicago bluesman.
Serious comment this time: does the Spider V Mk. II have an option to control the Presence of the amp? If so, dialing it back a bit may clear up the fizziness and make it sound closer to the real thing. Any chance we could get a second comparison video if this is the case?
Maybe late on this answer, but yes. You need to use the Spider Remote software to edit the Presence. Has a drag feature onscreen, so you can adjust between 0% and 100%
@@jaxchiro no you don’t need to. You just hit the edit button dude. You can change just about anything on the amp as you can on the app with the edit button.
Nice job on the work put into doing this video. This amp doesnt sound nearly as bad as the previously released ones. I am again left with the same impression as before ... some presets n such sound good over the xlr outputs (which is what you want IF thats how your gonna mainly be recording from it by). BUT again there also seems to be some weak stuff at times in there. The marshall vs L6 emulation marshall ... the L6 definatly has something off to it that does make it noticable vs the real thing. At the end of the day ... while this might be 1/2 the cost of the Helix product ... they NEED to translate the Helix stuff into the Spider series to make it a sucessful product. Otherwise .. the spider series will continue to carry the same stimatism it always has since day 1 of it ... that its crap. Bonus points for the headbangin/feelin it L !! ;) :D
Great stuff, I enjoyed this video and that head does sound great I can see you had fun playing through it and made it look easy to find what ever sound you want I want the foot switch to make things easy great job and I will look for your next time. thanks
Are there good "tutorials" on getting everything you can out of this amp? How do you sing and play guitar with this amp. Easy question/easy answers? I bought the Line 6 Spider 120 V MK ii. Thank you
It models well, is a stretch. Recording can be tricky, direct outs to DAW are nice, I go to a mixer. Mic up to this amp is not recommended, in my opinion.
@@thetonekingofficial Very cool I thought that would be the case but does it matter which wireless unit you use? Thats what trip me up about the set up. It has all you would ever need really , I wish you had spent a moment on the Uni-Vibe fx. I bet sounds great thru a 4x12 cab.
You're awesome. Do you know if you can play mp3's through this so I can jam along from the same speaker? if so, is classic or full range better since I'm using an actual song and guitar at the same time? I'm guessing full range?
I played for over three hours when I got the amp home. I returned it the next day. That damn tweeter was drek and it broke up with simple a volume boost. The firmware update helped this model but feh!
You were using analog boost pedals into this !? 🤷🏻♀️ Not recommended. Other than that I bet that 3 hours strait of practice was the most you had in Year's so that's what this amp does for me, it's freaking amazing but you need the stereo amp everytime !
I agree man. Versatility means nothing if what you are getting sounds like this brittle fizzy cheap sounding trash. There are quite a few SS amps out there that can emulate the warm overdriven tone of a tube amp but this is certainly NOT one of them. A used tube amp and a used multi effects pedal may cost 100 more but would blow this away.
@@badhabit8824 Tube amps are overrated dude . You can't play them at home without getting the neighbours anger :-D . Also tube amps are limited to it's own sounds. This Amp you can play at home (bedroom) and also at stage with a cabinet . And you can practise with the same sound at home , impossible with a tube, they need to be played loud to get their features.
@@antonwilding9744 it’s not impossible to play a tube amp at home at all. I have a 120 watt tube head and play at home all the time, my wife in the next room doesn’t even complain.
I could tell even on my phone speaker that the jcm has a fatter tone and the line 6 was more buzzy if that makes sense. That being said I dont have a problem with line 6. I a live setting you probably wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. But side by side you can hear it. Great video!
I have an HX Stomp and I had a Kemper. Digital is like watching a live concert being streamed and analog is like actually being at the show if that makes sense? Technically they sound the same but it's really not. I love using the Stomp to jam around the house but I much rather plug into my Marshall or my KSR.
So everyone here is going to judge the modeled, PRESET sound vs the actual amp, without ONE, SINGLE, tweak in the preset settings? "This out-of-the-box preset doesn't exactly match the real amp, so this one is trash" come on people use your ears, don't be lazy. Actually dial in the amps settings
@@ryanlord6286 Agreed. The modeled Marshall sounded fairly close albeit with more treble. There's a couple of things I always notice on subjects like these. A lot of these 'shredtastic' guitarists with 'perfect' hearing who appear suffer from extreme snobbery when it comes to their precious amps. Most of them don't seem understand the usage and audience for this kind of amp and lastly if one would use any (Line 6 et al) modeling amp in a gig setting not even the most seasoned concert visitor would be able to differentiate nor care about the 'sound' of a modeling amp. This is a whole lot of 'I spent 500 bucks on a tube amp and I'm b*tthurt that I have to miss out on a few dozen of modeled amp sounds to play with in my bedroom!' (Because that's where most of these guitar heroes use their amp anyways).
I bet I could get the spider to sound pretty damn close, if not basically indistinguishable to the real amp, at least on recording if nothing else. The cool thing about the spider is how versatile it is and can give you pretty much any sound you can imagine. The downside is that you do need to know what you're doing to get it to sound good for your guitar and playing style. The presets are there as a starting place, not a one size fits all
In real life this sounds just as good as the Marshall but what were hearing is the cab sim stuff he's using to record this, same with the Marshall that's why it sounded the way it did. Trust me ! Both the jcm800 and the line 6 stereo 240 MK2 sounds killer in the room ! That line 6 is made to record and should sound better the way it's being recorded with speaker software. Compare s real speaker being mixed mic and preamp and the Marshall will probably win but that's 2 schools of recording !
A lot of those same presets are on my spider 3 hd150. The ones you ran through that are on my ole faithful, sound pretty much identical. At least on this video. Like Master of puppets, Barracuda, Purple haze. I know the technology is way more up to date, but despite what everyone has said about line 6 in general, I am glad that I bought the hd150 half stack about 15 yrs. ago. It still fn rocks and is/was totally underrated. Just my humble opinion. 🧑🎤🎶🎸🎶🕺
Why not compare the JCM800 using the classic mode through the same cab as the real JCM800? did not even review classic mode which is the new feature of MKII as the hardware did not change.
Thx for the video. What are we listening to? USB or XLR out or MIC's in front of the amp? I guess the main update here is to choose from FRFR or switch off the tweeter. Maybe in another video?
Nice demo. I have the 60W version at home. It's great for home practice, unfortunately it's unusable for live play. Why? Well, it doesn't really have the dynamics that real guitar amps have. In addition, the two-way speakers are far from full-range (especially in bass frequencies), it's a very harsh low-end. It would be better to have a guitar speaker there (as it was in the IV series). 2 stars out of 5 :-)
Good question. I believe it doesn't because those line out are irrelevant to the stage volume so if those are speakers you are using instead of the 412 it should still work to record and if you want to speakers shut off you just turn down the master !
The way I set it up was all tone controls on 7 (the way I like the Marshall). I could have easily backed off the treble / presence on the Spider, and it would have been spot on. (Thought of that after the video, sadly).
I used one in my cover band for 4 years and it worked out great, and I got a lot of compliments for my settings. I did retube the amp with Groove Tubes though, which improved the sound. And my clean, crunch, dist, and lead channels were kept as simplified as possible. I ran it through a Mesa 4x12 cab as well, which obviously added to the sound improvement. I never had any mechanical issues with it, or ever felt the need to bring a backup amp either.
I,ve owned a line six spider ll 4 12 150 watt cab for years used it in my band and the other guitar player had a Marshall 4 12 cab and he was always jealous of the lead sounds and clean and all the over tone I got out of it and it kicked ass and cut threw way better then the Marshall , you have to dial these pre sets in and adjust the sounds to your liking ,you also can make your own pre sets ,and you can reduce all that fuzzy sound and add full sounds , that's what this guy ain,t telling you all modeling amps pre set sound like crap,I had mine over ten years and it still cranks and I have it dialed in to the sounds that I like and work, and it kicked ass in every band I,ve played in ,still to this day the old guitar player In my band just loves the sound out of my line six better the his Marshall,,,so for all you haters you don,t know how to dial them in and you most likely Don,t own one so ya don,t really know,or ya don,t know how to adjust and tweek the sound,I can,t speak to the new spider V, but my second generation ,does not over heat does not have all the apps and other junk it,s more simple ,but still great effects and is a work horse ,I own also vox ac15 and the 30 tube amps and many other amps and the are great , but i grew up in the 80,s and love the sound of the 80,s rock guitars and leads and I get every bit of that with my line six , but as I said mine is the spider ll 412 half stack 150 watts second generation and have the sbv large board with the volume and wah 4 channels with the stomp button and bank and other Goody,s on it ,and it still works great also
Maybe shoulda done this as a blind comparison at the onset. But, yeah, i agree with everyone else-the Spider sounded fizzy and inarticulate from my point of view. The JCM didn't slay me, though.
Cmon dude yer starting to sound very sloppy again nice sounds for the amp but don't get lazy play her like your loving every bit of her tone thank you u got warm for a minute 😢love yer channel
No it doesn't lol. I've tried to love these so many times. The problem is I go plug into one of my tube heads and never look back. Just lacking chest thumping girth.
Thanks for this video. I have had the same amp for almost 20 years now. I have been wanting to get into a different style of amp and your video inspired me so much I went to Sweetwater and bought a new amp and guitar 😳😁. Keep rocking 🤘🏻

Man I was really really hoping that Fluff's clean preset was going to be dirty. That would have been hilarious! xD
Very good demo. Thank you
This is how the TAB key flashes.
Bonus points for the headbangin/feelin it L !! ;) :D
Great stuff, I enjoyed this video and that head does sound great I can see you had fun playing through it and made it look easy to find what ever sound you want I want the foot switch to make things easy great job and I will look for your next time. thanks
Sounded great, my only issue with digital amps is how does it react with pedals?
You can pull apart the TRS orTS 1/4 and flip them around to get different digital pedals to work together I have found, might work with modeling amps
@@bloodybanner7167 are you taking about the aux in the back ?
Or the intuit in front that you also charge you wireless unit with !?
Great video TTK 🤘🤘 🤘🤘 🤘
Are there good "tutorials" on getting everything you can out of this amp? How do you sing and play guitar with this amp. Easy question/easy answers? I bought the Line 6 Spider 120 V MK ii. Thank you
wish the volumes were even. Definitely would have helped
Sounds good to me, I’m all about light weight gear, so something that can do everything works for me,
It models well, is a stretch. Recording can be tricky, direct outs to DAW are nice, I go to a mixer. Mic up to this amp is not recommended, in my opinion.
How are connected to the head? No 1/4" plug in the input for the wireless unit.
The head has a built in wireless receiver. I'm wireless to it. Stock feature on this amp.
OMG! That spider would have been so me back when I was like 14 telling everyone how it sounds just like the tea thing! Lmao!
You're awesome. Do you know if you can play mp3's through this so I can jam along from the same speaker? if so, is classic or full range better since I'm using an actual song and guitar at the same time? I'm guessing full range?
You can. Full range or classic mode doesn't have any effect on the mp3 audio.
Yes it does that and yes it sounds way better than any other amp since it's full range 😜 duh !
For $500, Id honestly either go for a used head.. Or pay a bit more for a head from a builder like Ceriatone.
And you wouldn't get any of the versatility.
Ur lost
I wanted the spider to sound good but the real amp sounds so much better.
Not for the same price it doesn't.
Fun piece of gear to play with for hours I’m sure.
Yes it provides hours of practice with drum tracks and looper pretty powerful little amp !
I love mine !
I'm saving up to buy one of these + FBV 3 + G10 relay transmitter. Cant wait!
Since it has the Left and Right outputs. Is it a stereo algorithm output?
Why not compare the JCM800 using the classic mode through the same cab as the real JCM800? did not even review classic mode which is the new feature of MKII as the hardware did not change.
Marshall, Flawless Victory
How would active pickups pair with this amplifier?
The Line 6 sounds like a solid state amp with a fuzz box
The Line 6 sounds good, just a little off idk, maybe it sounds better in the room. I usually really like the fizzy distortion, maybe the reverb...
Wouldn’t it help to put a better speaker in?
sounds like a swarm of bees.
Thx for the video. What are we listening to? USB or XLR out or MIC's in front of the amp? I guess the main update here is to choose from FRFR or switch off the tweeter. Maybe in another video?
Watch the entire video instead of skipping through it and you'll get the answer.
@@JustinLesamiz i dont think so
The 6 sounds tighter, but the JCM has more purr.
I see your wearing your new strap... very cool... ;) I love it
2 stars out of 5 :-)
Hey TK, when plugging the amp through the XLR outputs does that kill the built-in speakers on the head?
Good question.
I believe it doesn't because those line out are irrelevant to the stage volume so if those are speakers you are using instead of the 412 it should still work to record and if you want to speakers shut off you just turn down the master !
Can you record a loop with one sound then play over with a different setup?
You sure can Kate.
Every model except for the 30
Great video I have a deposit on that same Amp waiting in a store for me 👍👍👍
What is the best solid state amp
Crate gx130c or the orange super crush are probably the best. Oh and a peavey XXL.
I didn't think the line 6 amp sounded like the real amp at all. Maybe if it was dialed in differently.
It says Brit j 600 not a Marshall jcm 800
However I am going to buy this amp. 😂
What line 6 floorboard model is that on top of the amp?
Rolly.....its the Line 6 FBV3
Marshall tube is much better. The spiders filtering can uninspire.
Spider sounds crackly compared to the JCM 800 MARSHALL but very very close... to my old ears.
That digital brittleness yeah but thru a 2x12 or 4x12 that may be smoothed out. The audience wouldn't notice.
The way I set it up was all tone controls on 7 (the way I like the Marshall). I could have easily backed off the treble / presence on the Spider, and it would have been spot on. (Thought of that after the video, sadly).
@@thetonekingofficial The presets were quite close, I thought.
Sounds so good. You keep that one, send me the JCM 800 😄Nice play through!
One tone that is winner is jungle slash. And the other tone that is good is line 6 bottom.
Has anybody try'd the bognar/line 6 spider 100w valve head?
The Marshall blows that line6 away, not even close
Line 6 cannot seem to get rid of that digital high frequency plastic-y fizzy sound on their high gain tones. So frustrating because it's damn close.
I have the line6 240 v and it sounds better than my soldano slo100
That sounds like a modeller from 20 years ago very digital sounding
Sold
Cmon dude yer starting to sound very sloppy again nice sounds for the amp but don't get lazy play her like your loving every bit of her tone thank you u got warm for a minute 😢love yer channel
TK🤘...
Quite a bit of difference in the fuzz, treble and warmth, cant beat the real thing.
The tone is there , but that darn fizzy-ness....digital obvious
Not even close. JCM so much better. Doesn't matter the difference in price.
Of course it matters. It also matters how much more versatile this thing is.
Lol, anyone else start singing "You take my life but I'll take yours too..."??
Sounds kind of sterile I think fenders on the right line with their new lamps but they’re too expensive
JCM 800 from marshall sounded way better than Line 6.
Com on tone king u can play better then that ive heard u yer tone is off, an forget doing Eddie usethe samples they sound cool now yer rockin it
No it doesn't lol.
