I was a policeman in Essex Street in 1960, these pictures bring back good memories of lovely people

Born in the Dingle in 1951, I was determined to travel and live in a beautiful place. Left for Australia in 76 and lived an amazing life yet when I see these photos, they almost bring me to tears. I have nothing but beautiful memories and a sense of innocence of the time and strong community when looking at them...guess you can take the lad out of Liverpool but you can't take Liverpool out of the lad eh :) Thanks for the photos Tom.
I left Liverpool for Canada.. And know I'm back I'm loving every second..... Believe me this is the most beautiful place on earth..

I too was born in Dingle in 1951, near the Flat Iron.
I was born in Sefton General 1959.we lived in South street park road end.was a nice place to live .sadly we moved to croxteth.still miss it after all these years the world seemed a far better place then.i remember walking to school at St.finbars.great memories.
Incredible pics, some of which I've seen before. I never got to see the overhead railway as it was dismantled two years before I was born. A sad loss to our city.
I was born in West Derby in 1970. Remember our lovely green buses? I revisited recently and was appalled to see what has happened to Liverpool 1. They have gutted the place. How many grade 1 listed buildings, including Quiggins where I used to work, were torn down? I literally got lost trying to find my way back to civilisation.
Why would anyone give these wonderful images a 'thumbs down'? I don't get it.. :(

Thank you so much to Tom Brown. I was born in 1944, Emerald Street, off Cockburn Street. I had such a wonderful childhood with my two sisters and two brothers, plus a wonderful mum and dad who worked so hard for us. Thank you for the happy memories Tom.
My mother worked at Wapping station in 1954 in the ticket office , she lived in Chester Street with my dad after they married in the army in 1953 in Thurrock, Essex. , my dad was born in Beaufort street 1933 and went to st. malachy's, RIP MUM AND DAD miss u and all your memories of Dingle .

i was born and bred in liverpool 8 , i lived in bowring street went to parkhill road school till 1970 then went to dingle vale school for 2 years then we had to move cos they were pulling our house down and we moved to wavertree , brought back some wonderful memories thanks tom
Parkhill Road - Mrs Wood, Mr Milroy, Mrs Forster Mrs George - thanks to them 6 of us in my year passed the 11+ and went to grammar schools

This music is Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar - very atmospheric, but I always associate it with the American Civil War as it was used in the amazing documentary on it by Ken Burns.
I enjoyed this and brought back many memories, I was born in a pub in Clevedon street off Park Road and facing the "holy land" called The Castle Inn, learned to swim at Steble street baths and played in all those streets from there doqn to Otterspool and the other way right into town, used to go missing all day when kids were ok to wander

Thanks for a superb video. Brings back some happy memories, we used to go to Stebby baths with the school and I can still smell that fresh coffee in coopers in town. What a wonderful shop that was, it had a lovely polished copper topped counter. Those were the days.
My Gran and Grandad lived in Caryl Grove and some of my happiest years were spent visiting them going to the docks and looking at the engine sheds at Brunswick. Wondeful place. Thanks.

I lived Erith Street until 1969 when unfortunately as part of the so called slum clearance we were moved to Huyton. Have such fond memories of Liverpool 8 and seeing video of Park Road brought all back. I remember Capaldis, Lee's pet shop, Butchers Ted Aples and cousins cake shop. My dad every Friday after finishing work would go Castle Inn Pub or the Criterion. Thanks for uploading video
Thank you Tommy for this , my mam and dad were from here in Dingle , I grew up in Serra Leone i was born in 1965 but my sister was born at home in Liverpool. My dad always told me about Liverpool and our home , he worked at camel Laird then went to sea for Blue funnel and Elder Dempster , he was chief engineer on the Appa M V Aureol .
We came home in 1976 , Hahaha he said because he missed the city and Liverpool F C .
im so made up that ive found this because it means alot to me to see where i came from. I live away now but still get back at every oppertunity to see my family and go to watch my Liverpool F C .

Great memories I was born in Berkeley street in the 40s and my grandmother lived there until shortly before the area was demolished as someone else commented Liverpol 8 didn't have the greatest reputation but I loved it as a kid and new some great people

WOOOW.... All these years, we lived in Park Road just across the road from the Tabernacle until 1972, I used to go to Windsor Street Primary School which still exist till this day. We moved to the Birmingham and back to Liverpool again. Everything in the documentary just looks great and brings back beautiful childhood memories. The Dingle area, the city centre (Renshaw Street) everything in the video brought back great memories. Definitely LIKE.
Outsiders call Liverpool 8 every name under the sun, but for those who grew up in that area, it was a community of people. We were not just neighbours, but we became an extended family.
Black and white lived together, side by side.with hardly any problem at all. I well remember the happy times spent in Liverpool 8 - especially Berkley Street were I lived, and Windsor Street, and the people who have now passed on.
Those days were innocent and carefree. I am not saying there were not any problems, of course there were, but we stuck together as a community and overcame those problems when they arose. I long for those days back again, but they are now gone, forever.
You never know what you had until it has gone. This video really made me long for the past and the people I miss now, both family and friends who are long dead.

Now most of the white people have moved away it's an embarrassing shit hole and if you think it's not an embarrassing shit hole you must not know the same L8 as I do. Anyone who can say that is a desirable place to live must have shockingly low standards. Shame for us real scousers with Lancashire, Irish, Welsh, Manx mix that we lost an entire area to degenerate behaviour among immigrant dissenters. The whole area is a total disaster. Churches lost, whole streets boarded up, insane burglary statistics. If you call that success you need your head examining.

Great pictures. My mum (born in 1930) grew up in the Dingle and I spent a lot of time at my nan's house as a child, in Clevedon Street, off Park Road. My mum and uncles have wonderful memories of the Dingle! X

My mum and dad had 2 records shops in Park Road in the 60's & 70's. One was opposite Beresford Road. wIshed I had photos
I bought my 1st LP from the shop opposite Beresford Road.......The Drifters....mid 60's....Thanks for reminding me......Or at least I think it was....unless there was another record shop on Park Road around about that location.

Absolutely beautiful. I went to Tocky Tech in the 60's. So grey and drab. Now live in the brightest and sunnyest places on Earth, Perth West Aus. "What an remarkable world". The choice of music and presentation brought tears to my eyes.
My god! Steble street; I used to go swimming there on a Sunday morning with my Dad and brother when I was 8 or 9 in the early 70s. We used to go to the laundry afterwards and get tea and toast. I only lived across the road in Vronhill Street. Those were the days. My Mum and Dad died a few years back and this brings back so many happy childhood memories. Thanks for the watch.

my partner Mr stages says the womans name was Mrs Bowie, apparently she knew not everyone could afford to buy tea & toast so she would occasionally quietly give it to her poorest customers free.
I lived in Claribel street and also used to go to steble st swimming baths as a child, great memories.

Liverpool 8 was no different than many parts of Liverpool. I grew up in Edge Hill..by Botanic park..same neighbourhoods..people community terraced streets etc. Thats long gone now...all those areas are run down now full of crime and rubbish on the streets.. my mum use to scrub the step and wash outside on the pavement..leave the door ajar unlocked..who could do that today?

Hello...I'm Ann Doyle..late of Huyton with Roby....in 1959 aged 18 I married a wonderful man named Tom Doyle of Wolfe Street Dingle Liverpool 8 ....he was eldest of a family of 5 boys and 1 girl named Dolly.... their mum and dad were Mary and Tom.....Tom and I managed to buy a house in the holy land...David Street ..Tom was a Merchant seaman and a the time we met he was on athe "Empress boats" to Canada and back every few weeks...we raised 5 children...Tom passed away in April 2017 ..I'm still in the Dingle as our children are all fairly close by in Dingle...Aigburth . Allerton etc...I've seen so many changes in Dingle over the years....some for the better but many not.. the closeness of communities has mostly gone and anyone,ne coming back to it today would not recognise it...so it's all the more important that its streets...homes...way of life has been preserved on film like this....so many happy memories to treasure... thank you so much ..

We used to come down from Scotland in the school holidays to stay with them; I had some great times; Sefton Park; going down to the docks with my cousins who worked there; great sense of community then (mid/late 50's); the family were moved when the area was redeveloped and off they went to

Brings back such sweet memories. Park Road was so bubbly then with its many small shops. Sad to : they've only just demolished the Odeon in London Road.

I grew up in Warwick street in the 60's and my best mate Lived in Warwick gardens, another lived in Carl Gardens and another lived in King Gardens, Move to Upper Warwick street in my teens so remember the area well nice to see some great photos bringing back good memories.

a lived on Windsor st1960-74.a remember the chippy and fruit and veg shop.betting shop.going to park road with my mum.
I was a bobby on the Windsor St beat in the early 60's. I have fond memories of the chippy, he occasionally gave me free fish and chips when I was on night shift. I'd stand on the corner of North Hill St eating them, they were hidden under my cape.....Loved that area.....
That wasn't Barbara incidentally - It's Brian, Barbara is my wife....

Great Video Tom!!! Would you have a still of MILTON'S on Warwick street. I worked there when I was 15. It was three shops in one, the back was a pawn shop the middle was second hand store where they sold the unclaimed items from the pawn shop and the front was a retail cloths shop. Thanks

Nan ran Digby House (near Park Road) in the 60's and spent my first few years living there had two Aunties who ran The Poets Corner near the Holy Land so lots of memories with the slides nice one.
I remember the Poet's well, it was the only pub I knew of who had the tennis on a colour telly...circa 71...

The name was Hornby do you recall anybody by that name. My mom Margaret Hornby was born in 1927. It was my grand father Albert Hornby lived there with his Mom Alice and dad Henery Hornby

That building on Renshaw Street is still there and still named Grand Central Hall. It is the home of Quigans these days.

Frank Byrne Hi Frank was trying to get info on the Hornby family tree. Think grandfather was Albert Hornby? Gran was Rigby? Not sure? I went back to great grandfather Henry Hornby?

I was looking into the Hornby tree on ancestry.com and found that Albert was the son of Henry Hornby who was living at the time in Hartnup street which is right next to Liverpool's football ground. I did my DNA test with 23+me and we have a second cousin Ken Dugdale he Lived in Kirkby. Yea i would like more info if you have it. Ken takes the Hornby tree back as far as 1697. Can give you more info if you like.

Does anyone remember the name of the music and poetry club in Liverpool 8 in the late sixties? People like Adrian Henri, Mike Evans, Mike Hart, Roger McGough and Ricky Noyce performed there.
There was one in the Domestic Mission on Mill Street. Jaqui and Bridie ran it.

I have many good illustrated books of old Liverpool, and I've watched many such videos on You Tube too. But I've yet to find a good picture or vid of Vauxhall road, and the roads running off it--like Portland Street, which is where my mother was born in 1905. ANYONE ??

Very nice video, Tom. What was the music that you used? I particularly enjoyed the first song. Also, your video seems to impart that we have lost some civic dignity in the case of Liverpool. The older scenes do portray a more tidy and cared for streetscape.
