    What did you ever find out on that big rock at 9:00? the grainy-ish texture kinda reminded me of some lower silica novaculite but it wasn't powdery looking. Did it look like that all the way through?

      That one was cracked and full of concrete, if I remember correctly. That was a long time ago. I knapped some nodules recently that were exactly like that one. It does respond well to heat.

    Make the film steady so that people do not get motion sickness.

    JackCrafty, I'm Native American and it makes me proud to see Flintknappers like yourself pass on a fading tradition. Thanks for sharing not only this video but all of your videos.....

    Please get yourself a proper rock or masonry hammer for breaking rocks. Regular carpentry/utility hammers aren't designed for that, nor are the heads tempered sufficiently to prevent metal spalling when hitting something as hard as even a relatively soft sedimentary rock.

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Masonry hammers are not designed for spalling flint.

      @@KnapperJackCrafty Nor are ball-peen hammers. What is your point?

    Nice find. I'm in Georgia and wish I could find some flint. All I find is fine grain quartzite. It's what I learned on. Love your videos, and they have helped me a ton. Thanks!!

      +River Valley Survival and Bushcraft Thank you! I've heard that there is "Coastal Plains chert" or "Ocala chert" in South-west Georgia.

    Patrick we love your stuff but you should have pointed out to the new folks that with a few exceptions Texas is where you find knappable stone just laying around near the surface.

      +kay cee Well, with all the flintknappers in Texas the flint is getting scarce. This area was unusual because of the new construction and the debris from the stone cutting was all over the place. There is flint in many areas of the country if you keep and eye out... especially at landscape supply yards. The one place that I know that there is very little flint is the North East (where I grew up). But that area is full of quartz and slate, which can be made into arrowheads.

    Best thing to do is test the chert with your striker steel ( or use a high carbon steel knife ) for spark.

    Great information. Do you know where and what kind of flint or chert can i find around Cisco Tx. ?

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. I've never found any flint anywhere along Interstate 20. I would check the landscape supply yards. Ask for "bull gravel". That's another name for chert nodules.

      +yoomd1 Try the smaller cobbles. I've got some pretty good chert from a friend in California but it comes in small sizes.

      JackCrafty just a question tho, do u know any good knapping rocks in san diego, all rocks are brittle near i live.

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +yoomd1 Nope, sure don't. I know a guy in San Diego that send me rocks sometimes but it's really tough stuff. Mostly like the grainy stuff in this video (that really big chunk that I chipped the corner off) but darker.

      If all else fails I can highly recommend discarded 4x8 glass tabletop. I've snagged any number of those down here in South Florida. Even jalousey window slats are workable.

    Would you put the larger pieces in your turkey roaster for heat treatment? If yes, how long would you cook them after drying?

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andi 8908 Yesterday, I broke the largr pieces into spalls. The average size of these spalls is about as large as the palm of my hand. I will cook them for 3 hours at 350 degrees (tonight). The largest piece is mostly unusable quartzite-like material but I am going to heat some spalls of that also to see if it responds.

    Absolutely lucky to be able to live in the states with all its resources, I am learning lots about knapping from your channel man, is there any chance I could buy some river cane from you and a arrow head of obsidian ? And how much would that cost to the u.k? I can't get any river cane to make some authentic native American arrows , very skilled and dedicated man .luke
