      Thanks Joshua, I've been stuck at home overseeing this big construction project we have going on and by that I mean making sure my dogs don't kill the workers so I've been very productive and I'm so happy people are enjoy these types of episodes :). Have a great weekend brother.

    The absolute best photographers out there are largely unknown. One of the things that makes their work great is that they don't set out to please anyone but themselves. They produce work that isn't like anyone else's work and they do it by not trying to impress anyone. And they make a good living at it.

    As a very fidgety girl... Lense caps are awesome! They keep my finguies active. Besides... Just the other day I learned I could use the lense cap to bounce the pop up flash to the ceiling and get some soft light. So... Lens cap for the win!

      Lens cap people are also also excepted here but they are quietly judged :).

      To be fair... I'm fidgeting with some magnets rn. I think I need ANYTHING to fidget with and lens caps just serve that purpose FOR ME.

    Great video Justin! I was really surprised by the "get rid of your lens caps" makes total sense and yes always worried about where to put it... I will definitely be getting rid of the lens cap. Lots of great tips/commandments.

      Great points. Unfortunately, even if I follow them all, my composition skills will still suck. I guess I haven't reached the 10,000 rule yet. Or maybe I will never get past mediocre. But I love the experience of just getting out with my camera anyway, so I've got that going for me 😅.

    All good stuff. Cheers. The one commandment that got me thinking was about always having your camera switched on and ready. I've missed many photo opportunities because my camera has been in my bag. I prefer a wrist strap for my mirrorless cameras, but often have it in my hip bag when transporting. I may now consider also taking a neck strap so I have options.

    Hi Justin, nice videos, these are why we take you seriously (not serious, you weren't an English major it seems). Reading jay maisel's book, interestingly he only shoots with a zoom and never does 'projects.' Rather he shoots whatever interests him so perhaps he's not a good role model. Anyway, you offer alot of good advice but you're clearly a believer in the 'always be selling' mantra.

    One of the biggest commandments should be - shoot a shitload of pix. If you take the time to take a look at even the greatest photographers of all time their shooting ratio is enormous, absolutely enormous. Saul Leiter for instance, one of the greatest street photographers left in the region of 400,000 negs, yet he is known for a few hundred images. His shooting ratio of average to great was probably in the region of 2000 to 1. The same goes for all the rest of the photographers you love. Another for instance - I'm a huge fan of Terry O'Neill (he of the iconic Faye Dunaway image) and bought one of his books about Bond; all the images he took of the various Bond characters. There's hardly a memorable pic in the entire book. So just remember most of your images will be pretty meh if not crap and only one, every so often, if you're lucky, will be any good.

    Yours is one of only three photography channels I bother to watch because the it is pretty much the norm for the pictures taken by most TH-cam channels to be frustratingly bad.

    I have the lens cap on my lens when it's in the bag. But when I take my camera out of the bag the lens cap comes off and goes into the bag. If I have my camera out, there's no lens cap on the lens. But I wouldn't throw them away, they're an extra layer of protection when the lens is in the bag.

    What's your number 1 rule?

    • @bugsybunny398
      @bugsybunny398 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My number one rule is to know my gear, i.e., know my camera and how to set it up for what I am using it for. Learn its strengths and weaknesses and adapt accordingly. I shoot both medium-format and Apsc cameras, and those cameras require a vastly different approach. I laugh when TH-camrs test a medium-format camera and compare it to their Sony full-frame. Love your work, mate.

      Accurately represent your subject and avoid assumptions. Just because someone looks homeless does not mean they are and just because they are wearing a suit does not mean they are successful. Writing proper captions will force you to find out the facts and often lead to a more interesting story when you publish your images, even if it’s just a social media post.

      @@jerry2357 Oh of course I agree with you both. It just piqued my interest when Justin said it for some reason, and I thought what if you are God? I just find the concept fascinating. When we say I'm not God does that presume there is a God. You know I might say I'm not Donald Trump and that's because there really is a Donald Trump. But as you say, wrong forum. Apologies. I think I'm a frustrated philosopher. I love hypotheticals.
