John was a glorious drummer to listen to...he made the songs what they are with his exciting and raucous style... I've developed my style on the basis of his and the influence of his playing is still reverberating today... great that you chose this for people to learn 👊🏻😁

So good and super clear. Thanks.. Of the impactful drum intros I love.. Nowadays a woman's gotta hit a man to make him know she's there
A Beefheart track on Clear Spot. I can't get the steady swing feel but I love it so much.. I should work out a way to put that beat on a loop and listen to it all day.. The beat is basically repeated throughout the track with just a few machine gun snares towards the climax... It's another simple effective and very tricky to play swing beats.. Makes me wanna cry, Do you think I need to relax into such a long swing pattern , just keep at it? or slow it right down? That's very difficult, slow swing.
One other drum intro that makes the track is on Father cannot Yell. by CAN , it's just a single snare hit!! Perhaps it's the "A" of the 4 E, AN, A.. with the band coming in on the 1..?
Very distinctive, perhaps the record for shortest drum intro? CANs wonderful drummer was Jaki Leibzeit ... Beefheart had possibly 3 drummers Ed marimba Drumbo and John French. or was that Drumbo's real name? If anyone knows Beefhearts drummers from safe as milk to ice cream for crow I'd love to know.. Credit where credits due.. Such brilliant beats... I mean from Teraplane, Abba Zabba, Sun Zoom Spark click clack, circumstances Hothead, petrified forest, Ella guru, Trust us, tropical hotdog night, semi multi coloured Caucasian and many more captain Beefhearts drummers had to come up with so much original dynamic play it's unbelievable.. I think John French wrote transposed most of the songs from Don Van vliets piano playing and a lot of humming onto paoer!! Then HE taught the rest of the band..i declare most of the music including the drumming on lick my decals off baby is impossible to play!!.. Even the humanly possible drumming on the rest of Beefhearts albums is always brilliant.. After CAN, and the Raincoats In my opinion the best drumming is found on Beefhearts music... then talking heads, CRASS, African head charge, Lee Perry, the fall, wire, ELP, slits, The Allmans., Canned heat, muddy waters band, led zep, XTC,Joy division, Trex, Bowie, Gong, Joan Armatrading, This heat, Leonard Cohen, Doors, Beatles, king Crimson, Pere Ubu, Buzzcocks, Carpenters, Johnny Cash, Billy Cobham, Beach boys Eurythmics, JJ Cale, Faust, Bonzo Dog doo dah band, Sade, Amy Winehouse, early Elvis, Sparks, Kate Bush, staples, aretha, parliament Peter Gabriel, Art of noise, Dub syndicate, on u sounds, Hendrix, Rory, Howlin, Hooker, James Brown the velvet underground, Smiths, Magazine, Buzzcocks, Mud, Slade, Sweet, Roxy music, Queen, Motorhead, Bo Diddly, Rush, pogues, chas n dave, madness, poison girls, suzie souix, B52s Bob marley and lots of steel drum carnival reggae and dub Haitian Ra Ra bands, Africa hi life, south American bosa nova, salsa etc funk beats, motown quite a lot of jazz, canary islands folk and carnival.. In other words there's so much brilliant drumming that's occurred since the invention of the modern drumkit.. It's those non animal tight petrol chemical skins that must have changed everything, then the amplified electric guitars, keyboards and microphones to be heard over the new kits. The loudest music before then must've been a full orchestra playing beethoven or those clattering tibetan monks with massive gongs and bells and goat skinned drums and great long booming horns., only took us about a million years to shake the rafters with the likes of CRASS!!!
