  • In the video you'll find two guys from the workshop demonstrating the manual starting system on a restored Panther tank from the Second World War. This is to demonstrate how it would've been done in the field so viewers can appreciate the difficulties at the time as well as appreciate how far technology has come. Please note this isn't the only method to start the tank, the electric push start is demonstrated in my other video found here:
    • Electric Push-Start St...
    I have written a short descriptor below to provide some information on the tank present in this video for any viewer who isn't familier.
    The Panzerkampfwagen V Panther was a Medium Tank used by the German Wehrmacht during World War 2. It entered service during 1943 and served through til the end of the war. Around 6000 were produced in all varients during it's service period. It was armed with a 75mm KwK42 L/70 gun, a formidable armament, and was protected by armour of varying thicknesses and angles, with the front hull being 80mm sloped at 55 degrees and the turret ranging from 100-110mm. It was powered by a Maybach HL 230 P30 V12 water cooled 600hp petrol engine which gave it a top road speed of 46kmh or about 29mph. It had a crew of 5 operating it.
    The vehicle shown within this video was completed in the UK as part of a joint restoration project and now resides in The Australian Armour and Artillery Museum in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
    The views in the comments are solely the commenter's beliefs and opinions and in no way reflect my own.

    • @nahbro104
      @nahbro104 2 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      They were made to be very imposing and intimidating on the battlefield, sending fear into enemy tankers but as we advanced in technology we realised that a shorter tank with a lower profile is actually much more combat effective than one that tries to intimidate others. Im not saying modern tanks arent massive beacause they are but if we had the same mentality as back then our moder tanks would be even bigger

      @@nahbro104 you make no sense ... War tanks suppose to intimidate? How the f..you gonna carry on a heavy artillery In a small tank ? Yes light weight but vulnerable...panzer tiger...panzer leopard...huge steel demons almost impossible to penetrate doesn't matter what you shot to them ...war tanks aren't to intimidate they are made to eliminate resist and win the battle ...so yeah take a small tank to the battle field ...good luck

    • @smellslikeanvil9257
      @smellslikeanvil9257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@panzerwaffen2873 sir, intimidation tactics are always required for the battle
      but smaller objects are just harder to spot and strike, so tanks became tinier in height overtime cuz if enemy spots a tank, they'll know about it and just use anti-tank measures (those exist btw) to take care of it

    • @WarmPillow-hs6kj
      @WarmPillow-hs6kj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@nahbro104 You don’t know what you are talking about, the German designers took account to the crews well being. So for example if a T34 was burning or shot the crew would have a less likely chance of surviving because the limited space would be extremely hard for them to get out in case of a fire or treating their wounds but also the shrapnel would reign more freely and their ammo would be more likely to hit. Otherwise the higher profiles and heavily armored Panther and Tiger, with also an honorable mention the American Sherman had all the same reason to be this tall, crew safety, firing speed.

    Fascinating. I visited the tank museum in Münster a few years back - my first time seeing world war II tanks up close and personal. The Panzer III, Panzer IV, Sherman and T-34 were all about the size I had expected them to be. The Panther and the King Tiger on the other hand… You know they’re gonna be big but standing next to them is really something else. Just enormous machines. The KV-1 is another surprisingly large tank. Have not seen one in the flesh but just seeing David Fletcher look like a hobbit next to one on Tank Chat #62 boggles the mind.

    • @claudyfocan731
      @claudyfocan731 2 ปีที่แล้ว +116

      It was relatively good in weight tho. At around 45tons.
      The transmissions in these were fucked due to the designers having had a 30ton tank in mind. Due to design changes it went all the way up to 45tons 🥴 its common in German engineering and machinery (same with U-boats back then) to have a safety factor of 1.6. So it would run those 45tons, just not for very long.
      Coupled with the time constraints it all had to go faster, quicker and dirtier. Some of the issues with these tanks were well known by the designers but they just didn’t have a choice 🤷🏼‍♂️ as using such large roadwheels was due to only poor quality rubber being available. So making smaller ones wouldn’t work out for them.
      Not even mentioning ball bearings, as the factories got bombed non stop. Making for a lack of bearings and thus the well known issues with some DB6xx aircraft engines.
      Overall it was a good and very capable tank, an opponent to be feared very much by enemy crews. But it was plagued by mechanical issues some of which were unavoidable 🤷🏼‍♂️

      @@Namtov Electric was not first choice. Electric was not reliable back then or strong at all, it was only when it was too dangerous to actually go outside to hand start. Hand starts were as a whole overall preferred as they were reliable at that point. If the tank stalled in a fight, the engine would be more than hot enough for the electric to give it a kick to restart it. If that failed, they had to get out or just sit there as most of the actual fighting systems in german tanks had manual backups, assuming they even had electric systems in them in the first place

      Then again the argument could be made that the same breakdowns would be more likely to be destroyed by the crew or scare passing enemies. Then the working ones may be caught with the crew abandoning them or surrendering without damage. A surprising amount of Tigers and Panthers were abandoned from smoke shells covering them. Not just White Phosphorus but normal smoke too (probably heard it could be white phosphorus) I was told it was a huge/scary fire hazard
