  • Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon skate better than anyone in the world. Neither of them follow traditional power skating methods or what is being taught by skill coaches around the world today. We'll explore what's similar about their mechanics, what's different, and what accounts for their performance distinctions.
Right off the bat, we'll notice two different starting styles - MacKinnon using an open hip start and McDavid opting for a crossover start, which studies suggest might be quicker. The next few strides are almost equal, with McDavid slightly pulling ahead, mainly due to the starting style. However, when it comes to turns, McDavid gains a significant advantage.
Breaking down MacKinnon's start, pay attention to how he orients his blade to the ice for a direct push back, emphasizing blade orientation for maximum grip. Also, note the valgus knee alignment, allowing the blade to grip the ice effectively.
In McDavid's crossover start, he gains an early advantage, and the key difference lies in his hip twist, creating a burst of speed. The tipped hip and hip twist allow McDavid to rotate his hips forward efficiently, contributing to his explosive stride.
Moving into the turns, McDavid showcases a more efficient footwork pattern, transitioning seamlessly from straight-ahead strides into crossovers. This is where the separation between the two becomes more evident.
While MacKinnon excels at orienting his blades for a powerful push, McDavid's cleaner technique and efficient footwork give him the edge in turns. Despite McDavid's advantage, MacKinnon's powerful leg strength is noteworthy.
We also briefly analyze McDavid's fastest skater competition, emphasizing his quick transitions from straight-ahead strides to crossovers. McDavid's ability to maintain stability with his feet close together and a well-oriented center of mass during turns sets him apart.

The only actual working hockey training program in the world. With an incredible Kinesiologist who’s intentions are to improve players and not to just make money.

How McDavid starts is huge. My hockey coaches as a kid had us all start off from the goal line the same way during skating drills. All skating drills out of corners as well.
I thank my early coaches for teaching me how to skate. It's something people have always complimented me on. My hands not until recently as of late. Takes 20+ years, I guess 😅. I'm a playmaker anyway. Let's go, Oilers!

Love your work, man. I feel like you are one of the most important coaches around at the moment for the insights you've already put out into the hockey world and passed onto other coaches.
Can't imagine my sessions on the ice without those little helpful quotes and lessons you've passed on in your videos.
can't wait to watch this one.

Thank you for the info🙏 could you do a break down of Larkin’s record lap? I’m curious what techniques and mechanics he used!
