Baldassare Forestiere immigrated to Fresno, California from Sicily in 1901 with a dream. Unfortunately, he didn't become the citrus farmer like he had wished, but he did create what's now a popular historic landmark, Forestiere Underground Gardens.

I was born and raised in Fresno and visited Forestiere’s Underground Gardens for the first time in 1960 when I was 9 y/o…and was stunned into silence with amazement. With a slackened mouth agog, staring at all the awesomeness. Later in life, I took my Girl Scout Troop back to my childhood stomping ground in 1993 to share with the girls a little bit of my life in Fresno. To my delight, my girls were full of amazement. But then, how could they not?
