No affectation - just pure brilliance.

Milstein was one of the few violinists that Heifetz encouraged his students to listen to.

Nathan Milstein was my hero violinist during my studies in the 1970s. He remains THE ONE for me!

What i like about milstein's playing is his directness... no wishy-washiness, just straight to the point

The clean articulation is just unbelievable and effortless, but it's always just to further the music. I love all the greats but he has become my favorite along with Szeryng.

the dryness of the recording really brings out how accurate the playing is :D

Maestro Millstein’s conditioning is absolutely mind-boggling. He is one with the filing and almost statuesque in composure. It is just an amazing constitutional image that is at once uplifting and inspiring. He looks as if he’s incapable of exhaustion.

Always get carried away watching Nathan Milstein playing! Impeccable! What a talent! Mendessohn - Violin Concerto couldn’t be any more perfect.

I love the old school accelerando deployed at the end of concertos by artists of this particular era. Milstein nails it here and Starker was another artist that employed them.

The first ever Long Playing Record in 33rpm format was this, but this started out on 78rpm records. The 33rpm records introduced in 1948. Actually the first recording in 33rpm format was "Columbia Masterworks Records" of the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. This video is really awesome.

+Pitborn See my comments on the Tchaikovsky piece. I have a dvd of these 2 recordings and I believe that they did various videotaping sessions, the better of them he plays much better because I see differences in both where I can hear minor differences from these and my dvd. Plus camera angles are different: My dvd has him always him prominently front and center, in close proximity whereas these, they shoot from the ceiling, further away, more of the orchestra, side shots, far in front of orchestra, extraneous sounds, like someone in the orchestra dropped something, etc. My dvd has none of this. Very old videotaping; 1951 - Chicago Symphony. The dvd got 5 stars on amazon, despite the technology of videotaping at the time. Television was only broadcasting a few hours a day then.

For that he does pretty well I would say. I think part of it not sounding so enjoyable is the studio accoustics and lighting, which must be very bad for the old instrument and the gut strings. Still I know what you mean. Some smaller mess ups unusual for Milstein. But considering its played in a dead accoustic it''s prety remarkable. Also I enjoy the ability to hear every noise he makes, many sounds get lost in a hall.

I mean this studio has no reverb whatsoever. It's so miserable. Still Milstein manages NOT to sound like a student.
