    Recently, one of my students told me that whenever she found an interesting article online in Russian, she would always add it to her LingQ app.
    She told me it greatly helped her improve her reading comprehension and she was now using it as her main spaced repetition vocabulary app.
    My curiosity peaked, and I decided to sign up for LingQ…

    I feel like the people who review LingQ on TH-cam don't really use it. They're just making these videos because their channel's content is about learning a new language and it feel likes these preview videos are just paid-advertisements.
    But I should say that your video is a bit better than the others. Because there are some channels out there that dudes don't even know how to use its some very basic features.

    • @LearntheRussianLanguage
      @LearntheRussianLanguage  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're right. At this stage it's not really worth it for me anymore, because I can already read basically any text in Russian. I tried to take a look at it from the perspective of a new learner - but I've also spoken a lot with one of my students who uses LingQ often.

    I really enjoy using LingQ for both Russian and Japanese. It's a great tool to progressively learn words in context of stories/books. I mainly use the reader as the spaced repetition part of the program is so-so. But unknown words from LingQ can be exported to Anki format which is nice :)

    • @LearntheRussianLanguage
      @LearntheRussianLanguage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I also prefer Anki. But for people that like to have multiple things in one app/tool, it's a solution.

    • @jamesm.9285
      @jamesm.9285 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's neat! How many cards would you practice on Anki each day with this method? :)

    Wow, love the russiangram page, helps me so much! Tried lingq already. Thought I can put russian yt videos in there and watch them while reading the automatically highlighted text. Unfortunately that wasn't possible the way I expected it to be.

    • @LearntheRussianLanguage
      @LearntheRussianLanguage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it only works well for YT videos that have the correct translation added by the owner. Or we'll have to wait before automaticaly generated subtitles become 99% correct.

    Hello Ari, I had a question about your Russian learning. Of course for me the usual cases have been hard. I have found one of my biggest struggles however to be the verbs in Russian. It seems so many verbs conjugate irregularly. I am still kind of on beginner verbs so I don't know if they get more regular or not later on. But how did you deal with irregular verb conjugations when you studied?

    • @LearntheRussianLanguage
      @LearntheRussianLanguage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Russian has some irregular verbs, but most of themare only found in the beginning. So it gets easier. What helped a lot for me was hearing them often correctly while watching Russian series/movies. After a while you develop an intuition for what's right.

    I am kind of curious about the Russian Reader's App. I might get myself, a tablet anyway because I am starting to notice at my school paper books are being phased out slowly and replaced with e-books.

    My situation is a little funny. I am a Ukrainian born in America. Both of my parents are immigrants from Ukraine, though my dad speaks Russian. My mom along with all most of my relatives speak Ukrainian. I knew spoke either Ukrainian and Russian as a child, until i started using English mostly and then I eventually forgot how to speak. I decided to teach myself to speak again and I assumed that I should relearn Ukrainian because it was the language I thought I was more familiar with and likely spoke as a child. I realised I was wrong after I was trying to relearn Ukrainian because a lot of words were really unfamiliar to me. Then I learned that I was much more familiar with the Russian language and that I probably spoke it as a kid (which doesn’t make much sense) so now I’m trying to get myself to relearn it. My question is, if I understand Russian and can read it, how long would it take me to be able to speak as opposed to an absolute beginner? And how do I teach myself to regain the ability to speak? I also have a fairly limited vocabulary, but that’s not a concern for me right now

    • @LearntheRussianLanguage
      @LearntheRussianLanguage  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting situation! If you've already spoken it, it should go MUCH faster. I can't give you a specific timeline as it depends on motivation, practice, and how well you spoke before. For speaking, I recommend either real-life practice. If that's not possible, try online tutors, or practice speaking with yourself - similar to what I'm doing in my Russian-language videos.

    What is the idea of lingQ? I have free reading program in my browser and it can do the same thing in any site. Don't need every time to copy in Google translate.

    • @LearntheRussianLanguage
      @LearntheRussianLanguage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So the idea is that you use texts you're using yourself to create a personal flashcard deck. In theory, most apps can be DIYed, but then it's not going to be as smooth as if you'd use an app for it.

    LinQ is great, BUT, their mobile version has been cut over the past year, or so (no more translations; no more being able to listen to an entire course [while exercising, for example]). The PC version is still relatively versatile, even without a membership.

    • @LearntheRussianLanguage
      @LearntheRussianLanguage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't know that, as I only tried it recently. Strange that they've been cutting functions.

      @@LearntheRussianLanguage I've been using LinQ since last June/July, I found it overwhelming with me eventually reaching a plateau and becoming despondent. I recently discovered Busuu (through one of your videos/newsletters, I think) and find it very helpful and affordable, I may even sign up for an annual membership. I've also started learning and practicing Russian cursive, yes, it's not necessary, but, (1) I want to regain my writing skills (these days even signing my name has become difficult due to all writing taking place on the keyboard), (2) one finds many Russian movies using Russian cursive in the credits and (3) it's actually quite therapeutic.

    Many thanks for your feedback on Russian with Lingq. The app with all respect is boring and frustrating. The words sounds robotic and weired as you mentioned! There are no speaking or writing exercises (except a casual mini fill in the gaps ones which is useless to me). I used it twice in the past for a short period and it was a let down. I like casual learning apps and watching movies and YT videos, plus ofcourse traveling to a Russian speaking country. This what really helped me being able to communicate and improve my language skills.

    • @LearntheRussianLanguage
      @LearntheRussianLanguage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think LingQ is one of those apps that should be used as a supplemental role if someone specifically struggles with reading or vocabulary. Just on its own isn't enough to learn to speak well.

  • @K.Marx48
    @K.Marx48 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you also make good use of the audio side of lingQ as well? Your supposed to use them together to gain listening and reading capabilities. The audio side has really helped my speaking abilities.
