    How cool to catch the hatch in progress at the nest exchange! Clearly can see the hatching happening. Beautiful sight... !

    How can you tell the difference between male & female?!

      The loons in our first webcam are both banded, so that's how we can tell them apart. Otherwise, they are indentical so it's nearly impossible. The males tend to be a little larger, but that said, some females are large too! The male is the only one to yodel, so if you see the loon making that sound, you know it's the male.

    how long do the baby loons live with the parents?

      Hi! The adults stay on the lakes until October or November and then they head to the ocean for the winter. The chicks (juveniles) stay on the lakes often until right before ice-in and then they head to the ocean too. They won't return to freshwater lakes until they are about 3 years old. They do try to return as close to their natal lake as possible, but it depends if there's an open territory.
