Love the honesty about developing on the console being a pain, hah. I've heard of this being done a few times but good to see a nice video guide has been made for it!
A good idea for a future video is about HEX-editing the default.xbe - to make 4:3 games into native 16:9 widescreen. It's really easy and so worth it!!!
who knows... all I know is, that these codes also work if you have a game that has a 480p fixed xbe-file. Like Darkwatch - you can play now in 480p (instead of 480i) and in widescreen! I just hope somebody give a little love to Football :-( and make a hex code for "Pro Evolution Soccer 4" !!

I wish I had enough talent to make Xbox homebrew :( your amazing and I am sure I have played some of your emulators at some point :) So much fun and enrichment to my life, and now your video's entertain me to no end! Thank you!!! :)
I appreciate the old PC-98 FM synth Touhou music usage. So criminally underrated compared to the newer songs, which are still masterpieces themselves don't get me wrong. Great video btw, I was always interested to see how technical the original Xbox was for it's time back in the day.
I remember having some of this stuff installed on my PC back then. I mostly used it just so I could take screen shots or capture some video of gameplay. It was a handy to have. I have a Xecuter 3 ModChip installed on my XBOX which I still own. So it was really easy to toggle debug mode on/off in the X3 Bios.
Your videos have inspired me to dig out my trusty old 1.6 Xbox and softmod it. I took it apart a few days ago to clean everything. Thankfully I don't have to worry about the clock cap. I'm going to use the Splinter Cell method since I can't do a TSOP flash with my board. Sadly my DVD drive wouldn't read discs anymore. I was kinda bummed since it was a Hitachi drive and those are supposed to be more reliable. Thankfully though a friend of mine was getting rid of 3 Xboxes plus a bunch of accessories, so I swapped a Philips DVD drive into my Xbox, and everything is back up and running again. I forgot how much I missed this console.
Awesome bro, I remember used the same method back on 2005 with my retail XBOX using mIRC chat software to get all programs I needed, it was awesome to press the Play button on the Visual Studio and see the result directly on TV :D Thanks a lot dude

Great video! Out of the 1000+ Xboxs I modded I had 1 debug kit conversion request for a game reviewer that wanted to take frame buffer screenshots. I recall starting a game and watching the code fly by live in visual studio
Nice touch, using the Touhou 4 - Lotus Land Story main menu theme. Always happy when I see or hear Touhou at something completely unrelated. Also: #metoo

Did you do it, I always wanted to mod our Xbox & just never did & then everything moved on. Finally got some junkers off ebay last summer & fumbled my way through softmodding before finally trying the modchips, kept seeing people saying how softmodding is the easier option, but I have no fking idea what the fk they were talking about, the softmod fucked up twice the first 2 attempts, random parts of it's process just not executing. Went ahead & soldered the necesary points to flash the BIOS, 5 minutes later, fully modded xbox, first attempt, running UnleashX, been wanting to do the RAM upgrade as I like it as an emulation station, but I really need more micro soldering experience before I'm going to chance that.

People like you have inspired people like me to always learn more, diversify and master that diversity, and give the gift of giving itself. Thank you for your contributions! I recall one of the popular dashboards had a creepy picture of a black-eyed kid. Have you seen it? If so, where can I find that again?? I'm going to build the debug box. I still have my XBOX stash and now I have a hot air rework station, so adding the RAM will be a snap. Time to dig out the ol' Xecuter 3 mod chip and my special version of Mech Assault. It's time to play with this hobby again. BTW - I didn't know that a hard drive could be locked at the firmware level until I got into this stuff. What a really neat thing to know and add to the concept of digital privacy.
This was really interesting to watch. I knew about this and I remember when I modded my Xbox I was about to purchase two memory chips. Eventually I skipped this as I had virtually zero experience on soldering and didn't want to ruin my machine. I assume soldering those chips would make 100% "original" dev kit? I mean that would have to be easiest dev kit conversion ever? Afaik every other platform have generally speaking very exotic hardware. I'm not programmer but always been fascinated about it. Good job Microsoft Studios 2003 guess I'm going to have to download that and get virtual Windows XP. Everything you mentioned sounds pretty good except for the part of it only having half the ram of the original debug. Nice job on the video keep up the good work
@Modern Vintage Gamer Thank you so much for this video, I tried to do this with mine but ended up with no video on boot, tried it again and I have done it! It's doing me wonders in allowing me to continue to debug some dashboard xexes modified to start off the original xbox live rebuild. If you're interested please PM me, Your knowledge is key!
I think you have a Focus video chip, i rectified this by using something from xbins called "debug-1.4-Gueux-NeT.rar" (I've written the file name because i'm not sure if linking to xbins is allowed. There is an NFO file in the RAR with instructions. Worked for me with v1.4 xbox, aladdin advance modchip and X2 4981.06 bios. Hope it works for you too :)
Question, is it possible to add additional 64mb of RAM to a retail xbox? 128mb of RAM, if even usable for games, would be a huge advantage for frametimes and framerate in some cases. Games like Half-Life 2 struggle to maintain even 20 FPS in some scenes and RAM is probably a huge factor in this.
On that note, the CPU is also upgradeable. It can be upgraded from the stock 733 CPU to 1GHZ or 1.4GHZ. Games weren't designed with faster CPU's in mind, so some are buggy or play too fast (in some cases that can be remedied by patching the game to lock it to 733mhz). You are brilliant. For sure. I’m good with computers/mechanics but you simply put me to shame. Keep up the good work! I Always look forward to your content
This is awesome. Makes me wonder if anyone who has either an actual Xbox dev debug system or has this method setup can create actual Original Xbox games instead of homebrew just like people are doing for the Dreamcast? That would be cool.
Well it seems like its relatively easy to develop for the xbox, I think that some windows games could be ported with small changes. I feel kind of tempted to make some homebrew, to bad I have not too much free time.
I actually still have my legit copy of Visual Studio 2003 Enterprise from when I worked on this "new thing" called C#... wonder if the XDK was ever included in MSDN...
To anyone getting a blank screen after launching default.xbe, I'm not sure if this is your issue or not, but v1.4 Xbox have the focus encoder, I got a debug bios to boot on a v1.4 Xbox using this RAR file from xbins: "debug-1.4-Gueux-NeT.rar" which has Focus chip support. Follow MVGs tutorial up until after you've finished copying the contents of C and E debug files to your xbox and then follow the instructions in the NFO file. Good luck!
you think its the Focus chip ? i am getting "Patching kernel param string Calculating 2bl entry point Calling 2bl: * EntryPoint2BL 80400332 * PhysicalRomPos 02f01000" error in the debug log. and yes just a black screen. I will have to give yours a shot!
Initially i thought it was focus chip because MVGs method worked on my v1.1 xbox and not my v1.4. I think i was wrong, my theory now is that its related to the change in the RC4 key from v1.1 to v1.3 and beyond..... Anyway, the method i described worked for me on my aladdin chipped v1.4 with the last stable ind-bios.
@@RobVK8FOES I think my issue may have to do with the RC4 keys. Everyone saying google it to get the keys. all the links from google are more people saying google it its so easy to google.
I love your videos. I don't always know what you are talking about. I'm more of a hardware man than software. Need a mod chip installed or cool lighting, I can do that. Need the tx chip replaced, no problem. Soft modding, writing code, its like beating my head with a brick. I've modded a bunch of Xboxes over the years and I apparently used a lot of emulators you made. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the original Xbox. One night at a Halo CE LAN at my house we played on four Halo Edition Xboxes that I had modded. Yes, it was cool. I miss those days, back when I was 49, ten years ago. ;)
I feel like the Xbox was very underrated. It’s the best way to play 6th generation games and you don’t need to have memory cards or ever worry about storage space like with modern games as all the games run of the disc.
ArcaneTuber Indeed. I’m not sure why games this generation come on discs but they don’t play directly on them anymore. Maybe it’s a technical reason but it destroys hard drive space.
@Edmundo studios: Probably because as they are more like a PC now, function more like a PC and require complete installation, also the game data, textures, audio, etc. are now so big that streaming directly from disc would not be as smooth as from HDD. I prefer a middle ground though: install just the important parts from the disc, like it was in PS3 (also the original Xbox used a non permanent installation to create a cache and stream data quicker from the HDD).
I think you have a Focus video chip, i rectified this by using something from xbins called "debug-1.4-Gueux-NeT.rar" (I've written the file name because i'm not sure if linking to xbins is allowed. Really interesting! please go on with x360 and PS3 .. as i'm mainly using emulators for homebrew dev, would be also nice to turn them as debug development emulated devices!
Me too! Did you ever manage to fix it? Having done some research it appears it's the version of the BIOS I've been using that doesn't support my video chip. AFAIK the 'Complex' one shown in the video only supports Conexant video chips which were used in the older versions of the original XBOX's whereas later ones used the 'Focus' video chip. I'm still trying to find a version of the BIOS that supports the Focus video chip machines.
I was a prominent member of the ASSEMbler forum years back and helped with a few projects. One thing I was told but never checked myself was that beyond the 64 vs 128 MB RAM difference between retail and other consoles like debug, dev, and Chihiro there was one other difference all 128 MB boards had. The system security. I was told retail had an extra security bit the 128 MB boards did not have thus meaning the debug BIOS could not be direct loaded on retail due to lack of code for the security bit. Either the Phoenix BIOS Loader gets around this or that bit is not true. Someone here with more experience in OG Xbox coding care to set me straight on this? Just curious. I had a debug console for some time but never compared the BIOS files.
As I was following this guide I noticed a mistake. You mention Visual Studio 2003 but the version of the SDK that you are using in this video is older and not compatible. In fact it looks like you’re showing the original Visual Studio .NET (2002 not 2003) in the video while you say it. So for anyone watching that wants to use the version in this video, make sure to install the original VS.NET or even maybe VS6. However, I found that the latest XDK floating around online, version 5933, installs fine on VS.NET 2003. However it doesn’t work if you install SP1, so make sure to use the original VS.NET 2003 only. I haven’t gotten to try it out yet, so I’m not sure if the newer XDKs are compatible with the older DEBUG BIOS versions (there’s also a newer BFM version available on xbins, version 5558) so I’m not sure it’ll work but a lot of people seem to be using this XDK version so presumably it works. I’ll report back when I get my Xbox all setup. Hope this info helps, so you don’t have to find out by trial and error like I did :)
For those who have a black screen after booting the bios, it could well be that you did not install the xdk files to the real c partition but rather to its copy (shadow_c). I had this issue, and it took me two nights to figure out that I was led to believe I was copying the files to the right place, but in reality I wasn't.
I just stumbled apon your videos and i really appreciate your help iv been wanting a dev kit for a bit now and just cant afford one and i dont own a pc to hack my consoles but im down to learn and have questions if you could answer them for me
I just soft modded my xbox and I installed vs.net + the xdk. Just too bad it turned out to be a v1.6 model so no pads to solder the additional memory chips on to.
There is a huge difference between retail and debug...mcpx versions, 3 vs 2 respectfully. This is why chihiro can't be done via retail. Yes you can run some games but not using original hardware sadly, only the games. Still love your channel and this video.
you mentioned "Turning off your xbox will revert you to a retail system" I'm assuming this means reverting back to the UnleashX/Softmod dash, correct? If yes, any way to have the system autoboot to the debug dash?
Debug kit is the target hardware with some adaptations for running unsigned code. Development Kits are much more powerful and may run custom hardware and software. For Xbox was easy; it was a PC in disguise but for a Nintendo 64 you need a Silicon Graphics Workstation tailored for the task
Since the retail and debug motherboard are the exact same, would it possible to solder or install the 2 extra 32MB RAM chips? Do you need to find a specific RAM chip for that or no?
One thing I've always been curious about, since the whole bleem thing. Are there still people who still use actual code from hardware anymore or is it just something that no one would dare to do any more? :)
Would this be classed as "Alpha Development hardware"? I really want to play "The Simpsons Road Rage" E3 2001 Xbox Alpha Build. As far this can only be played on the the original Alpha Development hardware, but really expensive
Other consoles can be converted to Debug/Development from retail such as the Xbox 360 and PS3. Interested in seeing more?

If only you uploaded this 2 weeks earlier. I botched soldering to try and flash my tsop and haven't had the heart to test my console
Looking forward to you making a simular video, converting xbox 360 into a devkit using "Fusion". 😘
Great content on your channel, thanks a lot!
Great video, very informative
love it! thanks for the help :)
A M A Z I N G content as always. I was indeed in need of an MVG fix. But this surpassed all expectations as always: Pretty neat job!
I actually still have my legit copy of Visual Studio 2003 Enterprise from when I worked on this "new thing" called C#... wonder if the XDK was ever included in MSDN...
if it does could you share the iso with me i can't find a version with it anywhere
Good luck!
hey yo! didn't work when i opened it via apps. Just keep getting my modded dash loading screen
you think its the Focus chip ? i am getting
"Patching kernel param string
Calculating 2bl entry point
Calling 2bl:
* EntryPoint2BL 80400332
* PhysicalRomPos 02f01000"
error in the debug log. and yes just a black screen.
@@RobVK8FOES Or maybe I need to comment out. or 0 out my EEPROM key ?
Thank you very much for this.
Yeah, you lost me. 😅
I guess this is not for me. Great video, though, like always. 👍
And as the Xbox used the x86 architecture and was like a PC, making games for it was the easiest of the 3 (GC, PS2, XB).
I keep getting a black screen every time I try to launch the debug dash.
@@RobVK8FOES Thanks, this solved my problem with getting a black screen.
Can you please make a video on how to upgrade the ram from 64mbit to 128mbit? 😊
underrated channel
Really interesting! please go on with x360 and PS3 .. as i'm mainly using emulators for homebrew dev, would be also nice to turn them as debug development emulated devices!
folowed what you said in the video but getting a blank screen after pbl loads
Any suggestions @Modern Vintage Gamer ?
Great Video!!!!
Hope this info helps, so you don’t have to find out by trial and error like I did :)
omg thanks no one anymore has info abut this stuff thank you I've been trying to do this for over a week 😁
Im curious. How did people get access to actual debug kits back in the day?
Good video!
For those who have a black screen after booting the bios, it could well be that you did not install the xdk files to the real c partition but rather to its copy (shadow_c). I had this issue, and it took me two nights to figure out that I was led to believe I was copying the files to the right place, but in reality I wasn't.
Any recommendation on how to get access to the shadow_c partition?
Hi, could you please do the same for Xbox 360?
hmmmm i still have an OG chipped xbox (with the dip switches on the front).
i might look into this.
MVG - what's the model of that DELL monitor you use in this video. Is that the 19"?
There is a huge difference between retail and debug...mcpx versions, 3 vs 2 respectfully. This is why chihiro can't be done via retail. Yes you can run some games but not using original hardware sadly, only the games. Still love your channel and this video.
you mentioned "Turning off your xbox will revert you to a retail system"
I'm assuming this means reverting back to the UnleashX/Softmod dash, correct? If yes, any way to have the system autoboot to the debug dash?
how did you obtain Original XBOX Debug Kit and Xbox 360 Debug Kit
BTW: what is the diference between Debug and Development Kit?
Debug kit is the target hardware with some adaptations for running unsigned code.
Development Kits are much more powerful and may run custom hardware and software. For Xbox was easy; it was a PC in disguise but for a Nintendo 64 you need a Silicon Graphics Workstation tailored for the task
I do wonder how I might be able to dump the bootrom, that's something I'd like to look at.
Well this is somewhat inspiring. But what can I develop for the Xbox that hasn't already been done and would be useful?
Since the retail and debug motherboard are the exact same, would it possible to solder or install the 2 extra 32MB RAM chips? Do you need to find a specific RAM chip for that or no?
You need a compatible set of RAM chips, but, yes, you could add the 'missing' 64MB of RAM if you were savvy enough.
i am wondering, are there any game engines available for making games for the xbox?
maybe the old unreal engine 2? ^^
renderware engine
@@abasgames Is there a specific version I'd need?
Is there a way to get the Xbox menus font and use it in Windows? I've never found this font on the web, only that spider Man ugly one...
One thing I've always been curious about, since the whole bleem thing. Are there still people who still use actual code from hardware anymore or is it just something that no one would dare to do any more? :)
1:40 so that's why my xbox always reset when I got angry at the Godfather game
Would this be classed as "Alpha Development hardware"? I really want to play "The Simpsons Road Rage" E3 2001 Xbox Alpha Build. As far this can only be played on the the original Alpha Development hardware, but really expensive
Great video however can you turn the x box back into a retail one?
I hear touhou music.
