I was very lucky to have amazing American history and civics teachers here in South Louisiana. And to mention ones that weren't afraid to inform us of things that weren't in the books.

When I was younger, in my history classes. I had heard that John Paul Jones captured a British vessel. I just took it as that and did not look into it any farther. I just figured that he captured a ship off the coast. I didn't know he did something so kick ass, as take his little converted merchant vessel, sail it right to the British Isles and raid towns and everything.

A big reason as to why the Iron Clads couldn't deal significant damage, was because both at the time were only carrying explosive shells. While they were good to shoot into wooden hulls, which would then explode inside, they weren't made for heavy armor penetration and would explode on impact, spraying shrapnel everywhere. They needed solid shot made for penetration power in order to actually be able to smash through the armor. I'd recommend reading "The Duel Between the First Ironclads" by William C. Davis.

It would make sense for the monitors solid shot to be round balls because they were smoothbore guns, but from my knowledge, they mostly used explosive shells.

Note: the USS Construction, Old Iron sides, Is the oldest ship in the US Navy. It is still a commissioned ship, and yes they do have a true navy crew. It is stationed in Boston Mass. It is over 200 years old.

What made America great was the creativity and innovation of the American people whose origins were immigrants from many countries of the World. USA represents many ethnicities and races.
Artur, the US was neutral as long as possible in the world wars because we had large portions of our population who had family that had come from or lived in each country that was participating in the war on both sides. Joining one side would’ve potentially caused riots and destruction if they weren’t forced to join.

I think a ground fight is out of the question for any hostile country. There are more guns in citizens' hands than there are citizens, and that will only become more true as an invasion draws nearer. Plus the citizens have a lot more to fight for than in a lot of countries. It would be a meat grinder.
@@guyincognito1406 The only real issue with that is not everyone has body armor like they do guns. I may be wrong on that though but the people I've seen around my state they'll own guns but not any actual protection.
And army and marines are on the coast not to mention all registered and non registered gun owners. Anyone and everyone can bring the fight when they feel lucky, won’t take them long to regret invading the u.s.
This is good for fighting other superpowers (that don't exist right now) but there are some pretty bad downsides to such militarization such as not enough money going to Healthcare and education resulting in things like the highest infant mortality rate out of any first world country and with so many guns the US has the highest gun death rate in the world

The land the US won through war was never the result of US aggression. Other land gains were simply purchases made between two consenting parties. Simply gaining land does not make a country imperialistic. What matters is how that land is gained and why. There was a treaty signed between New Granada (who controlled the territory where the Panama canal would be built) and the US, which granted the US transportation rights over the isthmus of Panama in exchange for the US suppressing riots and rebels in the area. Later, after the French failed to construct the canal in the area, Another treaty was signed with the newly liberated country of Panama. The treaty said that the US could purchase the land needed for the canal in exchange for protection against Columbia which was obviously keen on retaking Panama. The truth is that if the US was really imperialistic, Canada would not exist as a country. Neither would Mexico. And by now the entirety of South America would be part of the US as well, making taking any other country or countries very easy. The fact that the US does not completely rule the world right now is proof enough that the US was never interested in doing so.
I mean, we did kinda take Hawaii just cause the Queen of Hawaii was making it hard for American plantation owners to sell their pineapples. Manifest Destiny didn’t die out once we hit California you know? It only got a slight branding change after Woodrow Wilson made interventionism cool and bred a mentality of spreading democracy all over the world, just another way to look at it.

If any other government/country that existed in the 1770s had been able to obtain the same amount of power (ability to influence the rest of the world) as the US has, the world would be a completely different place. The truth is that "Manifest destiny" meant exactly what it means. Things just kept turning out in favor of the US. It seemed like it was the destiny of the US to expand from sea to sea because that is what kept happening. It wasn't some slogan created to hide an evil agenda, it was an expression of wonder and gratitude for what seemed like God's favor and good luck shining on a brand new country. As far as Hawaii goes, it was a FAR more nuanced series of events than what you are making it out to be. What you said sounds like the US government held a joint session of congress and came up with a plan to steal Hawaii while ringing their hands and laughing maniacally. The truth is that the US government had little to nothing to do with what happened to Hawaii until the very end of the process, and by then there was little choice left to them. At one point the US government even attempted to give Hawaii back to Queen Liliʻuokalani. It wasn't the government that occupied the Islands, it was a cabal of wealthy business men and lawyers who wanted to control the Islands. I'm not saying the US never did anything wrong or that it is always on the right side. But we don't need to pretend like everything the US ever did was bad or that things that were bad were worse than they really were. I prefer the truth to sensationalism.

It's called the USS Constitution. It travels around as basically a floating museum now. It was launched in 1797, and fought in the war of 1812
The USS Constitution is tied for first on my list of museum ships with the USS Texas. Both have a ton of history behind them. Yea the USS Constitution may have a bit more but I'm biased to the USS Texas. So glad that the Texas legislature finally got their act in gear to save her and get her to a better location.
My family doctor as a child was from Estonia. Wonderful man and so devoted to his patients. He loved America and Estonia both. I cried when I heard he passed on. He worked out of a dingy (mostly yellow and brown), dark office with used furniture and old wallpaper to keep the charges low. He had no nurse or secretary and used big files cards for his records. I smashed my thumb in a car door and he said the nail would have to be pulled off. I asked "isn't that going to bleed alot". He replied "that's why I have such a big sink over here". Just as I was laughing, he tore the nail off before I could worry. That proved to be the kindest way. I remember him telling my mother that the Nazis were very evil but they were mere lap dogs compared to the cruelty and savagery of the Soviets. I never forgot that remark.

@Da’mani The Goat I dont think so. The russian, germans, indians and Pakistanis are much more experienced and combat tested. USA has literally won nothing since ww2. The gulf war was won by tech not by boots on the ground. Even in ww2, the germans and Japanese always butchered them. Technology is the only thing they rely on and technology can only help so much. The us airforce and the us navy are best in the world though.

One stat that sounds crazy now, is in WW2 the US had over 100 aircraft carriers at one point. 24 'fleet' major ones, and 80 for smaller ones initially for escorting convoys and later in the war supported marine ground operations in battels on pacific islands.
One one ship from the US’ 6th Battle Squadron is still around today. The USS Texas is the last Dreadnought Era battleship in the world and participated in the internment of the German High Seas Fleet at the end of WW1. When the war ended and the German Fleet was interred at Scapa Flow, you had Battleships/Battlecruisers from the UK, US, German and France all in one place. An amazing sight for those interested in battleships
Another thing to remember, before the Civil War, the U.S. Marines aboard the navy ships were the riflemen in the crow's nest or among the boarding parties fighting to take the enemy ships. The Marine officers added the quatrefoil design on their hats so they would not be taken out by friendly fire. The actions against the Barbary pirates and the actions in Mexico are immortalized in the Marine Corps Hymn : "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli..."

Something else to add, while we did dominate the Spanish at sea in 1898, it was quite a bit harder on land. The US still used black powder based Springfield Trapdoor rifles compared to the Spanish smokeless powder mauser bolt actions. The main US Machine gun was still the gatling gun which was rolled into battle like an artillery piece.
Can you please do a reaction to the kirov battle cruisers, I think they're really cool and back in the day they scared the US enough to bring back the Iowa class battleships

Artur. They, those ships being spoken about, were known as "ships- of-the-line." Because, prevailing Naval doctrine was the opposing admirals would get their ships in "line-of-battle" thereby, being able to bring all their guns to bear. Known as a "broadside." Those were the "battleships" of the day, Artur.
We have fairly massive air forces, as well. The navy is the most practical means of moving things over water, but the air dominance would allow pretty quick movement, as well.
Might I recommend Artur watch one of the best history tv series, TURN. It does a great job on telling the story of the first US spies. If I am not mistaking, the first large scale spy ring ever.
fun fact: The USS Constitution, one of the frigates of 1797, is the oldest ship still afloat (HMS Victory is older, built in 1765, but is in drydock for extensive repair and restoration, and has been for a century. She was in terrible shape and had sank due to a leak, nearly sinking again a little while later) and by far the oldest active service military vessel. She mostly serves an educational and ceremonial role, and is kept in top condition with captains rotating out every 2 years. If you ever want to see a ship like that with completely period-correct fittings (she still has her cannons, which are used ceremonially), the USS Constitution is moored in Boston and allows tourists. I didn't go below deck when I visited in 2018, as I suck with stairs and the stairs are quite steep, as they usually are on ships, but simply being on deck is a history buff's wet dream.

The interesting thing about HMS Dreadnought was that it was laid down after the USS South Carolina, a ship of similar design and capacities, but finished before, being the first "Dreadnought".

I think a ground fight is out of the question for any hostile country. There are more guns in citizens' hands than there are citizens, and that will only become more true as an invasion draws nearer. Plus the citizens have a lot more to fight for than in a lot of countries. It would be a meat grinder.
When you’ve got around 10 states with half their populations worth of REGISTERED gun owners, I think that’s enough to match most land armies right?
@@guyincognito1406 The only real issue with that is not everyone has body armor like they do guns. I may be wrong on that though but the people I've seen around my state they'll own guns but not any actual protection.
And army and marines are on the coast not to mention all registered and non registered gun owners. Anyone and everyone can bring the fight when they feel lucky, won’t take them long to regret invading the u.s.
This is good for fighting other superpowers (that don't exist right now) but there are some pretty bad downsides to such militarization such as not enough money going to Healthcare and education resulting in things like the highest infant mortality rate out of any first world country and with so many guns the US has the highest gun death rate in the world

The factor was that the US was never imperialistic to begin with. The land the US won through war was never the result of US aggression. Other land gains were simply purchases made between two consenting parties. Simply gaining land does not make a country imperialistic. What matters is how that land is gained and why.
There was a treaty signed between New Granada (who controlled the territory where the Panama canal would be built) and the US, which granted the US transportation rights over the isthmus of Panama in exchange for the US suppressing riots and rebels in the area.
Later, after the French failed to construct the canal in the area, Another treaty was signed with the newly liberated country of Panama. The treaty said that the US could purchase the land needed for the canal in exchange for protection against Columbia which was obviously keen on retaking Panama.
The truth is that if the US was really imperialistic, Canada would not exist as a country. Neither would Mexico. And by now the entirety of South America would be part of the US as well, making taking any other country or countries very easy.
The fact that the US does not completely rule the world right now is proof enough that the US was never interested in doing so.
I mean, we did kinda take Hawaii just cause the Queen of Hawaii was making it hard for American plantation owners to sell their pineapples. Manifest Destiny didn’t die out once we hit California you know? It only got a slight branding change after Woodrow Wilson made interventionism cool and bred a mentality of spreading democracy all over the world, just another way to look at it.

Good points. If any other government/country that existed in the 1770s had been able to obtain the same amount of power (ability to influence the rest of the world) as the US has, the world would be a completely different place. Doesnt mean the US is perfect but I'm glad it didn't turn out another way. At least we have the ability and privilege to learn from past mistakes and try to improve moving forward

People like to use the term "Manifest destiny" as some sort of proof that the US was some evil imperialistic monster that lied, cheated, and murdered its way to power. The truth is that "Manifest destiny" meant exactly what it means. Things just kept turning out in favor of the US. It seemed like it was the destiny of the US to expand from sea to sea because that is what kept happening. It wasn't some slogan created to hide an evil agenda, it was an expression of wonder and gratitude for what seemed like God's favor and good luck shining on a brand new country.
As far as Hawaii goes, it was a FAR more nuanced series of events than what you are making it out to be. What you said sounds like the US government held a joint session of congress and came up with a plan to steal Hawaii while ringing their hands and laughing maniacally.
The truth is that the US government had little to nothing to do with what happened to Hawaii until the very end of the process, and by then there was little choice left to them. At one point the US government even attempted to give Hawaii back to Queen Liliʻuokalani. It wasn't the government that occupied the Islands, it was a cabal of wealthy business men and lawyers who wanted to control the Islands.
I'm not saying the US never did anything wrong or that it is always on the right side. But we don't need to pretend like everything the US ever did was bad or that things that were bad were worse than they really were.
I prefer the truth to sensationalism.

I've been aboard the USS Texas, it was a floating museum at the time. I believe they've dry docked it now though, very cool though.

It's called the USS Constitution. It travels around as basically a floating museum now. It was launched in 1797, and fought in the war of 1812
The USS Constitution is tied for first on my list of museum ships with the USS Texas. Both have a ton of history behind them. Yea the USS Constitution may have a bit more but I'm biased to the USS Texas. So glad that the Texas legislature finally got their act in gear to save her and get her to a better location.

My family doctor as a child was from Estonia. Wonderful man and so devoted to his patients. He loved America and Estonia both. I cried when I heard he passed on. He worked out of a dingy (mostly yellow and brown), dark office with used furniture and old wallpaper to keep the charges low. He had no nurse or secretary and used big files cards for his records. I smashed my thumb in a car door and he said the nail would have to be pulled off. I asked "isn't that going to bleed alot". He replied "that's why I have such a big sink over here". Just as I was laughing, he tore the nail off before I could worry. That proved to be the kindest way. I remember him telling my mother that the Nazis were very evil but they were mere lap dogs compared to the cruelty and savagery of the Soviets. I never forgot that remark.

@Da’mani The Goat I dont think so. The russian, germans, indians and Pakistanis are much more experienced and combat tested. USA has literally won nothing since ww2. The gulf war was won by tech not by boots on the ground. Even in ww2, the germans and Japanese always butchered them. Technology is the only thing they rely on and technology can only help so much. The us airforce and the us navy are best in the world though.

One stat that sounds crazy now, is in WW2 the US had over 100 aircraft carriers at one point. 24 'fleet' major ones, and 80 for smaller ones initially for escorting convoys and later in the war supported marine ground operations in battels on pacific islands.
One one ship from the US’ 6th Battle Squadron is still around today. The USS Texas is the last Dreadnought Era battleship in the world and participated in the internment of the German High Seas Fleet at the end of WW1. When the war ended and the German Fleet was interred at Scapa Flow, you had Battleships/Battlecruisers from the UK, US, German and France all in one place. An amazing sight for those interested in battleships

Another thing to remember, before the Civil War, the U.S. Marines aboard the navy ships were the riflemen in the crow's nest or among the boarding parties fighting to take the enemy ships. The Marine officers added the quatrefoil design on their hats so they would not be taken out by friendly fire. The actions against the Barbary pirates and the actions in Mexico are immortalized in the Marine Corps Hymn : "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli..."

Something else to add, while we did dominate the Spanish at sea in 1898, it was quite a bit harder on land. The US still used black powder based Springfield Trapdoor rifles compared to the Spanish smokeless powder mauser bolt actions. The main US Machine gun was still the gatling gun which was rolled into battle like an artillery piece.

Artur. They, those ships being spoken about, were known as "ships- of-the-line." Because, prevailing Naval doctrine was the opposing admirals would get their ships in "line-of-battle" thereby, being able to bring all their guns to bear. Known as a "broadside." Those were the "battleships" of the day, Artur.
We have fairly massive air forces, as well. The navy is the most practical means of moving things over water, but the air dominance would allow pretty quick movement, as well.

Might I recommend Artur watch one of the best history tv series, TURN. It does a great job on telling the story of the first US spies. If I am not mistaking, the first large scale spy ring ever.
fun fact: The USS Constitution, one of the frigates of 1797, is the oldest ship still afloat (HMS Victory is older, built in 1765, but is in drydock for extensive repair and restoration, and has been for a century. She was in terrible shape and had sank due to a leak, nearly sinking again a little while later) and by far the oldest active service military vessel. She mostly serves an educational and ceremonial role, and is kept in top condition with captains rotating out every 2 years. If you ever want to see a ship like that with completely period-correct fittings (she still has her cannons, which are used ceremonially), the USS Constitution is moored in Boston and allows tourists. I didn't go below deck when I visited in 2018, as I suck with stairs and the stairs are quite steep, as they usually are on ships, but simply being on deck is a history buff's wet dream.
