Brilliant performance, something not even approached today. Tebaldi ravished this role with scrupulous musical style and unparalleled beauty. She is the greatest Tosca who ever lived IMO.

Tebaldi's Tosca is one of opera´ s greatest creations. The phrasing, the style, the voice and her character were all perfectly suited for this role. Though I prefer some of her earlier performances in this role, she's still stunning in late 1959. Di Stefano and Gobbi also owned these roles in their careers. This evening was the return of Tebaldi at La Scala and it's a performance full of energy by all.

I was at the performance with my parents on a holiday trip in Italy, and also saw just prior to this Tosca, Del Monaco singing Otello there, as for Tebaldi, the Italians in the house gave her a huge ovation at the end of the opera, that I will never forget, I was then 19 years old, but today at 80 I still remember it like it was yesterday! GDS still had some beautiful warm golden tones left at that time.

@@user-py1jg6bb2r Thank you for your kindness! You know when I sat there at the time as a teenager I didn't really understand how important hearing GDS would be later, and never thought in that in 2021 I'd hear that performance, I was at with my mother and father, who are gone now of course, it brings back the memory of that night. I'd already seen both Bjoerling in opera with Anna Moffo, and Jan Peerce in concert the year before, so this was another great tenor to see and the word then was he was the "most beautiful Lyric tenor of the day" whether true for everyone I don't know, but he was passionate, beautiful vocally, warm and very Italian! Of course I saw him after that also and last in concert back in 1974, with the great Callas, that was the last time, but in the mid 1970's Mrs. Sara Tucker invited me when I was in NYC. to see a private showing of one of Richard Tucker 's last Pagliacci's, that was filmed complete at the Met. it was was only about six weeks before he suddenly died and so we saw it at a private studio, she also invited her son Henry and Pippo! GDS was seated right next to me, and I wanted to ask him some questions about his career etc. but because I was Mrs Tucker's guest, I didn't say much, out of the usual "I'm glad to meet you, etc. and shake his hand, any how it was just Mrs. Sara Tucker, son Henry Tucker ( Henry a close friend of mine) and myself in that room, we saw that 1974 entire filmed Met. Pagliacci RT sang, sadly now only the Vesti La Giubba is on the you tube video, that due to some legal reasons sadly, so not one complete video of Tucker in an opera performance is available, only the (concert version) of the then live TV Aida in 1949, with Tucker, Valdengo, Nelli and others singing in a formal concert setting, which is different then opera, no interpolated notes of course and no showy acting or waving hands etc. after all it's a formal concert setting and Toscanini wanted a perfect performance, he did coach Tucker to sing it the way he wanted it done, that was a condition when Tucker (he was only singing opera's in the house at that time for 4 years, making his debut in 1945) accepted it RT wanted some Toscanini coaching. Tucker had done some operatic singing in Chicago, for WGN radio, starting in 1944, a year before his Met. opera debut in 1945, that was on the "Chicago theater of the air" live short versions to fit the time slot and always in English. (Tucker also had sung two performances of "Traviata" in 1941 for "the Salmaggie opera Company") the first was in Manhattan at the "Jolson theater" and the second at the Brooklyn Academy of Music about a week later, so his first opera sung ever was Traviata. Tucker said (when Toscanini could not get either his favorite tenor, Peerce or Bjorling) to sing the Aida for the TV Brdcst. "I'll do it but only on condition you coach me for it" and Toscanini did give him some coaching instructions on how he wanted it done, so did Tuckers own coach, Joe Garnett. Jussi Bjoerling had sung the role already in Europe, so singing it in the 8H studio for the video would have been easy for him, but he said "no" and so did Jan Peerce, (who never ever sang it) and once told me, "it's not for me" he never did sing it, so Tucker the new kid on the block took the gamble, sang it and was a success even if he wasn't about to sing it on the Met. stage until 1965 at age 51 and that was with Soprano Nilsson, he was a success in that 1949 concert Aida and it really gave his career a shot in the arm so to speak, thanks to both Jussi Bjoerling and Jan Peerce turning Toscanini down. 35 year old Tucker already had a powerful Lyric Spinto and was totally reliable every time out, Toscanini liked his work ethics and they got along well, so the reviews for the Brooklyn born Tenor where favorable and because Toscanini picked him it brought him on TV to the public, at least all who had TV sets in 1949 which was rather new for the public.

@@shicoff1398 Richard Tucker may started not that easy as I thought, but he was the most reliable ever green pine at Met. I read on him, never late or miss a show, almost 800 performances...so hard to think of!
I am surprised at Toscanini's preference toward Peerce, for me I did not like his voice that much, maybe his early work be so different than later. Tucker's package is way stronger than his cousin. I also read something of their not that nice relation, maybe rumor that Peerce tried to discourage Tucker to go full force into operatic.
And if I sat next to GPS, I probably be turned around to watch him the whole time instead or speechless... maybe I will ask him why not marry Callas!(I am not serious...)
Met current director Peter mentioned his real experience of overhearing at the door of GDS Hotel room at NY, hearing Callas and him shouting toward each other, calling their relationship as partner and lover... I am not so sure of that, I feel that are not fit for loving relationship. I read some on GDS to have a good reputation of devotion, friendship with others, MDM especially, appreciated by many. Such a charm natural handsome, Pippo is also very playful(not playboy) to lose his fortune in gambling...
To me, it is obvious that Tucker is much more dynamic and crafty in singing than Pippo is. Maybe it is not fair to compare.
I am very excited and happy to know from your direct experience of their close relationship. This makes me loving to dig into theirs more...American Baritone and bass lineups are outstanding, on the tenor side, it is extra precious to have Tucker to "compete" with such a long list of great talents from Italy, Spain and Russian...
Thank you for your story, Happy Easter! I still remember the day of last one, We say goodbye to 2020 for good. Hope you can go back into Theatre to sit live performance some time soon...

Grandissime e inarrivabili. Punto

Callas, a better Tosca than Tebaldi. Di Stefano, the best Cavaradossi, ever.
