- Five people from five different nations suddenly find themselves on an alien spaceship where they are each given a container holding capsules. I saw this movie back in 1957 as a 14 year old kid. It was a time of Rock and Roll and young lovers walking hand and hand. Just 13 years after the atomic bombs were dropped, the Korean War and tensions in the world so tense, afraid of self destruction with atomic bombs. The makers of this movie have captured the way the world really was back then. Two of my older brothers were in the Korean War.

I'm one of the last Boomers and my dad was just to young for Korea and by the time Vietnam heated up he had finished his total commitment at age 29, married with 2 kids so he was considered ineligible for the draft. I, myself, spent 2 years stationed in West Germany during the hottest part of the cold war and we expected things to go south any time. I think the portrayal of the Soviet Union was spot on, but I can only hope that the US would behave in such a sane way in a real crisis of faith and morals.

That made me the youngest of the 5 Miller brothers who proudly server Our Country. I was stationed on a missile base guarding Buffalo and Niagara Falls area from the enemy. Little did we or the world realize how close the planet was about to be destroyed. You see, we were on missiles up high alert. The reason, it was the Cuban Missile Crisis, yep, we were so hyper because Russian would have sent their missiles over the North Pole and Canada, so naturally our bases would be the first thing destroyed. Because of the last surviving son act, my brother James was stationed in Japan, my brother John was stationed in Germany and I was safely tucked away in the middle, yeah, right! The 3 of us were all in the service at the same time but had to be kept separated. It was just like the movie Saving Private Ryan. My brothers Harold and Eugene had already served and were discharged. Yes, it was a terrifying moment in the world and all my brothers have passed away. At 79, it won’t be long before the 5 Miller brothers will once again be reunited.
Thanks for your text, the device was theorised by Enrico Fermi I think in 1925, the device being the H bomb, either way the thing worked, I have been born between a sensation of fighting which ceased in 1945 with a atomic war almost started in 1961, war seems to be the normal state of human existence.
Worthwhile and often overlooked 1957 sci-fi film which doesn't receive the buzz it deserves. A fine take on ideas presented in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) & similar 50s flicks. That THE STREAM posted The 27th Day speaks to a deeper level of appreciation for and knowledge of the genre. Nice. An underrated classic.
And btw, would we, in reality, pass this test? I think it depends on the individuals selected, their personalities, temperaments, and socioeconomic (not to mention political) backgrounds. I like to think that, given the right group, we'd pass.
One other item of potential note: How many civilizations were or are so noble that their ontology prevents invasion, especially of a technologically inferior potential colony/new home, even to save themselves from otherwise certain doom?
Also, it's worth noting that The 27th Day established a number of film tropes still in use today and featured in numerous feature-length and short films especially in the science fiction and horror genres but I'll let you determine for yourselves which situations and themes The 27th Day helped make "a thing".
If you enjoy The 27th Day I'd recommend, of course, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Red Planet Mars (w/Peter Graves) and of course It Conquered the World (both because it too reflects salient aspects of Cold War attitudes and concerns (not to mention sheer paranoia and xenophobia) and also because it stars both Peter Graves and Lee Van Cleef he he) among a number of 50s sci-fi movies that feature Cold War mentality themes including the epoch-making Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).
Finally, The 27th Day contains a number of now anachronistic and frequently amusing (and at times either offensive or even frightening) bits of dialogue as do all films which reflect well the time in which they were conceived and produced. A minor example of 50s-centric dialogue in The 27th Day includes:
"Rock and roll".
"What is it?"
"Music, almost".
In any event, one of the more underrated and virtually unheard-of 50's sci-fi gems that's well-worth a screening.
Those chairs in the spaceship used to be in my mom's kitchen back in 1963. She kept 'em for a lot longer than 27 days.

An intelligent and well written science fiction film for its day. Good writing, capable acting, and good film making. A classic that should be remembered.
Sure am enjoying these old classics that I watched every Friday night as a kid !!

Parts of this film hold up very well.
I beg to differ. This movie has the morality of a fanatical zealot who thinks its okay to murder anyone who disagrees with him. The aliens are completely dishonest dicks who trick humanity into exterminating part of itself, because apparently, that will make us worthy in their eyes, and they're too "moral" to do it themselves.
In addition, the character of Eve serves no purpose except to be a love interest for Jonathan. She never does a damn thing, because this is 1957 and women can't do things. Why does she even go to see Jonathan in the first place? She doesn't try to convince him to use or not use the pellets, so why is she even there? Because she needs a man to comfort her? Then why doesn't she go to her friend Harry the painter instead traveling from England to Los Angeles to see a man she barely knows? Makes no sense.
Then, when the Soviets open their box and threaten the U.S. with it, why doesn't the U.S. just threaten them right back? Jonathan has a box, and he could be anywhere in the world, so if the Soviets use their box, Jonathan can retaliate, and we have another stalemate and nothing has really changed. Come to that, how could we even be sure the Soviets were telling the truth when they say they've opened their box? Why would we believe them when we only have their word on it? No, none of this makes any sense. But if anyone realized this, the movie would be over.
I beg to differ. This movie is morally bankrupt and full of gaping plot holes.
What an enjoyable film, I'm surprised it isn't more widely known. I've always loved old sci-fi and had never heard of it before today.

Yes the 27th day was excellent, didn't expect that at all from the name of the movie.
I remember seeing this on TV when I was a kid. The clear plastic containers with the capsules really stood out to me because they looked so futuristic and I never forgot them, that's the only thing about this movie that I remember. I never knew the name of the movie and I have wanted to watch it again all my life. Thanks for putting this movie up, I'm so glad to have watched it again! The remaster is perfect!

The plastic containers reminded me of containers to store ITE hearing aids. They flip open to store them or to take them out. They didn't have those back in the 1950s. It was a look into the future!

I am so glad to have FINALLY seen this! Definitely needs to be seen by more people, and not just fans of sci-fi and vintage classic cinema! Not overlong, tightly scripted, an excellent minimalist approach, and suspenseful!

Always liked Gene Barry - War of the Worlds was his big show. Sadly, Valerie French left us too early; she died in 1990 at the age of 61 or 62, of leukemia. RIP miss French.
This is the first I've heard of this film. It tells a story based on a compelling and entertaining plot. Effectively portrayed on the heels of good acting, clear dialogue, and the special effects of the era. I recommend the film highly.
Yesterday I watched "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers." Today it's this. I am enjoying older classics much more nowadays. They seem to have a logical sense to their narrative that is markedly absent in filmmaking today. It's hard to tell a good story when 90% of a film's budget is spent on CGI effects.
CGI is a tool that lets filmmakers show things they couldn't show otherwise. A good script is a good script, whether you use CGI or not. This movie does not have a good script. Its logic is flawed and its morals are bankrupt.

And when studio execs keep rewriting scripts and when each movie has to fit in or launch a cinematic universe. It’s amazing the movies today have such amazing FX technology but I prefer these movies. Also, so often there isn’t a single relatable person that you care about, everyone is a jerk or nonentity. I saw that Scorsese movie everyone is praising and have never been so bored. The native Americans were passive nonentities and the crooks weren’t just repulsive but boring. Compare that to Goodfellas. They were terrible human beings but they were interesting
Film Actors Guild
This very fine film should not be missed. It is a complex story wonderfully written. The cast is altogether excellent with great performances by all. I can't praise them enough. It proves that great films can be made with a limited budget. Released in 1957. it is not nearly as well known as it so highly deserves to be. In its very simple. direct way, it is a masterpiece. The remastering of the film gives us a beautiful print. I am grateful it has been retained in the original black and white. I can only repeat, this very fine film should not be missed.

It is as if the movie going public ignored this more interesting story after seeing "The Day the Earth Stood Still"; which tried to cram leftist ideology down their throats. This movie was about Life and Death, not Life OR death. That was a very interesting plot twist.

I watched this movie as a child. And as a science teacher, I used this movie as a great illustration about the concepts of time and relativity. The alien states that because they are traveling at near the speed of light, time has sopped. The man looks down at his watch which is stopped. That is an interesting understanding of the concept of time: it is only something that is measured by a watch. If time had stopped, there would be no "time" to look at his watch. Also, special relativity states that everyone in an inertial time frame would measure time normally. Everyone and everything on the ship, including the watch, would experience time as normal. It would only be when someone on the ship compared time with someone who stayed on earth that the difference would be seen.
I knew it. You just confirmed to me what I had figured out. The science of today is based on 1950s sci fi movies, including the cause of climate change hoax.
@@dawnemile7499 Yes; it's always mis-portrayed in old movies...Like in "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers", the aliens state that "this is all happening between the beats of your heart or the ticks of your watch", when their hearts should still beat and their watches tick. In relativity, the heartbeats and watch ticks of the people on Earth should stop!
And climate change is a hoax; I remember the days of "Ecology" back in 1970. The world of overpopulation and Soylent Green never came to pass. We've got at least another hundred years to correct things, and I think we will.

If I were making this movie I'd have Gene look at his watch and see the hands not moving and the Alien seeing this and suggesting he forgot to wind his watch.

At 69 years old thought I saw all the old scifi films. This one is a great surprise.

What an absolute gem of a movie, and a timely movie for us in 2022...a very good look at the best of human nature, sadly mental deformity rules the world we live in, if only it could be eradicated.

Arnold Moss had the most astounding voice and presence as an actor. Always memorable when he appeared.
Other actors that rivalled him were Jose Ferrer and Burl Ives

That is true. But until the early 20th century, it was believed that the entire universe was little more than the Milky Way galaxy in a vast expanse of nothing, so it was more plausible that there could indeed be other such "universes."
This is a good film. The storyline is original..if this is a budget movie they did a good job. Thank you for showing it

@@lorrainearmstrong7587 While this particular film is a Columbia production, there were plenty of sci-fi, horror and fantasy films produced with little funding. Like, say, Roger Corman's classic The Undead which was shot entirely in an old supermarket on what today would be considered a shoestring budget. Of course, maybe that was your point to begin with: that directors didn't let a little thing like budget stand in their way.

I read the book as a teenager, back in the late 1950's. (from the SF section of the Miami library. Over 60 years ago!) Never inagined that 60 years (!!!) later I would be looking at a movie version of it, on a small hand-held device. 😢😮

I remember seeing this on TV when I was a kid, probably in the late 60s/early 70s.
The idea of giving half a dozen ordinary people the chance to make such a momentous decision, and contrasting that with what the governments thought made a big impression on me.
Although I haven't seen the film in decades, I've never forgotten the scene where the guy throws his box into the ocean.
BTW: Watching it again now, the voice of the news reader reminds me of a bunch of American cartoons. He did an awful lot of voice work in the 60s and 70s!

Agreed. Quite fascinating and it does have many original elements that have become standard sci-fi tropes but it uses ideas presented in the earlier sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still.
I've loved every role I've ever seen George Voscovec portray. He's a master of character, passion in every performance.

Gene Barry was the star of the awesome 1953 War of the Worlds movie. It was one of my favorite 2 movies as a kid. The other one was the 1939 movie The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn.
Errol Flynn, in his part in the Robin Hood movie, another actor said to him "I am a better swordsman , Flynn replied "yes, but I have narrower hips."
The 1953 version of War of the Worlds was and remains a masterpiece.

No better of a movie to watch on a cold Saturday morning in February, this takes me back to when I was a kid in the 70's, we had a local TV station that had a mid-morning show called Super Host, he was a certain ethnic (Slovak, or maybe Polish) bumbling Super Man who was the host of either sci-fi movies or The Three Stodges, good memories
I watched it to the end. I usually dump out of most 50s Sci fi. 1957 was the break out year for a new revolution in Sci fi.
In 57 my family went to see 'Forbidden Planet'. It set a new standard for plot and cinematography.
Metropolis was a stunner for a silent sf film. I also liked the silent fantasy film, Nosferatu.
The voice of the alien actor is so recognizable from his appearance on Star Trek, then there’s Colonel Klienk from Hogan’s Heroes. Love these old classics.
Don't forget legendary voice actor Paul Frees as the American TV news reporter.

Line between good and evil is so mixed up even knowingly these days so it sucks . People do not want to act good or think right in my town in USA . They like it to cheat and take advantage of other . And just because it has gone on doesn't mean it has to be acceptable by the masses today . It is rightly called abnormal .

Yes I was thinking about that too. It was a fantasy ending not putting in perspective the power of religion causing all this fear and anxiety and mistrust for other people. And they install it in their particular cultures in most areas around world. This movie was centered around religion it's fears illogical prejudes the world would have been far gone already it would have been a very short.. movie
Very nice piece of work. Ought to be a classic to remember 😃 Although made in 1957 the story, unfortunately, still is very actual. Paranoia and distrust mainly with the Military and Governments With reason. . Genius from the Alien to give these weapons of mass destruction to normal, sensible, non biased citizens. They saved the world. 2 out of 5 of them really sufferd, one of them even died trying to protect humanity. There is a very clear message in this movie. Don't miss it.

First time seeing this excellent film. In a similar vein to The Day The Earth Stood Still in that there was a harsh ultimatum but without spoiling the ending I love how this film got to grapple with the issue and its aftermath.
On a separate note you can really see how stories like this shaped sci-fi, especially Star Trek for decades to come.

If you haven't noticed in this movie, there is a scene where the newsman is delivering the news marks the only rare screen appearance of voice actor Paul Frees. He has voiced variable animated programs throughout his career.
He also apperared in front of the camera in "The Thing from Another World" and "War of the Worlds".
There's an urban legend that Frees had also worked as an undercover narcotics cop ... He also did the female voiceover for Curtis in "Some Like It Hot".

I was quite surprised to see him in this film. As you point out there are very few times he was seen, countless times he was heard. There's a very touching clip on TH-cam of a personal recording he made giving encouragement to the son of a work colleague who was interested in becoming a voiceover artist. As a voice actor myself he has been a tremendous inspiration to me and some of my colleagues.
He also briefly appeared in “his kind of woman” with Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell.
I can't believe I never saw or heard of this sci-fi movie. Like most movies and TV shows back in the day are well made and great acting, unlike the trash on today. ( Way to many commercials)

GB did such a good job in '53 "War of the Worlds" that he came back 4 yrs later for this flick. Loved VF's opening beach scene with the '54 Jag. Of course, we should never forget professor Neuhaus who gave his life to prove the 3K dia wipe out, aka 1956's "Queequeg" from the good ship "Pequot".
All in all a fun movie, especially in retaining the b&w screen. I'd give it a 6.5/10 just for story and direction.
Don't forget the "Burke's Law" TV series that always opened with him as a rich high-powered LA lawyer driving his classic 1964 Silver Cloud Rolls Royce through Beverly Hills.
Years ago, I joined a friend for dinner at a well-known Upper Eastside restaurant in Manhattan, and Gene Barry was dining with friends at the table next to me.
Why did Prof Neuhaus die, does not sound like he fit the template, unless he was a had a well kept secret...

This is a nice companion piece with the Angry Red Planet, and The Day Earth stood still.

I watched this when I was 13 and couldn't wait to see it again. This will be the 3rd or 4th time I've seen it since the mid 70s
I remember the guy playing the alien best from watching the original Star Trek series as a kid back in the 1960's. He played "Kodos the Executioner" in the ST:TOS episode, "The Conscience of the King".
I really enjoyed this film . It had a good story , no special effects or blood n guts neccesary. They really did make some good films years ago 👏
This film is based on a fascinating premise! Unfortunately, it concludes with a silly, cartoonish ending. What I really love is that they remastered this in high-definition! Now I just noticed they have one of my favorite films "The Day the Earth Stood Still" available for viewing here on TH-cam also, but that is still only in 480p mode. Surely TDTESS deserves to be remastered to 1080p too.

A wonderful movie , great stars and suspense.
In the mid 60's my buddies and I would sleep out under the stars hoping to see a UFO. People were seeing them everywhere and we knew it was just any day now and they'd land in Washington... or in our backyard. I practiced what I would say to them in my mind. "Do you know how to cure my dad's cancer?"

I didn't find this film "Cheesy" at all .Infect I found it rather intriguing ,its a nice story with curate facts of the humans race .

intelligent script like:
- we are traveling at the speed of light so time stops as you know - showing a clock standing still, basic physics was not really their thing.
- therefore you will loose no time, :) they will loose gazillion of millenia and a few years more, if they travel at 100% light speed (time-dilation was already known in 1957, obviously not by the 'intelligent' scripters)
- and then the alien says: "forgive me time is short" - now what ? time stands still and now no time

I remember watching this movie one dull Saturday afternoon at home in the early '70s, utterly fascinated with the story, when my dad burst in and said we all had to go see some relatives off on a voyage. I begged to stay home and finish the movie, but my dad put his foot down. I never got to see the ending and was crestfallen.
Well, today, over a half century later, I finally saw the ending of "The 27th Day" here on youtube. Nice print, BTW, but man, did the ending suck. I guess my dad was actually doing me a favor!
This film definitely stands out against the usual cheap, cheesy and bunk science in the movies of it's day. A little gem of a film.
The great Arnold Moss also appeared as Kodos, The Executioner, in the Star Trek episodes The Conscience of The King. He has a terrific voice and was a great actor.

we need to eliminate those who we think are bad based on our particular bias? that is bordering on a god complex, no?
Apart from the obvious strengths of this movie: holy moly, what a stunt when the scientist is hit by the car! Though it is easy to note that the stuntman does not actually get hit by the second car, this is one of the boldest stunts I‘ve ever seen. The trust between the two car drivers and the walking stuntman is incredible (maybe the second car was tied to a rope to stop its path at the correct spot, but nevertheless…).
Yes, I noticed that fine stunt too. The only thing it lacks is a good angle, if only the camera had been placed further to the right, you would never have been able to see that the car didn't actually make contact. Nevertheless, one of the best stunts I've ever seen.
About the time this movie was made, there was a guy who was a professional at getting hit by a car for insurance money and not get hurt who showed exactly how he did it. He didn't do it with stunt drivers or tricks or anything. He had impeccable timing and would walk in front of an unsuspecting driver and get hit and not get hurt but would put on a damned good act.
It's nice to see a sci-fi movie where the fate of humanity is a hopeful and positive one! I hope the same for our broken planet.

28:59 damn, very subtle. I was born in '62 and as a boy of course was into sci fi. I had never heard of this movie. Valerie French was a hottie.
This is a seriously good sci fi film of its time. An engaging story, well scripted and acted. Like all the best sci fi, the film uses fantasy to comment on real world concerns. You can see the film as as an allegory of the nuclear arms race and hints at the frightening concept of mutually assured destruction.
Wonderful film, which has an attitude we all need to get back to. But - where's the bathroom in the tack room???

Many are well thought out but told in ham-fisted manners which don't give the ideas the justice they deserve.
This one is great because of the ethical implications!
When one thinks of a united world, unfettered by religious and ideological dogmas, the things, the good, that could be accomplished... Star Trek might not be as far off as one might think...

I also compared the same two movies, they reminded of of one another, love the black and white hope no one ever tries to color either one.
