Under Pressure is absolute genius, because they created this song more or less accidential. David was invited to the studio where Queen was recording that day, and later on they had a couple of drinks together. John Deacon almost created this song by accident and forgot about it shortly after. Luckily for all of them (and us) Brian May remembered the bass rhythm John made, and so they created this masterpiece.

That they were able to take two different performances in different times and seemlessly meld them together is a testament to just how good both Bowie and Freddie Mercury are as performers. If you didn't know and were just listening to the song you would think they were doing this live together. And quite frankly even though I have heard all versions of this song , this quite simply is the best one out there.

  • @elbruces

Yeah, let's go ahead and get religious on this. Not many people are willing to truly be Christ-like, although they sure talk about it a lot. Freddie and David elucidated exactly what that entails, and what the costs are in doing that. This song is more deeply Christian than any song in the "Christian music" category.

Can't really say "no musicians with talent" so much as "no musicians with freedom". Studios let the talent be the talent back then - now everything is micromanaged for maximum profitability - how is the toy line doing? the lunch boxes and other mech? Accountants with spreadsheets are th root of all evil. And, of course, that all influences which musicians survive the studio's selection process. Only the most pliant.

When he realized it’d be cheaper than the lawsuit, Vanilla Ice bought the rights to Under Pressure. So now, anytime it plays on the radio or someone streams it, he gets the royalties. I’m not sure what Queen gets if anything however.

    • @barbaramendoza2202

@JessieKnecht Yes, Vanilla Ice went around saying that, probably to make himself look good. However, the Interviewer checked out Ice’s statement. But watching this it also makes me happy, because they will always live on in media for people to discover. I truly envy the youth of today because they have such an incredible wealth of music to discover, and its literally just a click or a tap away.

I have a vinyl album collection of just under 600. Albums from music starting as early as the 40s and 50s then starting to pick up steam in the mid 60s, and hundreds from the 70s. It starts to slow down again in the 80s and on, but I discovered a young lady from Norway about 6 years ago. She entered Norway's Got Talent at the age of 7, and just after turning 8 won it all. Republic Records signed her at 14 to her families demands, and now that she is out of school she is picking up again. She is now 16 and she brings a lot of older classics back to life with a new interpretation. It is my opinion that she will make her place in the annals of music history as one of the all time greats. I have 3, no 4 playlists of her on my TH-cam page. If you have never heard Angelina Jordan you should check my playlists. She brings a tear to my eyes with nearly every song she sings. She was invited to appear on America's Got Talent: The Champions 3 years ago where she performed her version of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and was the only contestant to get a Golden Buzzer. The remaining members of Queen were so impressed by her performance that they posted it to their Twitter page saying "What a rendition" and gave her permission to copyright her version. She is about the only artist I listen to these days. Here is the link to my playlists if you're interested. th-cam.com/channels/y9SAFUhYQyyKRmSd4ehpJA.htmlplaylists?view=1&sort=lad&flow=grid

Most don't understand that terror. They skip it by becoming tribal, and joining teams instead of paying attention for themselves.
Tribalism should only be applied to sports, work(to a degree), and your immediate family/friends(for safety concerns. Tribalism is a remnant animal tendency. What this world is about is essentially this.

Fun fact: Queen and David Bowie were recording at the same studios, this song is the result of a drunken jam session they had together. It’s Deacy’s riff (bass player) but he’d forgotten it by the time they came back from dinner, but luckily Roger (drummer) remembered it. Vanilla Ice was an idiot if he thought he could steal such an iconic riff and get away with it. Seeing someone so youthful experiencing this and falling in love with it so much is so endearing. I enjoyed it for the first time again vicariously through you and it made me emotional - knowing these two legends are gone but their legacy lives one through music lovers such as you and me.

BUT for something completely different and haunting 'Who Wants to Live Forever" and 'Show Must Go On" The former is my personal #1 favorite and makes me so overwhelmed with feels every time I hear it. i know you are deeply moved by many of the songs you've heard on this channel (I've seen most of your stuff by now). I believe you would deeply enjoy and love that song (both really),.

Under pressure was co-written by David Bowie and Queen. I believe that performance was from Live Aid, at Wembley Stadium in England and it was shown all over the world live in 1985.

Mercury is in the same stadium (Wembley) as the Live Aid performance, but a year later. Bowie's performance is from the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, where Mercury's part was sung by Annie Lennox.

Your reactions are a mixture of wonderful and lovely. Queen take you on a musical journey with each song, and every song will last you a lifetime. The greatest band in my humble opinion, when I’m feeling a little blue, I whack on a load of Queen songs and hey presto, the mood is lifted. Keep going it’s a joy seeing your reactions

Yes, the original by Queen and Bowie. Released in 1981 and got to no.1 in the UK. Charted in USA in 1982. Classic collaboration there! 😃

It was mid-to-late 80's (87?) - the height of the AIDS crisis. This song is about caring for each other, because laws, at the time, often prevented a gay's lover from visiting them in the ICU ("family(even if they hate you)" only), and so many were dying alone or surrounded by people who hated them. The AIDS victim would be taken from all they love and processed by the medical and legal communities.
But they didn't limit the song to that. Such shunnings and discriminations for any of a thousand reasons have been part of the human condition since - well -humans. We must redefine Love to be broader, and try again, or we will lose our humanity.

Now you should check out David Bowie; Starman, Young Americans, Fame, Heroes, Modern Love, Let’s Dance, Blue Jean to name a few of his hits. He did a lot of experimental music, art pop and some things that hit the mainstream. Very much like Queen.

Ice Ice Baby? BLASPHEMY (kidding). Vanilla did get sued by Queen & Bowie & lost ... even his “shirt”. Love this song it’s my ringtone!! The famous baseline was written by John Deacon (Queen’s assist). Song written by Queen & Bowie during a drunken jam session. Talk about mega-talent!! Must do Queen live performances.... the talent oozes from Freddie, Brian, Roger, & John. SOMEBODY TO LOVE in Montreal 1981 is a great way to start.

  • @BPhillips2000

Re: Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice initially sampled the bassline without securing permission from or even crediting Queen/Bowie. He was eventually forced (after Queen/Bowie's reps threatened to sue him) to credit them & pay a portion of Ice Ice Baby's royalties as compensation (this is why you now always see credit given to the original writers when works are sampled in music)

It's so very interesting how when you grow up you find out how many songs that are covers and all the ways artists borrowed (legally or not) riffs and such. The music scene will never be the same after that.
Glad you enjoyed the awesome song!

Queen is music for every moment in your life and with the other unique voice from GB, David Bowie together with Freddie Mercury it's a wonderful combo.
The performance you saw, was from the tribute concert in 92 and they played a record from Freddie to sing it as a last duet like they did 86 in Wembley.

  • @richd9379

When they recorded this for the album, Freddie gave David the lyrics and said sing it how you think it should be done. Thats why it worked so well.
