Ya it really is incredible. I'm not even big on wide angles, but this lens hooked me. I'm continuously surprised by the image quality. It rivals the 56mm for my new favorite.
Thanks for this review. On the back of it I've just purchased the 16 - I totally agree with you, this lens is breathtaking. Im not a fan of wide angles generally, but this is so versatile - a real joy to use. Thanks again.
Agreed! The best prime lens (regardless of specs) that I can recall ever using. Amazingly versatile: from landscape to street photography, from architectural photography to portraiture, it's performance is mind-blowing! Superb for museum and night photography, its low light performance is superb. Especially remarkable is its rendition of colour - something that museum work especially underscores.
My new 16mm 1.4 should be here no later than Saturday. I cant wait. I am really loving my XT3. Another big plus is being able to build up my lens line up a lot easier and quicker than with my 5d4 because of the cost factor.
Currently I’m using X-T2 with 35mm f2 lens. I do landscape, occasional portraits and street photography. And very particular about quality of the image, price is not a concern. Please suggest, which one to buy 16-55mm f2.8 or 16mm f1.4?
I order a 16mm as my Xmas gift to myself, but I'm not suppose to know that .. It's secret And your review on it gave me the boost that I needed .. Thanks from Norway
i know that, theyre sending it perfected in Jan15 or so. most people didnt change, since it only affects CF mode and then only rarely it has ONE bug, that nobody i heard has experienced. not bugS
First, I would like to thank you for your very informative videos. They have been very helpful to me in making my photography purchases. I am currently looking at the 16mm f1.4 and the 10-24mm f4, which would you suggest as a good wide angle walkaround lens? Thank you and have a good day!
+Clien Guico thats the great mystery everyone asks the 16mm is their best lens, its the TITS but of course a wide zoom is FAR more useful, really the 2nd most important lens to own. so its a rock and hard place of being stuck between the two..........the real premise is that if youre shooting landscapes, then the 16mm otherwise, id get the most useful one in general, the 10 24 but ponder on that before making a choice
+Theoria Apophasis Thank you for the quick repsonse! I did not expect that as I know you are a very busy person. I decided to get the Fuji 10-24 as it is the more flexible of the two.Do you have any suggestions on where I could get them for a cheaper price? Again, I greatly appreciate all your help.
I was very patient on ebay. I found someone who sold it to me for 430$. i just got it yesterday. 😂 I was awake 3am in the morning and he had it up on ebay for only 2hrs. And I bought it without any second thoughts that I will find someone who will sell it lower than that. Now I just need 56mm 1.2. And my kit is complete. I have 16mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4,
Hey Ken I Bought this Fuji 16mm brand new about 1 year ago now December 2018 the lens is doing a Loud grinding noise when autofocus on a XT2.....Saw one video (from Russia?) on TH-cam seems to confirm this issue....Do you know what the problem would be?
The 90mm is also a new lens in the fuji lineup. Will you be doing a video about that one? I'm really interested in your thoughts on it. Thanks for sharing!
+migui8850 ive tested it, and people keep asking me about, it, it sucks for many valid reasons. if i say why one more time, i might bust at the seams. :)
Would you choose this lens over the 10-24 ? This is the decision I need to make in the context of travel photography with a focus on landscapes and day to day cultural shooting as an aside. I currently have the XT1 with 18mm and 35mm (1.4) lenses - I would sell the former lens and buy either the 16 or 10-24... would be interested to hear your opinion.
Theoria Apophasis i just have 2 fuji lens, 16mm and 50mm, on the 16 is more noticeable. I'm new to the fuji system, I have panasonic camera and lenses and they are way quiet, Its like always loved fuji cameras for the film experience till you grab one ;) if in autofocus mode is noisy I dont care, but in manual mode?? I actually value more panasonic system now, you have a great manual focus experience, it works amazing! (even though they dont have hard stops) just the last 4 pictures are from the fuji all the rest are from panasonic... www.flickr.com/photos/pedrowilde When I get home I will record video while manual focusing to show you
Hi im planning to get a 16mm f1.4 but i also have a tokina 11-16 f2.8 ver 2 for nikon do you think i should still the 16mm f1.4, do you think that lens is better than the tokina?
Hi Ken, after 2 year using the fuji 16 1.4, i just notice the front or the second front element show milky haze when i point the flash light through inside, i just notice when using flash light. Is it the glue separation between 2 element ? Btw, the image output look normal. Do you have any experience with this, pls answer. Thank you.
Has anyone used this lens when recording video? The focus on mine makes a grumbly noise with a slight vibration throughout - which gets picked up when using an on-camera mics. Such as the video mic pro , which is an issue for people intending to shoot video using this lens on the XT2. I've got a brand new one and after reading comments on the web it seems that Fuji doesn't make all lenses equal , with some having more audible focus in AF/MF than others. Does anyone have the same issue with theirs? I'm considering taking it back which is a shame as it's great for stills.
Hi Ken, I am looking to purchase a wide for landscape and some night sky photography. I am considering the 16mm and the 10-24 . Would the F4 aperture be too restrictive on the 10-24 for night sky phorogrpahy and hence should purchase the 16mm? any advice would be great. Love your work by the way.
I now have both the 10-24 and the xf16. I can full say that 10-24 is great and the 16 is just the best. I have gone on trips with both lens and prefer the 16mm as it is wide enough for me and it restrict me from going to 10mm which I often do on the zoom. I often try to retrict myself from going to the widest end of the zoom and most of the time I find myself at around 16mm.Also, the picture quality of the 16mm is top quality. It is sharp at f1.4. Unlike the 18mm that become decent at f4. The 10-24 will now be my interior decor and xf16 will be my travel lens. I hope this helps.
What happens when you take two very strong magnets and force them together with a press and keep them there,, if you ran a bunch of tests and and took different measurements do you think every thing would come out normal?
I'm happy you changed your mind & have her look. Now we can actually have a English language review that isn't just aesthetic, like ya boy BHT. Also, now I'm sold. TY!
Thanks for the video, can I ask... Is Fuji doing some lens correction post optics, pre raw file that fixes the naturally occurring faults in a given lens. Could this be a factor as to why it seems such a knockout achievement for a super wide?
+James Kennedy no, and the firmware guys that rip their warez apart indicate nothing other than ID data on lenses. even the best correction could never add such IQ and natural saturation, no warez on earth can do that to any picture at that level. this is one of those insanely rare EPIC lenses. hell i paid $800 for it, and thats ON SALE
+Theoria Apophasis only thinking that this is already demonstrated w the X100 and the telephoto converters that require a menu setting to be flicked over when the (essentially poorly performing) teleconverter is added. In that case there's the ability to see the before and after (menu setting on or off) and both examples print to a Raw file. In that example the teleconverter has no 'brains' so the human has to flick the menu function. But just thinking... If that secret sauce (lens profile correction) is functioning pre-raw file in the X100, it's possible that Fuji could roll this out across the board for their smart lenses w electronic communication? That, and everything else you've mentioned that is no-doubt the tits.
I'm switchin to Fuji system from Canon. Still waiting my XT2 and 23mm/f2. Planning to complite my trinity with 56mm/f1.2 and 16mm/f1.2. Still considering between 10-24 and 16 tho.
Theoria Hello, Please I am very interested. I have a peculiar probably silly question. Is there any possibility or away that the superb Fuji 16 f/1.4 will be compatible with a D500. If the answer is yes, would you recommend it instead of the Nikor 20 f/2.8 for astrophotography? I can not take this lens out of my mind. If not, why NIkon can not make such a good wide angle lens? Hope to hear from you. Many thanks Flora
The fuji 16mm is great for almost everything, but comparatively poor for astrophotography, due to poor coma. A great astrophotography lens is the Samyang (or Rokinon, depending on your country) 12mm f2. Very cheap (I bought it for £200 in the UK used) and outstanding astrophotography lens, and also very good ultra-wide (18mm equivalent full frame). It is a manual lens though, manual focus only. It is available in a number of different mounts - I've got the Fuji one. I don't know if they do it in Nikon mount, but fair chance they do.
I need a lens to shoot my friends band in typical dark New York clubs. Boxes, Fuji xt2 and xt20. I own the 35mm 1.4. I need to fit more in my photos because I’m right in front of, or to the side of the band. I am sorry to ask, you are so busy!! I am desperate!!!! Looks like the 16mm is a good choice. I love the 18-135 you “sold me”.... Advice....Please kind sir?
Hey Ken, I have 90mm f2 and just bought 50mm f2 because of your review lol but I also saw this 16mm f1.4 rev, now I'm thinking of selling the 90mm f2 to buy 16mm and keep 50mm. Do you think it's a good Idea? pls respond if ever you come across this comment I really wanna know your opinion. Thanks!
As you've said, every company makes some stinkers and some knockouts. I've used Fujinon lenses for large format and some of them are as good as any of the Schneider, Rodenstock or Nikkors. Always welcome to have a good surprise.
I have my x100s and love it except for not being able to change lens. I ma looking hard at the XT1 and maybe waiting a few months for new version XT2 but I wonder what your view is for switching to the full frame Sony ? I like low light photography and Bokeh, I am thinking about the sony but I had an a6000 and sold it I like my x100s better. Thanks for your videos. William
Just picked up one of these. I'm not much of a prime shooter, but I just couldn't ignore the recommendations, plus I'm looking forward to using it in low light and as a pseudo macro lens.
Aloha angry photographer, i am primarily a nikon shooter and have the 24mm 1.4G and shot with it for a while now . i was wondering if you have any thoughts on this 24mm 1.4g vs 16mm 1.4 fuji wr .. i do use both nikon and fuji by the way thanks
the full frame experience is something but im assuming that the fuji 16mm lens is taylored towards higher megapixel sensors.. 24mm 1.4 is kinda long in the tooth in terms of tech since megapixel race is increasing each year.. i own a d810 and love my 24mm 1.4 but im hearing other lenses like tamron sp are pairing better with newer sensors.. ive gotten to try out 16mm at our local store here in hawaii and i have to say it competes well.. i still have my 24-70 and cant justify keeping the 1.4 when i want to buy the 16mm for light weight :) now one question, if u had to keep one lens 24mm 1.4 or 16mm which would u keep? . knowing u do have a nikon 24-70.. :) thanks buddy for reading this :)
Dude - question - if anyone would know, it would be you.... I know they're different focal lengths but I'm looking for a wide for portraits and I was first thinking of trying the Zeiss Touit 12mm. But then I saw your reviews of the Fuji 16mm. Maybe I can overlook 4mm difference ;) Have you used both? Can you tell me which is the better lens? Thanks.
hey Bob question for ya. I have a fuji xt1 and a Nikon d610 I have the 16 1.4 for the fuji and was thinking of selling/trading it for the Nikon 20mm 1.8 what's your thoughts on the subject I value your opinion thanks
I am loving this lens. I went out and purchased it mostly based on this review and holy jumping sh!t balls is it ever good. I am not a pixel peeper but the image quality of this Ken's just jumps out at you. The build quality is like most other fujinon x series, like a brick sh!t house. I can go on but I'd be repeating what you said in the review. Once again Ken, thank you for imparting you knowledge on us. You help me make smart decisions.
SO glad you tested this lens out! I've heard many great things about it, but appreciate your opinion on the lens. Question, have you tested out the 90mm lens yet, or are you planning on it if you haven't yet?
Oh really? it must be so good then since your review of Nikkor is also very very good. Haha ... thanks. Btw i'm going to get Tokina 100mm for my XT1 based on your suggestion. Still waiting for my Metabones adapter to come though ... anyway thanks for making all the informative and objective videos, how i wish there were more "angry photographers' on youtube ... :)
They know bloody well how to drain your wallet, those nifty little Fuji buggers. First you pick up one of those intriguing little cameras and think "not too bad for the price, indeed." Then you get a lens, and then a vertical grip and an other lens, and yet another one... And in no time you got yourselve a whole new System, even though you just thought "I will not spend £700.-- on Fuji glass, even if hit on the head hard," ey mate? ;-) Same here, but the worst part of it is, more often than not I leave my old treasures at home in favour of the toy.
OK, I'll continue to use my Nikkor 105mm F/2.5 for that FL with an adapter. Here is Scott Bourne's from weshootfuji.com review of the XF 90mm, he thinks it is pretty damn good: weshootfuji.com/2015/09/25/resistance-is-futile-my-purchase-mini-review-of-the-fujifilm-xf-90mm-f2-telephoto-lens/
+Theoria Apophasis the 90mm is probably Fujis best lens. Optics are phenomenal. It's sharp wide open all across the frame (but sharpness is not everything), there are little to no aberrations (nearly apochromatic, no coma, no distortion, no spherical aberrations,...) Microcontrast and bokeh are outstanding too. If one is not blown away by the 90mm, he got a bad example.
Got one few weeks ago, based only on test shots and some reviews. After a big disappointment from Fuji X100T purchase (returned that camera back to the shop in less than 24 hours) that everyone has been raving about I took all the reviews with a big big reserve. I owned Canon 24mm f1.4 L for many years and it has been my favourite lens. So I was really really worried whether I did the right thing when I purchased the 16mm from Fuji. The more I was relieved when I first saw my own pictures, from my own camera, on my own 27" screen at 100% zoom (yes I pixel peeped, so what, I was worried). This lens is indeed fantastic. You said it all so I won't go into details. It's all I was dreaming about to have in a wide, fast lens. I was also specifically interested on how this lens will render bokeh. I know it's strange for many ppl as they don't consider this as an important parameter for wide lens. But hey, why not? With apertures reaching f1.4 there will be plenty of things out of focus so of course it should be important. Specially taking into account the minimal focal distance of this lens. To make the story shorter - there is nothing I miss compared to my all time favourite, Canon 24mm f1.4 L. I even have a feeling that this lens is sharper wide open than my canon.. There is just two things that I don't like about this lens, but none is related to image quality and it's really just cosmetics. 1) aperture ring is very loose, it's easy to change the aperture by accident and I've to check it often to make sure it does not move. And despite that sometimes I take a shot at a different aperture that I originally wanted to. I'd very much prefer the stiffer aperture ring as can be found on 35mm f2. 2) lens hood. This is pure cosmetics. But I don't like the plastic tulip design. I think it's unnecessarily big and does not match the classic Fuji design, specially on XPRO1 (XPRO2 soon). I know it's reversible, but for me that's losing time, I prefer smaller lens hoods that are non-reversible so I can keep it in my bag with the lens hood on and ready for action. Fuji offers metal alternative which looks beautiful and seems well engineered, the LH-X16. But it's almost 100 EURO. For a lens hood that's crazy taking into consideration that Fuji XPRO1 body is currently on sale for 399 EURO. Also it's 10% of the price of the actual lens (hell, it's 25% of a Fujinon 35mm f2!!). Despite that I'll be getting it, because I want to protect my lens, I want something quick and ready for action and something less obtrusive than the plastic tulip design lens hood and better matching the camera design (for me it's important how the tools I use look and feel). But I've to say I'm a bit mad at Fuji to give it such a price tag. For me it's very expensive, but they didn't really gave me another choice when they included the .. "unfortunate" plastic tulip hood.
+Theoria Apophasis Fuji XPRO1 (otherwise 5d mk iii user).. can't wait to see the new xpro2. Xpro1 is a sweet camera, I love it, but the AF speed is killing me. Metal vented lens hoods - did you find one for 16mm? All I found is this: www.afshoot.com/shop/product/metal-wide-lens-hood-for-lens-with-67mm-filter-thread/ looks perhaps too wide :) tnx in advance.
I have owned all of the X mount primes except the 90mm. Personally, I would take the 18mm f2 over the 16 f1.4 (which I sold fairly quickly) any day of the week. I just love the images from it that 18mm. The 16mm just didn't do it for me. Technically perfect, but just didn't suit me; too big, too heavy and a little too wide for my use as an environmental portrait lens and dare I say it? A bit too perfect.. As a technical exercise, hats off fuji - it is an amazing lens. As something for /me/ to use to make images? Nah. The 18mm I find charming in every way. Despite the Internet hate, the 18mm is one of my favourite lenses of all time (and I have owned a LOT of glass) as where the 16mm just didn’t do it for me. Wouldn’t the world be boring if we all agreed though :)
lol, ok so I do own the 18mm for the one specific use case that it works well for - environmental portraits in spaces too tight for a 23mm. Just so happens that's a good proportion of my photography. The 16mm feels just a bit too wide, and unrelenting sharpness isn't really necessary - the 'gentle' (kind way of saying not super sharp lol) look of the 18mm works well for that - esp in B&W. If I was trying to shoot landscapes with it i'd probably end up throwing it in a lake.
I'm impatiently waiting for this bitch now. I have the XT-1 and figure this should marry up lovely. Good to see it impresses you because I take what you say to heart when it comes to gear. cheers.
Thought you where hating the lens at first. I was thinking how can I love this lens soooo much and someone else hates it. Then I realized you where being facetious.
Hello. Switching from Nikon to Fujifilm. (Traveled Latvia, Holland and now France with my X100F and it’s been awesome). I use the 60mm Nikon for my oil painting shoots and was wondering if this would be ok for that, given the macro possibilities, and if not what you’d recommend for the XT-2. Thanks for these great in-depth videos. It’s been cool seeing your #’s rise the last few years.
So the lens of the year award goes to ... Tamron 15-30mm or Fuji 16mm ? How is the barrel distortion on the 16mm ? I love the Nikon 20mm 3.5 because it's so minimal.
I left off the Distagon 35mm because I thought it was out before 2015; I know you love it. Barrel distortion on the Fuji 16mm must not be too bad since I didn't hear you mention it .
You made me break every rule I followed from the book rich dad poor dad deym. I’m just now waiting for the vintage mf lenses I bought to arrive haha again, all from your recommendations! You both make people happy and broke(jk) hahahaha thanks man!
+Theoria Apophasis Why would they exclude OIS on this compared to the 10-24? Isn't being able to shpot at slower shutter speeds always nice? Similar priced lenses but obviously one f1.4 vs f4.0.
what do you think of this lens (16 f1.4) + the 35mm f2 as initial set for an X-t2? I like landscapes, environmental portrait and street photography. Can I cover these genders with these 2 lenses?
I've been wandering around, thinking that the 35mm f2 WR is, the tits, and really enjoying it. Now I find the 16 f1.4 WR has, also, been declared the tits. I already have the 14mm f2.8, and I've been enjoying the unusual composition a 21mm equivalent imposes, and thinking, that, well, it's the tits. Nonetheless, if this was product from the same creative period, as the 35mm f2, they could have been a pair of tits, and I needed both of them in my hands. For around the same money, I could get the wide zoom (10-24mm), and I've seen your video, where you suggest that just that single lens, makes my entire collection redundant, as it is sharper, or better in some other way, than any of the primes it's range covers. I've based my collection of lenses on the belief, that prime lenses are always better, so I need clarication I've not tried the 16mm yet but I shall no doubt get it. I do a lot of street photography, and street photography in the rain would now be much easier. This is invasive weather protection, not pervasive, so you would still need to keep your camera in it's bag, whilst you scope out which way to point the camera, an imaginary composition The 35mm f2, with it's 50mm ff equivalent point of view, is great for a lot of street shots, but too narrow for covertly grabbed wide angle shots, which I can be done with the 14mm. Once again, I can foresee getting it purely for it's weather proofing. I've watched several of your lens reviews, and there seems to be a conflict between the quality primes, which get highly rated, and the top end zooms, which get highly rated. You need to resolve this conflict. You can't have it both ways Am I better off by buying these 5 primes, or these 2 zooms, which cover the entire focal length I'm ever going to need? If I buy two of Fuji's top end zooms, I'll save money over buying all the primes covered by the zooms. Is that what you're advocating?
+john williams 16mm is the best lens Fuji has. THere is no conflict at all. you said ---"quality primes, which get highly rated, and the top end zooms, which get highly rated"........
One more question: I know the purpose for those two lenses is quite different, but still, which one would you recommend as a first one to buy - 16mm or 10-24mm? Thanks...
+Theoria Apophasis yes, I keep looking at the flickr shots and it looks awesome. I would think that the ABR800 look plus a commercial drone license could be a good starting point to make some rubles. Been playing with the speedlight every night too. Many thanks to you!
Hair angry man i purchased the 16mm yesterday for my xt20 (poor man's xt2) based on Your Words but i sold my Fuji 10-24mm for a good price if im going super ultra wide i use my d810 also have 23mm f2 and 55-200mm fujion and a voigtlander 50mm 1.1 nokton and zeiss 35mm f2 and the old zeiss 100mm non cpu and samyang 8mm fisheye v2
fuck... I think it's depth rendition is as good as the best zeiss and leica lenses... www.flickr.com/photos/136922645@N05/23022933049/in/pool-2692674@N21/ I really love Fuji for their lenses and for X-T10 and X-T1. All their other cameras look like crap :p
Hi I just got this lens and I'm getting some weird glares on some of my shots... is this normal wih wide angle lenses? Here's my post where I show some of the shots that I took tonight. It only seems to happen when it's an led light www.dpreview.com/forums/post/60264848 thanks ai hope you can help me figure this out.
Two years later this man is still murdering people's wallets. I am about to purchase it and I will feel it for a long time, oh well, I blame HIM.
He murdered mine today :..... (
Mine got murdered this week with both this lens and the X-H1! Absolute murder!!!
i bought my 16mm f1.4 because of your reviews, and its really divine! theres nothing not to love about this lens, you are much helpful, thank you.
hell yes it is !!!!!!! its epic isnt it !!!!!!! Yeahhhh, i (really do) like to make people happy.
Especially remarkable is its rendition of colour - something that museum work especially underscores.
this made me finally decide for the Fuji system over Sony. thanks a lot man. keep on with your work.
If you take a close up example someone portrait does it make the head a funny shape or is it normal? Thanks
Totally agree, an incredible lens - Fuji's best. Paired with the 35 f2, now that's a superb setup.
My new 16mm 1.4 should be here no later than Saturday. I cant wait. I am really loving my XT3. Another big plus is being able to build up my lens line up a lot easier and quicker than with my 5d4 because of the cost factor.
Ken is this Fuji 16mm f/1.4 good combination for video on the XH-1?
This is my all time favorite prime lens because of its close focusing abilities!
It's secret
And your review on it gave me the boost that I needed .. Thanks from Norway
+M77BOOTS loving it :)

18mm is fujis worst lens........16mm is their BEST
Need help in deciding on buying the 16mm 1.4 or the 16-55mm 2.8. I DO HAVE A BUDGET....HELP
If you could only have one, would it be the 16 prime for the 1.4 or the 10-24 for its versatility?I respect your views on this.
when I rotate the focus ring in manual mode i hear a lot the motors, is that normal?
are you sure the camera body is also in MANUAL mode? which lens?
Theoria Apophasis i just have 2 fuji lens, 16mm and 50mm, on the 16 is more noticeable. I'm new to the fuji system, I have panasonic camera and lenses and they are way quiet, Its like always loved fuji cameras for the film experience till you grab one ;) if in autofocus mode is noisy I dont care, but in manual mode?? I actually value more panasonic system now, you have a great manual focus experience, it works amazing! (even though they dont have hard stops)
just the last 4 pictures are from the fuji all the rest are from panasonic... www.flickr.com/photos/pedrowilde
When I get home I will record video while manual focusing to show you
Hi im planning to get a 16mm f1.4 but i also have a tokina 11-16 f2.8 ver 2 for nikon
do you think i should still the 16mm f1.4, do you think that lens is better than the tokina?
Hi Ken, after 2 year using the fuji 16 1.4, i just notice the front or the second front element show milky haze when i point the flash light through inside, i just notice when using flash light. Is it the glue separation between 2 element ? Btw, the image output look normal.
Do you have any experience with this, pls answer. Thank you.
Thank you for a great review! Buying this lens today for my X-T3
just bought this lens today for my X-T1... its amazing, fits perfectly with my other lenses :)
Love your work by the way.
nikkor 12-24, not that chinese 10-24 :/
Do you think this lens with the 35mm f2 wr is ideal for street/travel in terms of primes? [if you could only have two primes]
+pat dinco sure as hell yes, yup.
What happens when you take two very strong magnets and force them together with a press and keep them there,, if you ran a bunch of tests and and took different measurements do you think every thing would come out normal?
Can you use this as a portrait lens?
For close-up, how does the XF16mm hold up to Carl Zeiss 100mm Makro-Planar ZF2?
If you would need to choose one ultra wide lens would it be this or 10-24?
the 16mm is so good it shouldnt exist, also you can get realllllly close with it for As-Macro pics
i own both, but the 16mm is pure sex and sugar :)
Flange distance is too short on Fuji, you can't adapt it properly. If adapters are made, they will have corrective optics which will degrade the IQ.
Omg just got one of these. The bokeh is divine!! Any wide angle composition tips for portraits?
+Greg Profitt wide comp tips, i have 2 vids like that already somewhere :)
+Theoria Apophasis I
I need a lens to shoot my friends band in typical dark New York clubs.
Fantastic review. I’m planning to buy one in couple of days. Thanks man!
+James Luidl this was a real shocker
I have my x100s and love it except for not being able to change lens. I ma looking hard at the XT1 and maybe waiting a few months for new version XT2 but I wonder what your view is for switching to the full frame Sony ? I like low light photography and Bokeh, I am thinking about the sony but I had an a6000 and sold it I like my x100s better. Thanks for your videos. William
Wow! This is obviously a super awesome lens. Could you take another look at the 90mm? Any plans to retest that one?
+Christopher Frith ive examined it TWICE now, hated it (well not hate.......)
+Theoria Apophasis well darn. That just busted my kit bubble!!!!
well use what makes U happy :)
Nice review - how will you compare it with the 24mm 1.4 NIkon?
Just picked up one of these. I'm not much of a prime shooter, but I just couldn't ignore the recommendations, plus I'm looking forward to using it in low light and as a pseudo macro lens.
If only I had this last night..I was shooting a band in very small bar packed, with 90% of light coming from Christmas decoration..
+roki977 BOKEH TIME !!
Saved my evening last night, bokeh. Everybody likes to see nice head shots or details. Looking forward to new videos..
Ken, what about the zeiss touit for fuji. Have you tried them? Do they have the same quality of the zeiss zf2 for nikon?
yes, perfect example where Zeiss screws up, theyre terrible lenses
Thank you for raising the red flag!!!! : -) helpful feedback!!!!!!
So if I was considering the 10-24 should I reconsider and look more into the 16?
+Brian Sarno both are a trade off from one another for obvious reasons.
Aloha angry photographer, i am primarily a nikon shooter and have the 24mm 1.4G and shot with it for a while now . i was wondering if you have any thoughts on this 24mm 1.4g vs 16mm 1.4 fuji wr .. i do use both nikon and fuji by the way thanks
i have both those theyre both awesome :) the 16mm is the super divine one however
the full frame experience is something but im assuming that the fuji 16mm lens is taylored towards higher megapixel sensors.. :) thanks buddy for reading this :)
sorry for my grammar and misspellings trying to correct mistakes but you tube wont let me :) hehhee
Dude - question - if anyone would know, it would be you.... I know they're different focal lengths but I'm looking for a wide for portraits and I was first thinking of trying the Zeiss Touit 12mm. But then I saw your reviews of the Fuji 16mm. Maybe I can overlook 4mm difference ;)
Have you used both? Can you tell me which is the better lens? Thanks.
Never seen you so excited or animated, must be a hell of a lens.
+John Valatos it blew my nuggets off :)
Already added to my B&H cart! Along with the square lens hood...
So on the fuji xt2 this is effectively a 24mm? On a voigtlander would it be 16mm f1.4
Manuel Odabashian yes
hey Bob question for ya. I have a fuji xt1 and a Nikon d610 I have the 16 1.4 for the fuji and was thinking of selling/trading it for the Nikon 20mm 1.8 what's your thoughts on the subject I value your opinion thanks
when will you review the Fuji 14.5-45mm T2.0 Premier PL Zoom Lens?
when will you send me yours? heheheh
After all these years, I got it. And you are right. It is indeed the greatest.
Wow angry one, you need to edit some of these video's. Keep them up, I've bought a bunch of stuff from your video's......love you buddy.
I want to buy this lens. I am very impressed about it after your video.
SO glad you tested this lens out! I've heard many great things about it, but appreciate your opinion on the lens. Question, have you tested out the 90mm lens yet, or are you planning on it if you haven't yet?
+Benjamin Wells tested them ALL now.
90mm was no impressive lens, good, not great
the 16mm far beyond great
Difficult question alert ... Which one would you use on your XT1 : 16mm or Nikkor 20mm f1.8 ? :)
+Raymond Sigarlaki easy, 16mm fuji is EPIC TITS, its from god its so great
Oh really? it must be so good then since your review of Nikkor is also very very good. Haha ... thanks. Btw i'm going to get Tokina 100mm for my XT1 based on your suggestion. Still waiting for my Metabones adapter to come though ... anyway thanks for making all the informative and objective videos, how i wish there were more "angry photographers' on youtube ... :)
metabones let you use tons of cheap OLD nikon glass too.....another great thing .
more insane than angry :P Hahahha
"Insane photographer" that you can trust to make sane decisions in the insane world of lenses... hey i like that ;)
They know bloody well how to drain your wallet, those nifty little Fuji buggers. First you pick up one of those intriguing little cameras and think "not too bad for the price, indeed." Then you get a lens, and then a vertical grip and an other lens, and yet another one... And in no time you got yourselve a whole new System, even though you just thought "I will not spend £700.-- on Fuji glass, even if hit on the head hard," ey mate? ;-) Same here, but the worst part of it is, more often than not I leave my old treasures at home in favour of the toy.
v8guggi same I started saying I’ll limit myself to 800 euro; and ended up with almost 2K; but at least I got some good stuff 😭😑
Did you review the XF 90mm? I have read good things about it.
+Lysander Spooner ive tested ALL the fuji lenses now, the 90 doesnt suck, but its not far from it
nope on that lens.
OK, I'll continue to use my Nikkor 105mm F/2.5 for that FL with an adapter.
Here is Scott Bourne's from weshootfuji.com review of the XF 90mm, he thinks it is pretty damn good: weshootfuji.com/2015/09/25/resistance-is-futile-my-purchase-mini-review-of-the-fujifilm-xf-90mm-f2-telephoto-lens/
the 90mm isnt a DUD, but i was far from impressed, i would not buy it even if it was HALF OFF.
+Theoria Apophasis the 90mm is probably Fujis best lens. Optics are phenomenal. It's sharp wide open all across the frame (but sharpness is not everything), there are little to no aberrations (nearly apochromatic, no coma, no distortion, no spherical aberrations,...)
Microcontrast and bokeh are outstanding too.
+tomxaak so what camera (fuji) do you have?
aperture ring IS loose, youre right
ohhhhh, i use metal vented lens hoods. theyre only $8
+Theoria Apophasis Fuji XPRO1 (otherwise 5d mk iii user)..
can't wait to see the new xpro2. Xpro1 is a sweet camera, I love it, but the AF speed is killing me.
Metal vented lens hoods - did you find one for 16mm? All I found is this:
www.afshoot.com/shop/product/metal-wide-lens-hood-for-lens-with-67mm-filter-thread/
looks perhaps too wide :)
tnx in advance.
theyre all over ebay CHEAP
search VENTED LENS HOOD 67MM
Wouldn’t the world be boring if we all agreed though :)
well ok heheheheh
lol, ok so I do own the 18mm for the one specific use case that it works well for - environmental portraits in spaces too tight for a 23mm.
True😂
do you think It could be the best travel lens? Nature, landscape and street life?
+procekim what lens?
Theoria Apophasis Fuji 16mm 1.4
+procekim I was looking for the Samyang 12mm for landscapes but maybe the 16mm is for street
me just ordered the 16/1.4 finally!
woooooot woot :P
I'm impatiently waiting for this bitch now. I have the XT-1 and figure this should marry up lovely. Good to see it impresses you because I take what you say to heart when it comes to gear. cheers.
another Fuji XT1 video uploading now :)
+charlatan19 the dist. is nill. great. ........ award for the lens of the year, answer might be BOTH of those.
I left off the Distagon 35mm because I thought it was out before 2015; I know you love it. Barrel distortion on the Fuji 16mm must not be too bad since I didn't hear you mention it .
its next to nill. i had to get it
even on sale it costs a fortune 800$
my 16mm just arrived and it's godly! looool
welllll hellllz yeah !
You made me break every rule I followed from the book rich dad poor dad deym. I’m just now waiting for the vintage mf lenses I bought to arrive haha again, all from your recommendations! You both make people happy and broke(jk) hahahaha thanks man!
There is a super cool square lens hood for the 16mm as well. Really great lens.
This or 10-24?
+Greg Profitt 10 24 is infinately more useful for more things of course, but the 16mm is fujis BEST lens, ive NOW tested ALL their lenses.
Can I cover these genders with these 2 lenses?
get the 23mm f2 instead
Instead of the 35mm f2 or as a happy medium for both?
Ken, I just got a xt2 kit, coming from a d800. Thinking about getting a wide angle. Should I get the 16mm or 10-24mm and why?
I've based my collection of lenses on the belief, that prime lenses are always better, so I need clarication
I've not tried the 16mm yet but I shall no doubt get it. I do a lot of street photography, and street photography in the rain would now be much easier. This is invasive weather protection, not pervasive, so you would still need to keep your camera in it's bag, whilst you scope out which way to point the camera, an imaginary composition
The 35mm f2, with it's 50mm ff equivalent point of view, is great for a lot of street shots, but too narrow for covertly grabbed wide angle shots, which I can be done with the 14mm.
Once again, I can foresee getting it purely for it's weather proofing.
I've watched several of your lens reviews, and there seems to be a conflict between the quality primes, which get highly rated, and the top end zooms, which get highly rated.
You need to resolve this conflict. You can't have it both ways
Am I better off by buying these 5 primes, or these 2 zooms, which cover the entire focal length I'm ever going to need?
If I buy two of Fuji's top end zooms, I'll save money over buying all the primes covered by the zooms. Is that what you're advocating?
+john williams 16mm is the best lens Fuji has. THere is no conflict at all. you said ---"quality primes, which get highly rated, and the top end zooms, which get highly rated"........
Great lens..fantastic review thanks
Excellent review good sir. Thanks to you I will be buying this bad boy.
90 mm not recommended ?
+Tomislav Miletić i hated it honestly, not impressive or stand-out-ish at all.
+Theoria Apophasis OK. That leaves me with 56 mm which I wanted to buy anyway. And 16 mm of course :-)
the 16mm is unbelievable
One more question: I know the purpose for those two lenses is quite different, but still, which one would you recommend as a first one to buy - 16mm or 10-24mm? Thanks...
10 24, wide zoom is the 2nd most useful lens for most people.
been watching some vids on this channel .. if this dude likes it means it cannot be shite ...
but is it needed for everyone? I mean even they can effort?
bought it and sold it
dang man, now this lens and thinking about that BR800 and bought a drone, im going to have to mortgage my kids!
+corteman ABR800 pays for itself overnight, guaranteed
+Theoria Apophasis yes, I keep looking at the flickr shots and it looks awesome. I would think that the ABR800 look plus a commercial drone license could be a good starting point to make some rubles. Been playing with the speedlight every night too. Many thanks to you!
anything to help man !
Daym indeed god glass :D
fuck... I think it's depth rendition is as good as the best zeiss and leica lenses...
www.flickr.com/photos/136922645@N05/23022933049/in/pool-2692674@N21/
I really love Fuji for their lenses and for X-T10 and X-T1.
720p and not good audio, yet I'm sure he's got cameras laying around that'll do 1080p @ 60p, or even 4k
Then Fuji produces the 50-140mm F2.8 with crappy Bokeh - so bad not usable for weddings
nahh not true
show me your pics with that lens with nice Bokeh - who do not wedding photographers use it ? Have you read what others have commented on it ?
What an awful review ... Lot of animal voices
+Mohamed Dhaif glad u liked it
