What’s “in the walls” were probably hidden cameras. They weren’t being stalked by someone outside. They were being watched from within the house. Hence why the person always seemed to have information that could only be obtained via extremely close proximity

That's certainly a possibility, though you'd think at least a couple of them would get discovered (or painted over and made useless), what with all the renovations the family did.
Then again, if everything added up, the culprit would have been caught by now, and it wouldn't be an open-ended mystery.

Where's that private investigator/detective who solved the case of the dead man in the hotel room based on his cigarette being in the wrong hand, the A/C issue and toothpaste filling a hole in the wall? He'd have figured out who The Watcher was in 5 minutes! I also agree with a ton of people who said to search the walls, and if you didn't want to burn the house down then through a few smoke bombs or something in there.

    • @sciencenotsrigma

Did they even have cameras that worked like that, then? I’m not sure. In the 1980s, they had to hide a camera the size of a Kleenex box amongst potted plants, or hide them behind other objects. I remember seeing a true crime show, where they showed the process. If someone went nosing around, they could easily find the camera. In the late 80s, my mom and grandma were all excited about the fact that you could set a VCR to record at a certain time of day. I wonder when people could first buy cameras that could record automatically, on a timer or motion detector. When I was a kid, I told my mom I wanted a TV I could bring places with me, and not miss my favorite shows. I was in a lot of activities, and liked to explore the woods with friends. My mom said she didn’t think that could ever happen. Now, we all have a TV we can put in our pocket and stream shows. 😂

With ongoing renovations, an electrical mishap would not be difficult to imagine, and if done correctly, would be undetectable. Insurance would ease the financial burden. The Watcher, even were he/she to know it was arson, would be hard-pressed to prove anything without outing their own identity.
Even if you bulldozed the place outright, the land is still yours. Rebuilding might have made more sense over the $400k loss. And lastly, after installing all the cameras and while doing renovations, if you had it in you, you could always have a safe room built, beef up the security and arm yourself to a high degree. Hang a sign on the front door that says, “Take your best shot bitch!”, and hunker down. I know, I know, kids and all, but it’s possible. Chances are pretty good it was the equivalent of a troll, with little or no power to actually act on their threats.
I have a couple additional questions : did he have the house scanned for listening devices, etc. and who ended up purchasing at the cut rate, and anyone after them - including anyone else that may have eventually profited from the fiasco.

This woman named Kathy Rowe was outbid on her dream home in San Diego in 2011 and tormented this young couple who bought the house. She was relentless. She relisted their house online which sent prospective buyers to their door, $1,000 worth of bills for adult diapers and magazine subscriptions they never ordered and ran an ad for a party sending people to their house. It was mentioned by Mr Ballen and I think also in the Netflix series a key detail that many people probably didn't catch. And that was the fact that the watcher said the house had been in their family for years and the grandfather and father watched the house over the years.
Well, because I worked in title insurance before, they should've done a title search on the property going back several decades and that possibly could've helped to find out who was the watcher. That title search would've revealed who owned the property over the years and possibly since it was built.

Being the arrogant fuck I am I'd be like "okay, I'm going to figure out whatever this bullshit is so good luck trying to get past me when all I've been passionate about my ENTIRE life has been figuring shit out." And honestly I'd simply figure it out, that's just what I do. They have literally zero chance once I've locked onto them. Once you know about cognitive bias, ego (seemingly ironic here), VERY irregular environmental possibilities, and all of the other self-perpetuating thought-loops that even the most rigorous scientists fall victim to, you can simply get closer and closer to the truth until you find it.

The watcher’s tendency to conflate herself with the house itself and the references to “what’s in the walls” suggests someone living in the walls or living in them vicariously in them via cameras. And yes, former owners and their relatives would be the place to start… “my grandfather … and my father… and now I…” Fumigating the house is a great idea!

I think before you hire a private detective, you should hire a mystery writer. They have Machiavellian minds that can imagine any scenario. In my case, (I like writing, but not mystery), I advocate a history of all the owners of that house, and if it was ever "lost" to debt, death, or whatever. And he would do the same with all the neighbors on the block. It is impossible that they did not know anything... or at least that they did not hear the rumors of those letters. If only the former owners received it... hmm, I'd highly doubt them.

I just watched The Watcher on Netflix so naturally I had to see if Mr Ballen had covered this dark and mysterious event in story format yet. I was not disappointed. But now I cant stop thinking about WHY has the stalker not been caught yet? Couldn't they just put a game cam inside of the mailbox to record who is putting mail in their mailbox? There was no return address or stamp on the enveloped so it couldn't have gone through the postal service. Someone is physically delivering those letters. With all of the cameras that were put on the house I'm just surprised that no one thought to monitor the mail box. Unless I'm mistaken!

My gut feeling is that it has to be one of the previous owners. They had access to the house so could bug it fairly easily while they were living there. The reasoning I would guess is financial, they sell the house, tank the value and then someone they know buys it back at a later date and they split the profits. Just guess work but that was my feeling as I was listening to the story.

    • @robinmcara793
      @robinmcara793 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

they sold the house and already had the money, why would you then tank the value on purpose? There is absolutely no guarantee it would work. It has far too much room to backfire. So you split the profits, then what? Your still down as it was 100% your house in the 1st place. You may as well just give away half your house to a friend and hope that your plan works. On a 1.3 million dollar house. Doubt it. Also, the previous owners would be under the most scrutiny by the cops.

Do you not think if it was that easy everyone of us would live in mansions? They check these things you know. I'm a landlord. I understand how it works. This family made a huge loss on a house they bought up front. If you have that kind of money you don't need to come up with scams. Why go to all the extra effort on something that is a total gamble. I get where your coming from but I respectfully disagree. If you have a million to buy the house in the 1st place. You could then borrow money to the value of the house. I don't think that was the case here. This is a very high end neighbourhood. There's simply to much risk involved in that kind of plan. What if your partner in crime is beaten by a higher offer? I was being stalked when I was 15. I worked at McDonald's, baby sat on weekend nights and at the flea market with my mom on Saturdays and Sundays. I helped my mom deliver Avon to her customers and worked off and on doing inventory at her boutique/store. I ran track in school. I was in choir. I was really, really busy. I was able to pay to have my own phone in my room, with my own number, which was privately listed, and not many people had the number. So, I started getting these calls from a young man late at night. He would ask me questions to see if I could guess who he was. He acted like it was a game of sorts. I thought it was a joke that one of my friends had given him my number and he was just messing with me. After a couple of times, I'd told him that I want to know where he got my number. He said " I know everything about you". Well.. really.. THAT was unnerving. I asked him what he meant by that. He told me what I'd worn today, where I was, who I'd seen and how I got back and forth from there. Okay.. he might have seen me. He went on to tell me that he thought I was really pretty and that I should get to know HIM better, because he was trying to get to know me. I asked him for his name. He hung up. So, I decided that was enough. I asked my mom to take me to the phone store to get my phone number changed (80's. No internet. No cell phones.) So, I got my phone number changed and gave it to about four people. McDonald's had it. My mom had it. The people I babysat for on Saturdays had it. My closest best friends had it. My father, who lived in another state, didn't even have it. Hell, I don't even think my stepfather had it. lol Anyway, it was nice and quiet for about 3 days. My mom started getting calls on her store phone and on our main home phone. I didn't ever answer the home phone. It wasn't for me, and mom had an answering machine. She'd always told me that I shouldn't worry about it. The "guy" called my mom's house number, asking for me. He called my mom's store asking for me. I had told my mom that if this guy calls, tell him that I am not here and that I don't take calls on her phone; it's a business phone at our home. The calls stopped for a couple of more days. Then he ramped up, calling over and over.. I want to talk to her. I have to tell her something. It's important.. I told my mom not to give him my new number. I quit working at McDonald's. I changed my schedule up a little bit on where I went and if I went to the flea market again.. I still babysat, but asked the parents of the little boy (he was almost 10, according to him, but really 8 1/2.. kids) if I could bring a girl friend with me babysitting because this weird guy has been following me and I am a little nervous about being alone. They agreed, knowing me well enough that I wouldn't be partying or anything. I was and am responsible. So, I am at the babysitting job with my friend, and introduce them to my friend and they said that their college aged son is home for the weekend, but he's out with friends. He may come home later and he can hang out with us if we want him to. I was sort of comforted by that. So, the night goes on and the child is in bed, asleep by some miracle. It's about 9:30 when the older son, the college freshman, comes home. He's wearing college baseball shirt and hat with jeans and sneakers. He comes in, looks at us and tips his hat, taking it off, tossing it on the couch next to me and he sat in the chair to my right. He hadn't said a word. I asked him "So, you're in college?" He just nodded did a mm hmm noise. I gathered he must be shy and it may be awkward having two strange high school girls in his house. The phone rang. Instinctively, I jumped up to get the phone. "I got it" he said. My heart leaped into my throat. He's the GUY. THIS is the guy who's been calling me, following me, harassing my mom". I turned toward my friend and said "that reminds me.. you need to call your mom at 10 to tell her if you're spending the night at my house or not". I gave her a "CALL YOUR MOM" wide eyed glare. when he hung up the phone, she called her mom. She told her mom that she was bored and to come get her. so, her mom was on the way. Thank GOD! The parents hadn't called and I couldn't for the life of me remember what restaurant they had gone to, and how was I going to explain this all to them, with their son the freaking stalker right there? So, when my friend's mom reached the house, we BOTH went outside to meet her. I told her that the older brother was here and I could actually leave now, too. I leaned into the car and whispered. please take me with you. I am scared of this guy. So, I left my purse. I left my jacket. I left the child with his brother. I went through the phone book at my house when I got home and found the restaurant that the parents had gone to. I called them at the restaurant and told them everything on the phone. All of it. They apologized repeatedly and told me that they'd call me when they got home and they'd bring my stuff to me. I told her not to. I said to bring it to my mom's store, which was closer, and the mom shopped there. She agreed. I got my stuff from my mom's store. About a month later, the guy called me at my new number, which he'd found at his parent's house. I had taken my mom's speaker phone from the store and put it in my room, just in case, because I was still pretty scared. I recorded the call. He'd threatened me. He told me that I could have had a great "thing" with him. He adored me, but now he saw who I really was and he hoped I'd "drop dead violently". So, I reported it to his parents, my parents and the police. My mom changed the locks on the house, added locks and I changed my number yet again, giving it only to my best friend. The next year, I was in the mall and I saw him with his mom and his younger brother. I walked over to the other side of the mall. His mom called out to me. She apologized again. She asked her son if he had anything to say. "nope" was his answer. That was the last time I ever saw or heard anything from him. I got lucky. But ever since, I have been afraid to give any information to people.

I feel like the watcher had some hidden access to their house. I bet it was the weird family next door.
The only way someone could pull this off without getting caught is if the watcher was able to leave the house without being seen - and since the family had many cameras installed, I think there was probably a hidden entry to the house. I’m going out on a huge limb here, but maybe there was an underground tunnel from the creepy neighbors house to a hidden area in this house.
OR the watcher had some sort of audio device installed inside the walls somewhere that allowed him/her to listen in - but even that would require the watcher to get inside the walls to plant the device, change batteries, etc.
    Idk this is interesting though!

I have heard this story a few times now and this story reminds me of the movie The Boy where he was thought to be dead, but he lived in the walls of the house. If The Watcher was a real person, I would imagine he or she may have been living in the walls too. Or a secret room that no one knows about. I don't understand how no one looked in the walls or at the blueprints for the house to see if there was a hidden room or enough space in the walls to be able to come and go as one pleases. Since the basement was mentioned, it's possible that this person was in the basement also.

    • @dragoness3606

    • @laceysparkman5105

Could a group of people have done it? I mean isn't that what makes the most sense. Even a group of teens? Hiding on roofs, getting camouflaged, being so close with information. Multiple people have a lower risk for getting pinned with a specific act if they aren't present for a single act. Plus, even with being recorded from inside the home whatever is in those walls would cost the livelihood of someone who needed to retrieve it or would be able to caught in one way or another. But the thing is, I don't think it was about the house at all. I think it would be about someone trying to see how long they would have before getting caught and how much of an effort they would get out of someone else trying to find them.

I believe that led to them stalking the new owners of the house, and using the knowledge the gained while they were already shopping for the house while it was on the market, and just threw that in the new owners face. I'd also look into all of the children of the previous owners, sometimes a parent will own it with adult children that have to divide it in the will or by law and they have to sell it, but one of the previous owners kids really wanted to keep it. Especially since the video says it was watched in previous decades by his or her father and grandfather.

Walking around naked 24/7 inside, and just randomly shooting holes in the walls. Night hunting the mailbox. It's just funny that all the notes showed up in the mailbox, but they couldn't figure out how to catch the person... How incompetent can they all be??

What if the “watcher” was just another buyer that didn’t get to buy the house so he wanted to send them all those letters so they can leave and he could move in 😂

There is actually a story like that. It was broadcast on one of those similar 20/20 programs. The person harassing the family was a woman, one who lost out of the bidding war for the home. But then, why didn't the "watcher" purchase the home at the discount? Or, who bought the home and are they a suspect?
