Grigory Sokolov - Chopin Nocturnes Op.48 (Sheet Music)

  • The first nocturne in C minor is probably the most heart-wrenching nocturne that Chopin had composed, demanding a sense of exact proportion. Without that, one would risk sounding either bland or exaggerated. Sokolov's intensely emotional account here is indeed quite close to how I would envision this piece to sound.
For the second nocturne, listen to how Sokolov "sung" the melody so lyrically and seamlessly.

He is playing with overflowing emotions thrown out. There is no fixed concept of playing well, so there is a lot of room forgrowth in his playing. That is why I never get tired of listening to him.

A much easier listen than Polorelich. However, it does not have the depth of Polorelich. Two different styles and I love them both!

Great pianist! Maybe the greatest of our time. But not the best performing of this piece. (No1). Luckily not boring and very interesting moments.

God this is bad... he can't play Chopin. His random speeding up and slowing down when not denoted is so wonky sounding. It sounds like a student that can't keep tempo without a metronome.
Hes trying to make it his own song but failing. Doesn't compare to Rubinstein's real version and how Chopin intended it.

Well, you do need to be a very good pianist to fully recognize how brilliant sokolov plays this, let me give you just one example, at 2:34, try to find score and play it, then you will know, if you still don’t know what underneath happened, you can simply not listen to him:)

His playing is extraordinary and reflects a really complex mind that breaks common conventions. I am pretty sure Chopin would be amused by these interpretations.

Actually his performance IS shocking!! With his reputation and caliber, I wonder what happen there… maybe he has a bad day…. You are right… his no1 especially really bad… I’ve just watched some Chopin competition, some young pianists really played so well.. without banging keyboard and bring out beautiful Lyricism elegantly.. Kim Hong gee’s performance…

I agree, last part is rushed and sounds like an etude. Also the octave parts has some mistakes. But its relieving that the masters do mistakes too
