  • It's important for us to take this land and make our forest more usable. Cutting trails through thick underbrush, woods, and saplings with the DR Field and Brush Mower while using the Shil Chainsaw for sawing down larger trees are key components for us to transform this land into The Lovely Place!

Anytime the chainsaw hits the ground (even for a second) the blade will become dull and make you work harder and add more wear and tear on your saw. I usually save all my really close stump cuts for last as I know I will need to sharpen the chain afterwards. When your sawdust becomes fine the chain is dull and needs a sharpen. Compare the wood chips to a new chain and you will see the difference.

Just got my DR delivered and will be heading up to my property in the Shenandoah Mountains this weekend. I’ve got five years of brush to chomp and can’t wait.

I enjoyed watching you clear those trails! I’m looking at getting a walk-behind brush mower to do the same on my property. We too have about 40 acres of forest; there are a bunch of existing trails that I’ve been reopening up with a Stihl Kombi with the power scythe and a string trimmer. That DR looks like it would make my life a whole lot easier!
I’ve got the same MS261 and have found it works great for clearing fallen trees and taking down the smaller ones. I like to cut at about waist height to drop it, then cut the stump down closer to the ground. In my (limited) experience, it feels safer in case I need to retreat while the tree falls, and these ol’ knees don’t move as quick as they used to to stand up in a hurry.
As for the chain tensioning, it looks to me like your chain is maybe a touch too tight based on what appears to be heat wear on the bar. When you are adjusting the tension, loosen the capture nuts and lift the nose of the bar while tightening the adjustment screw. Then retighten the capture nuts while still holding the nose of the bar up. It didn’t look like you were doing that, but I could be wrong.
Finally, please make friends with your chain brake between cuts. I couldn’t tell for sure if you were using it or not, but I didn’t hear the click of setting it and releasing it. I’m not trying to be a safety Sally, but I’d hate to hear you have an incident, especially without chainsaw chaps. It’s a free country and you can wear ‘em or don’t wear ‘em, but they just might come in handy (or leggy?) one day. Know that I mention it out of concern, not in a judgemental way.
Great channel that I’ve just found, BTW! I’ve subscribed and look forward to seeing more content as you make your property the way you want. 😎

Hey James, Thanks so much for all of your great advice. I will absolutely take everything you said and put it to good use. It's much appreciated! If it's not too much trouble, please explain more about what you mean or how to best use the chainsaw break. I think you are recommending that in between cuts I should click the break so I will not accidentally engage the trigger and chain? Makes complete sense to me. Shows how little I know, LOL. Thanks!!! I certainly need to stay safe, no one else is going to do all this work for me if I get laid up.
As for the DR, its sweet man, I really do love it. unless you have a skid steer with a big cutter of forestry mulcher on the front, I feel like it's a must. I have been using the fool out of it!
Thanks for subscribing by the way, that is cool and means a lot. Maybe one day we will look back and say you were one of the originals out of the millions. Haha, I can only hope and ream, right. Take care and keep up the good work at your place. Stay in touch.

@@TheLovelyPlace I'm glad you have taken my suggestion in the spirit intended and I appreciate you accepting it graciously.
With respect to my suggestion to use the chain brake, it's not too much trouble at all! I was taught by someone with many years in the woods to engage the brake whenever you don't have both hands on the chainsaw. Just wait for the chain to stop before engaging the brake or you'll prematurely wear out the clutch. When disengaging, keep your thumb hooked on the top handle and reach forward with your fingers to release the brake.
Yes, it might seem like overkill to some, but it only takes a split-second touch for a potentially life-changing accident to occur. After using it a few times it becomes second nature and you don't even think about it anymore.
I'd love a skid steer one day, but it is not in the cards at the moment! A DR such as yours looks to be just the ticket to get things done faster and more efficiently than I have been. I'm going to try and rent a similar walk-behind brush mower first and see if it would meet my needs. I suspect it will!
And you never know! Keep putting out great content, be your true self and stick with it. Even if at times you might feel that your channel is not growing as fast as you'd like, I'm sure one day your channel will blow up! You seem like a humble, likeable guy and that goes a long way. Remember views and subscriber growth is exponential. I've recently found older channels that are great, but they don't put out any new content for whatever reason, which is a shame.
I admire people such as yourself who are willing to share their lives on YT for our education and entertainment. There is something satisfying watching other people do the work I should be doing (LOL), and it inspires me to get outside and get stuff done.
I look forward to a shout-out as an early subscriber still watching when you hit 1,000,000! 😎

I have some property that im looking to have mulched for opening the canopy for wildlife. Very expensive. And there is a section they can't get to. I've been thinking of getting a DR. any midel recommendations as well as pros and cons would be appreciated. We are supposed to remove everything under 4 inches, and i know the DR is only rated to 3 inches, so i may have to chainsaw some. It's a very hilly area. How does it do on hills? 11 acres that is to be mulched had an estimare of 1800 per day for 3-5 days. Thats a lot. The area i may use the DR on is probably 5-10 acres.

I hear ya. That is a lot but it does take a lot of time with the DR. I think you have to ask yourself what do you have more of time or money.. As for hills, the DR walk behind is awesome. It is the operator that slows it down lol. It will wear you out. But with all that said, I LOVE it! So glad I have it. They have a good warranty so not many cons. No doubt some things could be built stronger but for the mo ey, it’s a good investment for the right person. There is no thirst all wrong with hiring a pro with better equipment. I am probably going to be doing that soon for other projects. Stay tuned and thanks for watching.
