That roll mistake actually makes me think an interesting cantrip or level one spell could just be the -/+1 bonus. Letting you tweak a roll in one direction or the other if it seems like you'll avoid disaster.
That sandwich looked like it had a lot of... punch(?) to it. Yeah, I bet that was a tough one. Not bad, obviously with the 6+ score but... a rough ride.

Maybe to make it more balanced at cantrip leven you borrow the adjustment from the next roll, if you subtract one you add to the next and vice versa
