My father was with the Royal Canadian Air Force at #53 OTU April and May 1942. I have his letters and it appears he started writing letters from Rhoose as of May 21st so there was no mention of Donald Carruthers crash. I have a group photo of #53 Operational Training Unit however there is no date so I don't know if it was taken in April or May. It's hard to tell if Donald Carruthers was in that photo.
Hi Vicki, that's really interesting and I'd very much like to see the photo, if you have a digital image of it, please? You can email me on dilipsarkarmbe@yahoo.co.uk.
At the Garn Teg Primary school near Pontypool, they have a ceramic display in the foyer depicting scenes made by the children. It's a display commemorating the crash of a Wellington bomber which happened on the adjacent mountain. One of the air crews sister came along for the unveiling, and the children stood in a circle holding hands singing " We'll Meet Again". Emotional doesn't come close, bless em 😢🙏🕊️❤️
So, my grandad was fibbing to me when I asked him what the ' D. S. O.' stood for 🧐 He told me that it was presented if you lost a smaller mid section limb 😏😆👍
Excellent and very informative
