      The position is based on the sine wave (I'm not sure if I completely understood your question)

    Why apply sawtooth wave apply input..?
    Why could not apply sin wave...

      Sawtooth and triangular waves behave like "linear" signals, so the comparison will be also linear inbetween a time interval. Sinusoidal waveforms don't. You want to have an output which is proportional to the input. That's why you need this kind of signal.
