Will Kamala Harris replace President Biden? | The News Agents

  • There is a dizziness to American politics right now - Vice President Kamala Harris raised 49 million dollars in the first twelve hours following Joe Biden's announcement that he would exit the race.
    She spent ten hours hitting the phones to garner Democratic support and is insisting she must 'earn' the votes of the delegates. But is the race already sewn up? Or might other candidates throw their names in the mix? And how well do we really know the figure who could be America's first female president?
    We talk to Ambassador Tony Gardner - a man right at the centre of the Democrats presidential campaigns, and to our leading historian Simon Schama - about the legacy Biden will leave and what this moment means for America.

    So much of this episode is in the politics reportage bubble - the assumption that the public at large will sweat on the means by which Harris becomes the candidate is an example. This point well made by Simon Sharmer. I know this is a politics show but please, less of the assumption that what is important in your world is important in that of the man in the street. On things that might affect the man in the street, do you feel the overflow of images of Harris laughing and smiling will make a difference with voters?

    I hate to correct my historical hero Mr Sharma but he missed out US Grant. Grant had 2 terms and could have gone for a 3rd term had he wished as this was still allowed at that time (FDR nearly had 4). The Cabinet in fighting between Grant and Treasury Secretary Bristow forced Grant to retire at the end of his 2nd term and not run for a 3rd. Many Americans both North and South as well as Republicans wanted him to continue. The consequence led to a constitutional crisis in which Rutherford B Hayes agreeing to end reconstruction to take the Presidency from Democrat Tilden by the first time use of an Electoral Commission. It wasn't until 1951 and the 22nd Amendment that the law only allowed a president to run for 2 terms.

    Emily, she doesn't pronounce her name CAMELa, it's CARmela. I'm not sure why so many English presenters can't say it. Is it that large an intellectual leap to say someone's name as they say it? It is ignorant to keep mispronouncing a person's name, even as your colleague in front of you keeps pronouncing it correctly.

    • @kb2007xox
      @kb2007xox 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually Kamala pronounces her name as “Com-er-La”. Just saying. Check the person’s own pronunciation of their name before you criticise how others pronounce it.
