It's good to see you back with the Rev 2. Every time I look to buy another synth, I realize my Rev 2 is still the best choice. All the controls are at your finger tips and virtually no menu diving. With a good external Reverb it just sounds great! I still enjoy listening to the video you made with the Rev 2 and Blackhole Reverb.
Thanks :) yeah, I don’t mind the REV2… but I have a lot of stuff (and this was borrowed - I don’t own it). That said, I thought the REV2 had a great Interfaxe until I used the P12, which has an even better UI. You should try one if you can some day! The REV2 allows for basically mixing the waveforms together and doing PWM on them, which the P12 can’t do in the same way, so it is able to perform differently. And yes, eventide blackhole makes the REV2 shine!
I used to have a rev 2, which i sold for a prologue 16. I loved the prologue 16, but missed my rev 2 mostly because i REALLY missed having a 4 pole filter. Then i sold the prologue for a prophet 5 rev4 and have been ecstatically happy. I still want another rev 2 at some point because its one of the best analog synths out there. You really demonstrated that with this video, nice job! Anyone contemplating a hardware synth should not overlook the rev 2 because it has that sequential tone, and if you like that tone, nothing can replace that.
I played the Prophet 5 next to the rev2 and I thought they sounded completely different. It was really hard to get a similar tone from the REV2. It would be something if they made a REV3 using the chips they use in the prophet 5. That would be pretty sweet, but also used the OLED from the Prophet 12. That Synth would be gold.

I've had both. The Summit on paper might seem like the better choice given the number of "features", but you have to like the tone. The Summit is much darker than the Rev2 and can never be as bright even with the filter all the way open in 2-pole mode. In some ways, the Rev2 lends itself well to more expressive patches by putting things like velocity into the amp and filter clusters, but that can be done from the mod matrix on Summit. For me, whatever is not surfaced as a knob or fader, is not used as much, so I have to be really intentional about setting this up on the Summit. The Rev2 has a very buzzy bright sound that can be hard to get away from. not that it can't be done, but you're probably better off if you're working towards that sound. At the end of the day, they're both great. Feel-wise, the keybed on the Rev2 is slightly better, but the knobs on the Summit are much nicer (no wobble). The effects on the Summit, including distortion at various stages, are much better than the Rev2 if that's important. Setting up split or layered patches is much easier on the Rev2. I hardly access that functionality on the Summit because you almost have to be thinking in that mode from the beginning whereas with Rev2, it's much easier to add a split or layer after having started your patching.
@@christopherjanzen thanks for this info. It seems the Summit fits my needs more: I need something to fill the background, to smoothen the atmosphere, to polish the tracks as a whole. For the ‘front’ I have the Nordrack 2, the Bass Station 2 and the Blofeld.
I have never used the Summit - so I can't really offer any advice on the Summit personally. But I am not very fond of the REV2 by any means. If you haven't checked out my review on it (here: www.midera-artist.com/sequential-prophet-rev2/), maybe that's worth checking out? I maintain that the best synth out there is still the Access Virus TI. It is my favorite of all that I have used. It doesn't have the best UI, which to me goes to the Prophet 12, but it sounds so good and just seems limitless. Of course, I wouldn't buy a new, but I'd buy a used one for sure.
I think the summit would work for you based on that description. It does smooth voices very well although it can get dirty with all of the overdrive and distortion stages. It’s a tough call for sure, but if you’re happy with your main voices, the summit is very versatile and can fill in the background easily.
Very nice, picking these up! Every time I look at getting a new synth the rev2 comes close to why I like the other for the most part - I do wish they'd re-release the pro 12, or do a rev3 but have 2 vcos + 1 digital oscillator, and switchable curtis/prophet/oberheim filters though, that'd be a dream. (I guess that'd be more of a poly pro 3)
Thanks :) Switchable filter would be good - but if you could have it all in one instrument, you’d have a harder time justifying more synths!!! I actually don’t care for the REV2 at all myself, lol. I found the original P08 more to my liking. The REV2 and P12 share something very “tight” about them, that is hard for me to connect with. Never could tell what it was.
@@MIDERA I know what you mean, I had the x4 and the 08 - I found when copying over my old patches I had to add a bit of slop to them all to re-add some "spice" (for a lack of a better term.) and in a couple instances some drift from an un-used LFO. The x4 was my favorite sounding, shame the keybed was just awful though, if that had the same keybed as the rev2 and had 6 voices, probably wouldn't have ever moved it on
I felt pretty uninspired with my rev2, so I bought an OB-6. What an instantly inspiring synth. Anyways, I had plans to sell the rev2, but after playing next to the OB-6, it just does a completely different thing that I kind of appreciate now. Although, I may just end up selling both for an obx8 😂
I have a friend with an ob6 and an OBX8 and they seem unable to part with either. They seem different enough for them. I don’t remember why, but I could ask them what the ob6 does that makes them want to hold on to it. I actually didn’t like the OB6 when I played it… but I didn’t play it for long. The one I played seemed to wildly go out of tune.
Thing is, I bought it with the intention of selling the OB6 to fund it, but, your friend was right, I don’t want to part with it. 😭 What do I do? Start a GoFundMe? 🤣
I've never had a Take 5. I LOVE the Matriarch, so you won't get much sympathy from me if you decide to go for a T5. Why are you thinking of those two instead of just getting a REV2 that does in fact sound just like what you hear from this video?
i feel like the take-5 would be a better comparison. take-5 kills it by a long shot, i think. but if you need more voices, a 3rd envelope, and an additional layer, then you'll need the rev2/p8
I'd say it's sort of like the difference between looking at a photo of a sunrise, and experiencing a sunrise. Yes, your brain knows what it is and probably how it should feel and seem, but ultimately you know it's just a photo of the sunrise. The only way in which the REV2 is better is the fact that it has a lot more mod sources (which I don't think make up for anything here), has S&H LFO, has an arpeggiator, and octave transpose buttons. Apart from those features, the P5/10 is better in every single way. Sound, being the most important of those features.
@@MIDERA since a poly evolver is basically out for me, I had been looking at the Rev2. It certainly has versatility, even though this is not the first place I've seen it's sound criticized. At the same time I've been seeing a lot of Prophet 08s listed for super reasonable prices. Have you messed with those? Thoughts on their sound compared to a Rev2? I thought everything from the Evolver through the Rev2 was the same lineage, but I haven't got to sit in front of any of these. I will say the prospect of doing binaural pads with a Rev2 is enticing, as well as PW on all the waveforms ...but I want to make the most of my poly investment dollar, even character wise. Appreciate your feedback.

Hey - I thought I replied to everyone requesting patches. However I’ve found at least 6 people have asked for this and I sent them instructions but never got a follow up from them. Some emails just said “REV2 patch” and that was it. Could you try again and see? I received an email just today from the site so I’m fairly certain it’s working. I can see if I missed any emails too.

The Rev2 sounds lush and beautiful as it does in most videos. So much better sounding afaic than the dry, brittle one dimensional sounding Prophet 5 rev 4. Why mono? Why not update the vaunted P5 to stereo, Don’t get me wrong, I love almost all the DSI synths: the OBx8 may be the nicest sounding synth I’ve ever heard but the Prophet 5 leaves me cold
It’s all subjective, so while I respect your opinion, I have the complete opposite feeling about these synths. The Prophet 10 is about the least cold synth I’ve heard, while the P12 is among the driest and coldest sounding synths I’ve ever used. I’ve tried for a few years to like it, but I definitely find it to be one of the least inspiring synths I own. Although it does look very nice.

It's videos like this that make me doubt whether I should go for a Summit or a REV2
