@@jackiedelvalleIt sounds like some broken slovenian, with some heavy accent (@morbik1 said it well). Telling something about democracy and genocidal civilisation...
Good memories! We visited in 2018, rented an airplane and a glider and went flying around the Julian Alps, then enjoyed a tasting in a 400-year old wine cellar. Lovely city, lovely people! Thanks for the video!
I visited in March, Predjama Castle, Postojna Cave are well worth a visit too, Bled Castle is nice for great vista of Lake Bled Jackie Chan filmed part of Armour of God there, , he ended up in hospital when a stunt went wrong!
Different is good! Your videos are my travel breaks while companioning my 94 year old mom. When I first watched, I was working and making notes for coming over from Vermont, but God had other, more sacred plans for my retirement capabilities. Plus, so good to learn more about Heidi.
One important thing to point out for anybody trying to visit Slovenia is that is has a Low and High season for tourism. Meaning the streets wont be full like in the video during the Low season, aka the cold months. During hot summer days there will be huge crowds everywhere including lake Bled and Bohinj. If you really wabt to enjoy the scenery, arhitecture, nature I suggest come in the colder months.
There are so many beautiful places in Slovenia, lake Bohinj and the Savica waterfall, vintner gorge, and let’s not forget Planicà where ther they hold the world ski jumping championships every year If you love walking/hiking, cycling or even driving there are some amazing routes and places to see, well worth a visit, it’s a hidden gem Loved my time there 👍🏻
I agree I went there in 2022 and I would say the nature in Slovenia was million times better than its capital city, Ljubljana. Even a Slovene girl I met in Slovenia 🇸🇮 said that the capital city was not that much exciting.
Thanks for this wondeful Balkan treat, John! It's fascinating how much Slovenia's architecture reflects its geography as the crossroads of the Alps, Italy and Eastern Europe.
Beautifully done, especially when you consider that you didn't intend to post a video of this lovely old city. One can tell from the river trip, this looks a charming place to visit. Nice one John! 🌟👍
Sorry, but Slovenia(Yugoslavia at a time) was not behind the lron curtain. We were a founding member of the Non aligned movement and kept that posture untill the fall of communism. We could travel to the West,we were learning English at school, national TV was showing Hollywood movies and we had great r'n'r bands. And we had a great educational system that taught us about every damn country in the world. Their geographical location, economy, political system and alliances etc. And Slovenes never considered us Eastern Europe, we are not there geographically and even less we belong there politically or culturally. Sorry for this ranting, but l'm sick of this lron curtain nonsense. Nothing has really changed for me since the fall of communism, except for the borders to disappear, which by the way existed also between the western European countries, and the shops are full of crapy imported foods. Nothing else.
Easily Europe's most beautiful country and my god you have to go back and spend at least a week or more ... The Vintgar gorge near Bled is just paradise and a great hike by a river and through a gorge you would love.... Postojna caves are mind blowing but equally as beautiful are the less visited cave at Skocjan with fewer tourists and a bit more walking .. Think "Lord of the rings" for both... I still have a stamp in my passport from 1984 crossing the border from Italy at Postojna... Ah I loved borders and the fun of crossing them and getting stamps.. Hire a car and really see the beauty or be braver and drive down through Europe for the buzz.... Bohinj is peaceful and lovely... Do the cable car to mount Vogel , the views are .. Wow... Plum brandy and the local salty local soup with sausage and vegetables is needed to allay the effects of the plum brandy.... When you come down from the cable car a short walk takes you to amazing war graves from (I think) WW1..... The small 40k coastline has Portoroz which is a bit posh with no beach but easy access to the sea for a swim ... Posh hotels there ... Piran is very Venetian and lovely .. Koper is the main port and a bit industrial but .. Here is a tip for budget eating .. The "Spar" superstore has a restaurant / cafe where you can get a really good meal at a really good price... Pork in peppercorn sauce is good ... Avec chips. Drive to Kranjska Gora and take the road through the mountains passing by Oxygen blue rivers and beautiful forests with amazing mountain views accompanied by the sound of cow bells in the distance... Towards Bovec where purely by mistake (Stopping for a pee) I found bunkers , barbed wire and trenches from ww1 .... Go over the border to Trieste the centre of WW2 espionage and use the amazing tram system ... Best pizza there... You can cross into Croatia from Portoroz but to be honest ..... Stick with Slovenja as it is special...
Wow thanks for all those tips. We’ll definitely be returning to visit Idrija where Heidi’s Dad’s family were from and hope to see some of the places you mention.
@@JohnRogersWalks Just a heads up for you.. By all accounts an old train service has recently been reinstated and its an interesting one... From Lovely Trieste (Best coffee) and centre of ww1 and ww2 espionage ? Through Slovenia and on into Rijeka in Croatia.... Supposed to be pretty cheap and only a few hours long.. Summer months only for now but taking in three countries .. Bargain...
Funny thing about the petrol station.. It has been abandoned recently due to the owner Dušan Josip Smodej being suspected of various crimes towards many women. The sign used to say "Fotopub" but has been altered by the citizens in protest to his actions to say "Obup" meaning Despair.
From viewing your video, John, Ljubljana appears to be beautiful in the old parts but not so in the modern parts. Is that true? Me never having been there.
Maybe not, but communists managed to build tens of thousands of appartements for low price/rent and of better quality than nowadays and rebuilt the country after two devastating wars. Not everything was bad.
Interesting juxtaposition of architectures, given its place in geographic location and 20th century political history - Italian, Germanic, and communist brutalism.
That bloke is a homeless Greek guy, I talked to him once when I saw him doing this. He's a bit schizo, he claims Greece is a fascist country, and he is trying to obtain refugee status in Slovenia. It's quite hard to understand his ramblings though, as his Slovenian isn't particularly good.
How beautiful. Thank you, John. Say thanks to your wife for letting us tag along. I would love to see Lake Bled one day.
Wow my home town! Did not expect that.
Do you know what the guy was saying reading aloud?
@@jackiedelvalle No idea, that wasn't Slovenian. It sounded like a mix of Russian and Latin😁
Listen closely, it is slovenian but hes drunk and not even finishing some words. It's some political gibberish.

Wow the Ferant Garden building was fantastic. The brickwork looked like iron and rivets. So futuristic looking 👍🏻

Thank you so much - it was a special trip and really wanted to share some of it. Great to hear your Mom is still going strong at 94!!
at least that shouting chap wasn't shouting at you, john 😁 thanks for the lovely walkabout - and that hail! hope you had a sturdy umbrella! 😊
Fascinating architectural styles and Lake Bled and its hills is stunning. Thanks for share.
Fascinating older architecture in amongst the new. That ‘petrol’ station at 3.36 sort of resembles the underneath of an umbrella.
Beautiful and clean and not crammed. Gorgeous architectural shapes. Thanks for the montage.

Wonderful Thanks again John in Chicago

Thanks John. Beautifully shot
Montage it is and an somewhat impressionistic one at that. Lovely and seems like you had a great trip.
Wonderful,Sunday complete.
Interesting city, it looked like a cross between Italian towns and eastern block concrete. Thanks John
Beautiful video mate!
Many thanks

Nice one John! 🌟👍
Ljubljana was so chilled out when we were there that all you could hear was birdsong and Carpenters covers issuing from the coffee shops ;)
It’s such a mellow city
I'd recommend you return and visit more of the mountains - they are stunningly wild and beautiful!
Thanks for the video, John.
Incredible and fantastic! Super amazing places and wonderful presentation ! Thank you!
Glad you had a great trip.
A delightful vignette of Slovenia John. I love the petrol station. Looking forward to Thursday at Swedenborg House too.

Slovenia (as part of Yugoslavia) was never part of Soviet block and its borders were fully open, so, no, no behind iron curtain country
