      No doubt he was such a talent. One big problem that limited his carrier was lack of finishing skills. Did you check the number of off target shots from him? He was busy doing shows and dancing around with the ball even while the scoreline was 1:4 against Nigeria. That is not an efficient way to play football, that was the reason he never got all the attention from the world. Football is about efficiency and productive, that is what makes one a world best player, that's what every manager want. Check the history of football, you will find out that every striking midfielder that has ever won player of the year had special finishing skills and dangerous chance creating ability when it matters most and the don't dance around for nothing, those are the key things that every manager want to see. Check the likes of Pele, Figo, Messi etc and you discover the difference. Don't forget an African in the person of George W. and current President of Liberia has won the Balloon Door award, he was a striking midfielder like J.J but you need to see the quality of football he played and you will see the difference.
      I wish i was ever J.Js coach or manager, I would have helped him to point out the critical areas that matters he needed to have work critically on because he had enough skills.

    THIS match was the beginning of Nigerias downfall in football. Nigeria lost bitterly to Denmark since then Nigeria never recovered. Okocha was a freestyle talent who was using our serious matches to entertain people. no wonder he didn't play in any big club in the world.

    • @geobrume5416
      @geobrume5416 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He contributed is quota, he paid his dues for Nigeria. He was a committed player. That he is entertaining does not mean he was not instrumental to the success of the team. Watch his games from Tunisia 1994 till he retired after Egypt 2006 nations cup, he was a committed fellow.

      Some of you make some comments that I don't know exactly how to react to. If my memory is correct, the problem of the Nigerian football didn't start with this particular match. It was already filtering into the Nigerian media that the Nigerian football management had some serious internal issues, some of which was about all manner of corrupt practices, indiscipline and even nepotism etc. The problem within the NFA soon began having a serious negative impact on the Super Eagles that even preparing for this particular tournament was a bit of a strugle which in a way led to unexpected changing of coaches for one reason or the other and then the team was not well prepared, making them much dependent on their individual skills and their previous team experiences. Even the goalkeeper had a broken hand, I think, too much for such a tournament.
      Coming to Okocha, he wasn't entering the pitch to entertain. He was naturally entertaining because it happened that he could do basically anything which most players couldn't do just to get out of situations and these were not just to show off the way people often talk about. He just had a natural flair but when the team looses, there is always going to be somebody to blame. The easy scape goat becomes Okocha, while he was actually one of the most impactful players on the pitch. Okocha was one of the reasons Super Eagles reigned and when he disappeared they died off.
      This particular match was not Okocha's fault. It was a team problem; a team that already had serious problems behind the scenes. He was about the only one doing everything; distablizing the opponent's midfield, creating passes and chances that were often not utilized and then he had to begin shooting from all directions to save the team. It was almost like Okocha vs Denmark. Denmark wasn't even very strong; only that their strategy was very effective, very early 2 goals by surprise and then Nigeria was at a disadvantage and made more mistakes while trying to equalize; leaving more room for counter-attacks.
      Also, regarding Okocha not playing for big clubs, some of them tried getting him but it didn't work out. So let people stop these romours and assumptions. He was very unlucky at best becasue he was one of the best players on the planet and this is what top players and coaches thought about him; quite different from what ordinary football fans often say.

      Too much to deal with in this comment. Are you aware each team has a strategy as determined by the coach and not necessarily as you expect a player to play? Are you also aware that the way of approaching football changes roughly each decade?
      Are you also aware he is a midfielder and often plays much away from the goalpost and he only began doing all by himself when he saw the whole team was in total disarray and he then began shooting from a distance? Watch again and tell me how many passes he made and was wasted by the forward players whose main job is to score.
      The night before this match, the players threw discipline under the bus, some were sleeping with women and then went to the pitch without enough sleep. The entire team was in disarray. He was the only man doing everything, both his and other people's job, and some people still have the mouth to vomit rubbish.

He was very young and not regular then because we had the likes of Samson Siasia in the midfield, in a complete Super Eagles squad. But he was an important part of the team who sometimes starts. But even if you watch is tactical & mesmerizing display against an Italian side who had most of their players playing for the great Milan side who defeated Barcelona 4-0 to clinch the 1994 champions league, then you will know that he is a truly a magician on the field.
