"Minimalism is a tool, not the goal." Excellent distinction. Your body, your hair, your choice. Period. I love that you continue to share your life with us, despite the unsolicited opinions. Just keep shining your light, my friend. It is bright and needed. ❤
Girl you do you. No one has the right to judge others. I personally love your inspiration to be creative. I am not a minimalist nor do I want to be; however I do want to be an essentialist ❤️
So minimalism looks different for everybody… For instance, I have eight children and live on a mini farm. That’s gonna be a lot different than for somebody living in a studio apartment in New York City. It’s funny that there’s a whole crowd of people out there who have an exact definition of what minimalism is. Who gets to determine that? I like that you do what’s right for you, and you give your insight, and let us see how you do things, then we can decide if we think that’s a good way for us or not. I enjoy you and your channel and I’m glad that you’re not letting negative comments get you down. Blessings 😊
Rachael, nice talk. I've been a minimalist all my life being that my mind can't deal with much chaos. I used to lie on my bed and imagine that the ceiling was where I really lived. Such calm. Now my goal is still minimalist after dealing with much of my childhood trauma. It was interesting watching you undo your dreads and I really look forward to seeing you get the new ones. Cheers
I love all the reasons behind minimalism. Originally I just wanted to declutter because of the anxiety I was getting. The more I thought of decluttering I realized that it would lessen the time I spent cleaning, fixing and maintaining all that we have. I’m still on my minimalism journey as it takes time to declutter especially the longer you’ve lived in your home. With everything that leaves my home I feel a little less weighed down and it feels good.🥰
I love this episode! A perfect example of how minimalism is very specific to the person. You are a voice of wisdom for me, and I am grateful to you for sharing your life with me!
Thanks for all your comments today. I really appreciate your straightforward talk. You are always kind yet you are not a pushover. It is important to have boundaries and you have maintained them while welcoming us to come for the ride. As for Minimalism...I think of that as a shorthand term for prioritizing what is important in our lives and not letting social expectations or stuff get in the way. I really love how you've pared down to the things that are useful and meaningful to you and your family. Thank you for being a role model. Love your videos and I do find them nourishing! With love, Diane (Ottawa, Canada)
So fun to have hair options - looking forward to seeing your new ones. A very insightful video once again. You dispel all the judgments & criticism with grace and kindness. That’s a lesson in itself.
I love your dreads. I did the same several years ago. People love commenting on things that are not their business. But all they did is to empower me more knowing that I can do what ever I want with my body regardless of their unsolicited opinion. You do you. I love seeing you with dreads..First, you look good with them, they make you look younger, and beautiful.
I completely agree with everything you said! I love making junk journals and making monoprints, neither of which is a particularly minimalist hobby! What I do need is space in which to work, so that is what I am concentrating on achieving as I declutter. And... I think the dreads really suit your face shape and they look great on you. I look forward to seeing them being put in!
Sometimes I would collect things in my mind. I used to collect the places I gave the PPD in tattoos when I worked in prison. My favorite was smoke in an intricate Mayan tattoo. The most common was a skull. It was often times hard to find a space. We collect a lot of things in our minds many of them don't serve us. It plays out in our space. I see that in my own life big time. I have so much that I think is just my mothers own emotional trauma passed down to me.
❤Rachel - You are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing your minimalism journey, and all of the beautiful things that you have made space for because of that journey, with us. I am excited to see your new locks! I had my first set of braids installed (at 47 years old) the same week that you had your locks put in. Because I have created space in my life, I was open to the opportunity to try something new and I absolutely love my new style. Thank you for continuing to be you. You warm my heart and inspire me with each video. *big, big hugs*
I love the thought of being free from the worries of stuff. You go with the dreads. Hair is the one thing we can change! It’s fun! I grew my curly hair out and wear a high ponytail, I love it. You do you! Especially with your hair!
I can't wait to see your new hair! And I love how you explained that minimalism is not the goal itself, but the way to reach the goal of an easy to manage home. Hopefully people will identify their actual goal/s and have a different understanding of their minimalism choices.
I love the way you explain things. You give your viewpoint so clearly and gently. You stand up for yourself without an attitude, which is so refreshing. I also like that you are always busy doing something creative while you talk. Let the haters hate. We need you to be you!
TRUE WORDS all along 👍🙂 As I begun with this journey, my own journey I had not the goal to become a minimalist 😃 My goal is still to SIMPLIFY my daily life in my new season of life (62 and recovered from covid last year). Therefore I prefer the term "back to my essentials". But, yes, a friend of mine argued about my collection of porcelain coffee pots... 😉 That wouldn't be that minimal... I won't give them up ! They bring me JOY 😍 and now, in our decluttered, downsized home (I am married with Peter just now beginning going through HIS stuff and finding that be-freeing 😉) I SEE much better my coffee pots, they are more valued, they bring me MORE joy 😉 I enjoy my empty counters and free corners. That do NOT mean that we have (for example 😉) NO pictures on the wall but only what's really MEANINGFULL 😉 (2 in whole appartment). Reduce to essentials is not going in religion, living in a cave like a monk with a bowl of rice !? Not for us 😉 Now we feel physically AND mentally much better (AND... I have less to maintain, everything easier) so higher quality of life 😍 PS: your rasta hair was fancy, it is totally OK to try new things, other things, that's life: change, move 😍 Best greetings from North Germany 🙋🏼♀️🙋♂️
Yep, that is one of the problems with trying to use definitive words to describe a concept. The word "minimalism" carries with it many preconceptions for most people. Actually, words can be very limiting at times. Perhaps that's why the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words" rings so true.
I like your hair. Glad you're going to redo it because it makes you happy. People are so over opinionated on social media. How exactly does it affect someone where they need to leave a negative comment🤷♀️ I think it is a minimal hair style as is my pulled back ponytail or bun during the summer. I have more important things to do😊
Rachel you shouldn't take out your hair because of others opinions! You are gorgeous whatever way you style your hair and as a retired housebound person I delight in your channel because you are helping me learn new ways of looking at life and my home now I am older frail with mobility issues and unable to do all the dusting and other soul destroying stuff I did for years and years. My anxiety is under control thanks to you and I am able to see how I can still live in my own home if I adapt how I do things and create space for my own safety and wellbeing to get a look in. Thank you so much for what you are doing for me and others. I am recovering from critical illness and you have helped me reach a point where I feel positive about my own mental and physical health and my home and future again. Love vera in Northern Ireland
I appreciate how open you are to sharing your thoughts, motivation, and choices - it helps me to self-reflect and make positive changes. Thank you for all that you do! ❤
I have always felt like minimalism in some not loved areas of life gives me the time and ability to be a maximalist in the areas I do love. You summed it up perfectly. And I like the dreads.
Hi Rachel, when I first saw you in dreadlocks, I thought, WOW, you look amazing - few people can carry off dreadlocks. In fact, you look more radiant with each new video. Could it be that you are enjoying life? The life you have time for, because you de-cluttered what has been weighing you down? Maximum Joy is OK, is wonderful, is enviable and in my view the goal of minimalism. You are curating your life, like a museum curator selects the exhibits in a museum for the joy of those who come to see them. Maintain the joy, have fun with your hair (you really do look great in dreadlocks) and keep creating content. You inspire so many people, you show understanding because you leave judgement aside, the impressive thing you do is to help people realize their potential for their own personal growth. You truly inspire and I love your positive and supportive vibe. THANK YOU!
Love what you shared in this video. The primary benefit I desired from minimizing was the freedom to do things with others and engage in interests without all the clutter things hollering at me and preventing me from finding peace and happiness in life. Looking forward to your next hair video 🤩💟
Hi from The Netherlands. Your personal transformation over the past few years is incredible. You look peaceful, balanced and in harmony with yourself. That hair is stunning! Love your channel!
Finger pointers abound. I love your locks! They’re artsy and fun, and I bet collectively they’d take less time per month than PointingPatty’s stringy hair that must be washed, dried, curled, styled, and sprayed every other day at best.
I personally think the dreads really suit you, and work with your shaped face - bringing out your beauty. They also light up your skin and eyes. Truly, you look beautiful ❤ I wouldn’t listen to the nay sayers.
I enjoyed watching you put the dreads in, it was just as much fun seeing how to take them out. As minimalists, we can have the freedom of time and space to do and be whatever we want. I love living the minimalist lifestyle, I selected which hobbies were most important to me, and decluttered the rest. I created an inviting and efficient work space and never missed the things I let go. Minimalism requires maintenance, and the mindset to not back slide. Minimalism is different for everyone. Enjoy yours. Love your videos.
I really like that you mentioned quilters in the minimalism doesn't look the same for everyone examples. Since I started my decluttering journey I've been able to have the space and time to take up my hobby again. Thankyou very much for all your tips! Also you look great with dreadlocks, they make you look really young and happy. Don't worry about what other people think anyway, it's your hair, style it in a way that makes you happy
i have thin hair, but when i would braid it at night when it was still a little damp in the morning i would take it apart blow dry with a diffuser. and my hair look so full. I would not brush it. but used a hair pick. and i loved the look but now i am so much older and dont really care anymore. i just cut it a little shorter . chin level and its great for where i am in life now. what works for you now is what you can be content and happy with
I enjoy your channel very much! You are always so calming and helpful. I believe the title of your channel is perfect for what you do. I feel nourished, encouraged and inspired to let go of more excess when I hear and watch your videos! Thanks for sharing! Also, You rock the locks! Looking forward to seeing how the next ones turn out too!
I am always delighted that he is the twin of my younger brother from the 1950s and 60s. Then one day I realized I am so Naomi! Just part of the reason I feel so comfortable following your family. Thanks for all the comfort and inspiration.
I wish i had heard this message 30 (or more) years ago. I wouldn’t have so much crap to get rid of now! I did get rid of thousands of items this year, but I think it’s only about 25% of what needs to go. It’s a process much like peeling an onion for me. I have to do it in layers, paying attention to what I REALLY use and need, then decluttering those items that I don’t use, regardless of how “valuable” they are. If I don’t use them, they are of no value to me and I must send them on to someone else! Thank you for your words of wisdom and your experience with minimalism.
🌿 Your decluttering journey since 2008 is incredible! Over 10,000 items gone, inspiring us on the path to minimalism. 💚 #DeclutteringSuccess #MinimalismInspiration
I’m glad you’re going to have your hair done professionally. I remember that this was a trial to see if you really liked it. Personally, I think your hair has nothing to do with minimalism and you need to do what is right for you. Ignore the haters. And btw, I love the dreads!
Ooh I love it. For me it’s my funky punk rock hair colors. I’m waiting patiently for it all to turn grey so it can show up a lot more. Esp pastels and doing the mermaid look at times. Might try it myself but what do I tell the stylist or what kind of place do I go to get it? Just tell them to braid it w/extensions or that I want dreads? And now I’m def thinking crazy multi colored dreads. Lol.
How fun! Look up different terms - dreadlocks, locs, dreads and mirobraids on Instagram (most stylists post on IG) and search for you area to see who is there and what they do. Or ask your stylist who they recommend, maybe they will know someone. 😊 (Each stylist has their own preferences with what kind of extensions they work with)
@@Nourishingminimalism Lol. Thanks. Well I guess truth be told I got very excited about it. Then googled it and I guess I feel like maybe it’s over my head. Overwhelming. 😅😅 I think I could be happy just watching others do it. I think I need a lot more muscles before I try to take anything that big on. I did play around with braids during Covid when everyone was stuck at home. I really liked it but it wasn’t official or serious or anything. Just joked around like oh this feels so badass tho. I need more badass. 😅😅 Not neat or anything. Just kind of loosey goosey haphazard. And just my hair. Medium and not too long. Lol. I posted it on FB for a lark and they said I looked like some certain rapper. 😂😂 (But that also kind of secretly low key pleased me tho even tho I didn’t know who it was lol). But yah. I mean I like adventurous hair but usually it’s more work than I wanna do. Used to have full on crimson red and one shaved side with “stripes,” undercut Bob and such and I loved that also. (But also it was a lot of mess and work). So now I just go back and forth. I do it when I want to commit to the work and I drop it when I don’t want to commit. 😅😅 But my hair is so blah right now. It def needs some kind of zing. Lol. Just poking around I guess…searching for my next hair adventure. Lol. But I still know one day imma be that weird granny with full on pink hair. Ha ha.
If you'd titled this video with something like "Minimalists aren't allowed fancy hair. What?!" I'd have clicked on it instantly. WhenI read the title you have now, I thought, "Hm. I already know the answer to that question. I'll wait for her next video." I felt disappointed, and I worried you were running out of ideas for content. The only reason I ended up finally clicking on this video is because it's morning, and your calming voice is soothing before the day gets busy. It's because I like you personally, but It had nothing to do with the title. I would have missed out! Anyway, I thought you might appreciate some feedback. If this doesn't help, and you prefer the title as is, PLEASE ignore my feedback. You are amazing. Keep being you. I loved the content. And it was so fun to watch you take out your hair. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
I love the braids...I'm tempted to try it out myself. I have recently let me natural whites and greys come in. I think the braids would be so cool. Do they wreck your hair? Does it hurt to sleep on? I'm going to Jamaica in October, maybe I will get it done there.
Oh that would be so cool to have it done there! It never bothered me to sleep with it, some people wear a silk sleeping cap. And no, it doesn't ruin your hair, especially if you just have your own hair micro-braided. The wool dreads were a bit thick, so I did have some breakage at the base, I'm sure I could have avoided it if I wore the sleeping cap like my sister told me to. 🫣
I have long since stopped following people who base their entire identity off of being “a minimalist”. I, personally, don’t find them genuine - they seem lost. Content creators like yourself are inspiring! You are MOM, a WIFE, a child of God... and you utilize minimalism to maximize those roles. What an interesting woman! I was a minimalist until 5 years ago - I was 39 and pregnant with my second child. My husband and I sold our home and moved in with my widowed father (we own the home now). Our minimal home, that fit into a 900 square foot home, got lost in my parent’s home. My poor father! A lifetime of memories and hopes for retirement, gone with my mother. He is hesitant to let go. By this time we’ve owned the home for a couple of years, and we’ve made the executive decision that what he hasn’t touched in 30 years, he isn’t going to miss. We know what he values (books and tools, so we will move forward with respect), but he has so much clutter that he hasn’t been able to even use his tool bench in 25 years. It’s so hard. Your channel (a NORMAL mom) is so inspiring!
Every decision we make is open to public scrutiny these days. Not the same world at 20 years ago when we just did us. I keep my head buzzed and while I daily get told how beautiful I am and how 'they' wish they were that brave I'm aware I'm also judged. Oh well. 😊
Other people judging your every decision based on this one lifestyle-choice is just maddening. Btw I like your dreads. I think they are fun! One day I may be brave enough to try it. 😊
Thanks for sharing.😊Will your natural colour be visible when you get the locks put in ? Will they blend will your natural colour, or will you use the opportunity to add a different colour ? 😊 ( I'm letting my hair go grey , and was just curious about it )
Yes - it's going to be all my natural hair, I'm not adding any extension, so no color, though it would be fun! I want to embrace age as it changes me. 😊
How funny that anyone thinks they can tell anyone else how they should look or live or judge whether they are meeting specific qualifications. I can hardly wait to peel down my belongings to just the things I want and enjoy; yes, the things I ENJOY. How great will that be?!🎉
I was a on the fence when I saw your video getting dreadlocks, but I must admit they look good on you. You need to do what works for you. If dreadlocks make you happy then go with it. Just keep being you. 😊. My hair is poky straight that won’t even hold a perm. I learned to embrace the straightness and now have a chin length bob that works for me.
Isnt it great we dont all like the same things or look the same, wouldnt that be boring, i dont think i would like to deal with only people like me all the time😂
I don't think hair has anything to do with minimalism unless you have an overflowing amount of hair products that are cluttering your space. By the way, I am not a fan of your hairstyle, but who cares. My opinion, or anyone else other than your husband, doesn't matter and we don't have a say.
I would never want to be a minimalist because to me "minimalism" equals ugly homes, all white and gray, ugly art, uncomfortable furniture and pointless empty spaces. I do not associate with ugly houses and would not like to identify as an ugly house person/minimalist. I apply principles of minimalism, like constant decluttering.
I donated all of my nicknacks. It takes me 2 minutes to wipe down my surfaces. I enjoy doing it now. The prep took longer than the cleaning, so I would avoid doing it. 🥹🙂🙃🥰☺️ 🐾

Hi, thanks for the chat. Love that minimalism gives us the gift of time to be spent any way we like!❤❤

Good for you! I love how you explained that - you've created space in your life to be open to try new things. So much this! ❤️
Do what you want and enjoy!!! 😊😊😊😊😊
I love your hair and it makes you look 10 or 15 years younger. I choose very short hair because I can't stand to spend longer than 5 minutes on it.
I love the thought of being free from the worries of stuff. You go with the dreads. Hair is the one thing we can change! It’s fun! I grew my curly hair out and wear a high ponytail, I love it. You do you! Especially with your hair!

Looking forward to seeing how the next ones turn out too!
Thank you so much Karen! ❤️
My Dearest!Darling Rachel thanks aton for uploading a Wonderful video!Stay blessed
😘
Darling so nice of you!
You have so much wisdom and you always give me something to think about. Thank you, Rachel. ❤
Oh goodness, I LOVE your hair! I wear a headscarf most of the time so that keeps hair care fairly simple.
Have to say, my favorite part of your hair extension demo was Paul draping them over his head.
😂 he steals the show every time he makes an appearance! 🥰🥰
I am always delighted that he is the twin of my younger brother from the 1950s and 60s. Then one day I realized I am so Naomi! Just part of the reason I feel so comfortable following your family. Thanks for all the comfort and inspiration.
🥰 Ah that's great!
An easy home to take care of sounds wonderful! WhooHooo 🎉 😅👌
Oh good idea!!! Thank you ❤️❤️
I just changed the title. 😁 I struggle with titles, so am glad to hear feedback.
I like that you are being yourself
For what its worth, I think your dreads are cool😄
looking forward to your new locks!
Your hair doesn"t define you. Rachel i watch you because you are an inspiration to me. You share who you are with all of us. Keep being you❤
🥰 Thank you
Will you tell us about your arm tattoo?
Love the hair!
Every decision we make is open to public scrutiny these days. Not the same world at 20 years ago when we just did us. I keep my head buzzed and while I daily get told how beautiful I am and how 'they' wish they were that brave I'm aware I'm also judged. Oh well. 😊
So true! ❤️
Other people judging your every decision based on this one lifestyle-choice is just maddening. Btw I like your dreads. I think they are fun! One day I may be brave enough to try it. 😊
I loved your hair can't wait to see the new ones.
share your journey when you go to the professional for your locks
I think you look way cooler and younger with your hair that way. Its very funky 😂
@@Nourishingminimalism That's awesome ! Me too . Looking forward to seeing the process and result .😊
@@Nourishingminimalismlove your way of thinking 💪🏻👊🏻🤩
How funny that anyone thinks they can tell anyone else how they should look or live or judge whether they are meeting specific qualifications. I can hardly wait to peel down my belongings to just the things I want and enjoy; yes, the things I ENJOY. How great will that be?!🎉
did you think your hair looked busy??
Love your hair!❣️❣️❣️ I’m copying you!
I want to get them too! 😁👍
Fun!! 🥰
❤❤❤😊
❤️🌸❤️
Isnt it great we dont all like the same things or look the same, wouldnt that be boring, i dont think i would like to deal with only people like me all the time😂
So true! ❤️❤️
I'm sad you got negative comments about your dreads.
I don't think hair has anything to do with minimalism unless you have an overflowing amount of hair products that are cluttering your space. By the way, I am not a fan of your hairstyle, but who cares. My opinion, or anyone else other than your husband, doesn't matter and we don't have a say.
So now minimalist is in hair now?? That is crazy.
Don’t like the dreads on you. You look old which is a shame cause you’re a pretty lady. Pixie hair and lipstick makes you so much prettier.
I donated all of my nicknacks. It takes me 2 minutes to wipe down my surfaces. I enjoy doing it now. The prep took longer than the cleaning, so I would avoid doing it. 🥹🙂🙃🥰☺️ 🐾
