    We took our dog Arya sailing for the first time. She's a 1 year old Samoyed puppy. We had a lovely day on the like but did have a bit of adventure when we temporarily lost our ability to steer the boat!

    When the wind gusts hit, the boat's speed increases. That changes the direction of the apparent wind, even if the true wind's direction remains the same. Maybe that was some of what you experienced? Good job in staying calm when you lost steering. You got it all sorted out quickly. Another option would be to keep the sails up and heave to. Faster and easier. Looks like you all had a fun outing. Well done. --Jim

      Hi Jim, yeah in retrospect we could've just heaved to once we had the emergency tiller on. By that point we had the engine running so we ended up favoring using it. But I don't like having to rely on the engine, practicing "wind only" solutions seems preferable. Next time! lol. Thanks for commenting.

    Remaining calm in situations is necessary, as you both demonstrated. Learning things along the way and every time you venture away. Looking forward to a human baby from you to, but for now, the dog is adorable.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing! Nice job recovering from the steering failure too. Remember to never wrap lines (ropes) around your hand. Worst case, you can lose your hand. If you need more grip try sailing gloves with grippy palms like Ronstan's. Also, use your feet against the bulkhead and legs for leverage when pulling the halyard, like a rowing machine.
    A couple more comments: remember to not jump off the boat (especially smaller ones). Jumping moves the boat up and down and also potentially away from the dock. (Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.) Step off, preferably backwards onto the dock, holding onto the shrouds before stepping off. Try not to pull on the lifelines or stanchions. They're not very strong and can potentially bend or break if you pull too hard on them. The bimini top is even weaker, so definitely don't pull on it. We always attach dock lines to the cleats on the boat and run them outside the lifelines before getting to the dock. Then we step off the boat holding a shroud (until stepping off) and holding a dock line in the other hand and use and then use the dock lines around the dock cleats to bring the boat to the dock. That's how we learned it in class too. Since you have a crew of two, one of you can be at the helm and other can step off with a dock line at the dock. Work as a team. (Don't worry about Arya; she'll be fine for a couple minutes.)
    If you were sailing single handed you could try to catch the aft dock line around the cleat at the end of the dock and use it to brake the boat and swing the bow towards the dock. Couldn't see if you had the fenders out, but obviously you want to do that before docking, whether you have one or two people.

      @jandradventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey, yeah, while editing the footage I saw how I was wrapping my hand while pulling the main halyard. Gotta break that habit. I guess it's also more proper to grab the line with your thumb away from the winch, need to practice that too.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jessica and Ryan Adventures Yep, thumbs away from the winch. To really reinforce it, stick your thumb out like a thumbs up sign. You also wrapped the main sheet around your hand while you were at the helm. Get your other crew member to help; Arya will be ok. :)

    I know this post is 18 months old, but I've been following you for the past few months and TH-cam suggested it today. SHOCKED to see it was Canyon Lake Marina. That's the marina we used for 8 years with our 1987 31.5' Irwin Citation which we sold in 2000. Also noticed the boat you took out in this video was berthed next to an identical Irwin - back in '87 two guys at the marina ordered 2 identical Irwins the boat next to your that day was the sister boat of mine. The Irwins were two of the largest boats on Canyon Lake for a number of years. It's a fun lake and BIG but you are right the winds are very fluky and change direction constantly. Small small world.

    OK, there is a burning pet question that needs to be answered. Just where does the dog shit? Is this like training a dog to do one more trick? Beautiful dog, BTW !! ...and not only did I like, but I subscribed as well. Looking forward to following your sailing adventures !! Indicentally, that doggie life vest is almost identical to the doggie STRESS VESTS often used to calm the animal around Fourth of July fireworks, etc. You would think the dog would be warm, but the "vest" seems to surround the dog in a virtual hug :) Fair winds and Following Seas !! Yeah the bathroom issue is one we're going to have to figure out. From preliminary research it looks like you can rig a fake grass patch, usually kept near the bow for the dog to go. This probably won't be too big an issue for us because we have a patch of real grass on our patio for her to use. We subscribed to this service that would mail a new patch of grass every month. When she was a little puppy it was perfect when she needed to go to the bathroom every 2-3hrs. Now its useful for bad whether or letting her out at night. We live in an apartment on the 3rd floor so having the patio option is a huge convenience. Easing from real grass to fake grass with a collection pan underneath should hopefully not be too difficult. That being said we do have some research to do there.

    You guys crack me up. You are like a younger, better-looking version of my wife and me. We went through the ASA classes and learned the same things you did. Seriously, I pretty much have said the exact line you did about the puff coming from a new direction. We also brought our dog with us. The way you guys relate is just like us. Definitely, shoot me a note if you are ever in Phoenix. We also sail in San Diego a fair bit.
    Also, do you race much? I have been fortunate to race a lot and it has really made me a better sailor. We have a C14.2 and I raced that last year with an active and knowledgeable fleet. This year, my wife is going to be my crew. First race day went well, but it will be interesting I'm sure. My goal is not to win trophies, I'm just using racing to hone my skills.

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We've done just one actual race. But plan on doing more. I definitely learned a lot from doing it though. Though my goals for doing races are the same as yours. More to learn how to hone skills than to win.
      Also, if we're even down in San Diego and have some spare time we'll be sure to let you know!

    The wind on the water you are speaking of is called a "puff."

  • @richardswatman7027
    @richardswatman7027 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Enjoying your video's. Impressed with the way you handled the steering issue. Couple of points. Yes, when you hit 'pressure' (gusts) it can either be 'heading' you (back winding) or lifting you (allowing you to sail higher). If you watch closely you can often tell as it comes across the water what direction its from relative to the usual wind. Wind will often cycle by a few degrees with some regularity too. You can tack to take advantage of this. Time spent racing will really accelerate your skills. Also, depending on the boat somewhat, but many older monohulls (and some new) like to be sailed at a large angle of heel when heading to windward. Often they sail fastest literally with edge of the deck at water level. You should try to experience getting a monohull (in the grove) at the edge of maximal advantage in terms of heeling to windward/sails etc. There really is nothing like it and it's what makes me love monohulls (that groove feeling) which is less obvious on a cat (i like cats too though!). You shouldn't be afraid of heeling too much (only back of when the steering gets uncomfortable or difficult). Best regards and good luck with all your future sailing and vids. Keep em coming!

    that thing with the cables is called a steering quadrant......most boats have them if they have an inboard rudder. and it looded as if the cables had been stretched too much and needed replacement ages ago

    You might consider crewing on some race boats if there is any race activity near where you live. It is an awesome opportunity to learn about wind shifts, reading the sails, and getting the most out of the sails. Most boat owners are more than happy for dependable crew! Glad you are getting experience sailing! it amazes me how many folks get a boat and have never sailed before. kind of like taking drivers ed in a semi truck!

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, agreed about people getting a sailboat with no experience on them. Crazy. That being said, if we had more money than we knew what to do with who knows. Either way us having to wait a year to save money is a good thing. Yeah, we'd be open to racing with people, like you said it seems like really good practice.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you got to sail! Any time on the water is good since you'll continue to learn from it. Racing would be more intense, and you would learn a lot. Even just cruising with a racing-oriented skipper interested in teaching some things can be very educational. Definitely continue to build up as much sailing experience as you can before you get your boat. It will probably make you smarter buyers too.

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, good point, agreed, after the holidays are over we're gonna look to sail with some more racing oriented folks to grow our knowledge base.

      groom heavily in the spring. sammy's undercoats are heavy and deep, and act like a sponges when wet. they're good swimmers but will bring half the ocean with them back on the boat.

    Ryan, was unaware they equipped inboard gas engines for sailboats

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, It's not as common from what I understand, gasoline is more dangerous than diesel because gasoline fumes are explosive which is not an issue with diesel. Boats with gas engines are required to have a ventilation/fan system in them to help prevent them from blowing up.
