PCA Spotlight: We compare three aftermarket LED Porsche 911 headlights

- Air-cooled Porsche 911 owners from 1964-1994 are faced with several options when it comes to headlights. Aside from replacing a blown bulb for your stock H5 headlights or sourcing a set of European H4s, there are several companies who offer modern LED headlights with superior lighting. In this video, we install LED headlights from Flat 6 Illumination, Audette Collection, and 9Eleven and compare them to the stock H5 lamps. Watch the video above.

Please note: The Porsche used in this video is a 1987 911 Carrera, which came stock with H5 headlights. 911s and 964s through the 1994 model year used the same headlights. Wiring on your 911 may be different, so please check with the manufacturer to be sure your next set of LED headlamps is plug and play out of the box.
I am actually in the market for LED lights for my 1990 964 and heard about the 9Eleven however was not aware of the others. Further, I really would not have thought that I could change out the old light for a new by myself. You did a great job explaining how-to-do-it-yourself and I will in fact do that. Thanks for saving me the money for installation. I really like this feature of the PCA. Phil Deleon.

Nice vid. I went for the Flat 6 Illumination as the best combination of price and performance. Super happy. It’s a great design. Way better than the previous Porsche Forum option I tried previously which never fit, and especially way better than making my own “retrofit” project (I did a set successfully for my truck, but it took multiple attempts and I promised myself never again - my time has to be worth something).
Even with the Flat6 option, My “every hand made Porsche is different” fenders made fitting one of the trim rings difficult, and I ended up cracking a lens. Here’s the best part - Francois wouldn’t let me order a replacement, I tried, he gave me new lenses instead.
So - great design, great service, and a stand up enthusiast behind it all - feels so much better to give my real dollars to a real human behind a great design. Highly recommended.
Recently put a set of projector style LEDs on my 944. Was very pleased with the results and strongly recommend upgrading the stock halogens.
Great video guys. Would have loved to see how well the various LED options throw light down the road; LED is great for putting out a lot of lumens but sometimes the throw doesn't seem to be any better than a well-aimed H4.
Interesting DIY episode. Would love to see this for the 1994 - 1998 993 models.
Thank you for this great video. I am looking for a 97 or 98 C2S. But I really want LED headlight option as I drive all over Florida for work and, often, I drive at night. This video taught me so much and I just wanted to say thank you.
Awesome headlights and video! Why has nobody made these for the 996/986 yet? Between gen 1 996 and boxster 986 there are probably 300k cars out there with dated headlights. Even a simple black housing with updated headlights would do the trick. It's a great business opportunity for any of these companies with expertise in headlight manufacturing.
Love the lights, But I prefer the painted trim piece, gives it it's original look; Do any of these upgrades allow for the original Porsche Painted trim to go back on or are you not able to use it? the chrome trim back-dates the car to a 70's looking Porsche, not a huge fan.
perfect info. One question- can my original ring be used ? The one that is painted White? vs going with chrome trim.

Nice lights, hope that they supply yellow LED bulbs rather than WalMart look bluish bulbs.
I would be most interested in the 1st example by Flat 6. I would never change the look of my 87 car but am thinking about upgrading the lighting. With the Fluted lens it looks pretty stock.

Do a video for the 997.1 HED lights.
1964-1967 911/912 cars did not have the four-screw mounting points, so it's understandable these three units do not either. Wondering what the low / high / dual-burn wattage draws are for each of the units, especially important for the early cars with lower wattage wiring systems. Do they all have an anti-flicker harness built in? As used in the Audette product, wondering if there is a fourth owner option for longhoods to install J.W. Speaker Corp. headlight assemblies into original factory 7" Hella USA spec assemblies, as they accept 7" round replacement incandescent and halogen lights, and Cibie H4 reflector units.

Nice job Vu - I have a 1991 964 Right Hand Drive and wondering if the adapter is H4 or H5 - also my bevel of ring is black, can I use the bevel that is on the car?

How are the after market LED headlights regarded by collectors, enthusiasts? How about on 987.2 caymans…
Most will prefer the original lighting for collectibility. That said, you can always convert back.

The H4 Bosch lenses are designed for the H4 lights and when you put them in front of a modern projector it only degrades the beam pattern. Shame on PCA for not knowing this and actually choosing to install those options and shame on the manufacturers for actually making those lenses available. FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION and this form degrades function. And the presenter has obviously never installed a Bosch H4 light in a 911 or he'd already be familiar with the clipped mounting system. That surprises me, but maybe not considering the lack of solid information here. And the testing. What the hell was that. That was not testing. That was shining your lights against a fairly reflective garage door at just a few feet. This is an embarrassingly bad presentation. Interestingly, I did talk to the folks at 9Eleven a while back. They're product designers who went to Art Center College in Pasadena - my alma mater but unfortunately they're using, like Fast6, cheap Chinese Morimoto crap that does not come close to being legal in any sense. The Audette using the JW Speaker is the only legal option here but again, you've opted to put a non functioning lens over the front which alters the beam pattern enough to likely make it not safe. You can do better than this - or maybe not.
