A STAR IS BORN.
Favolosa e celestiale!!
Of course she brought down the house with this. She brought down the heavens! Marilyn Horne, established diva, whom she replaced, called her after the performance to say she had never heard such a Lucretia and one she could have never given the people and would never sing the role again! Horne went on to say that, not that night, but shortly Montserrat would rule the opera world as the greatest soprano. Over the years, these two became close friends. This shows not only what an unmatchable singer was beloved Caballe but what a terrific woman (still is in 2025!) Marilyn Horne is.
How amazing. She’s so young here. Skill & talent right from the start. What a wonderful career she has had. Miss her, two years after her death. Thank you for keeping her here with these beautiful clips.
Incredibile: il finale che Donizetti avrebbe voluto (1840). La Caballé è al solito una meraviglia e le fa onore avere rinunciato a "Era desso il figlio mio".
So very special, no wonder the audience were in raptures ,Montserrat the magical one and only 💖💝💘
Siamo in paradiso!!!!!
That beautiful ending is sadly practically never used.
This sounds like Alfredo Kraus. But it ends with applause so it is the live recording from Carnegie, not the commercial recording she did with Kraus.
This is the famous performance which launched her international career - replacing a pregnant Marilyn Horne. The voice utterly fabulous in quality, floated on endless breath and with impeccable musicianship. How lucky we were to have both Caballé and Sutherland interpreting the great bel canto roles at the same time and yet quite differently. This version uses Donizetti's later revised version deleting the florid cabaletta which both she and Sutherland later made such a spectacular conclusion to the opera. Lovely too to hear Alain Vanzo a wonderfully stylish tenor.
That scream at 11.48…
Caballe impresionante, Vanzo demasiado verista en este repertorio.
