What is the difference between a structured sober living home and a halfway house?
They are both group homes that are set up to help people struggling with substance use disorders - so it’s worth explaining the differences.
There are often negative connotations associated with the term ‘halfway house’. It’s traditionally been the ‘in between’ from jail to living on your own, whereas sober living is the facilitated transition from treatment to living on your own.
Sometimes in a halfway house, a senior member will get free rent to help oversee the functioning, but they don’t have the training or oversight to be in the position that they’re in.
In a structured sober living home the house managers don’t have other full-time jobs - their job is to be the house manager. A sober living home will have full-time W-2 employees as team members.
A sober living home will include random drug-testing twice a week - regardless of whether the house manager thinks that you’re high or drunk. It’s preventative. If you know you’re getting tested, you’re not likely to relapse as you know you’ll be discharged.
There’s a curfew set up at a structured sober living home, as well as time to rise, TV times, and technology-assisted care. There can be also GPS tracking and there is communication with support staff regarding your activities outside of the house.
Food is included at sober living homes, promoting community. When all the food belongs to everybody, there’s less chance of fighting between members over who stole whose food.
A halfway house doesn’t enforce working a recovery program, whereas sober living does. Staff is paid to hold clients accountable and facilitate their recovery. This leads to better self-care. Gym membership is often included.
Sober living homes are often in more family-orientated neighborhoods, where the chance of encountering drugs on the street is less likely.
A sober living is also better equipped to handle process addictions (sex and gambling), and some mental illnesses. Again, this is because of the W2 staff on-site.
A halfway house is often court-ordered as part of a parole term. That’s not the case with sober living.
A halfway house is usually a lot cheaper. A sober living in Arizona will cost anything from $3000 to $10000 a month, depending on the house, and whether or not you have a private room.
Sober living requires a longer time commitment - up to three months. A halfway house is often weekly, and only a few hundred dollars a week. So it’s more ‘pay as you go’ versus the structure of a sober living program.
When people are paying for their recovery, it shows they want to be there. And this, in my experience, is far conducive to a healthy recovery.

In 1974, Patricia Campbell Hearst became 20 years old during victimization of a kidnapping. Half a year after I was 17 and half a year before I was 18.
Early 1990s I recall reporting to the Court just a short trip from the site of the Shootout held with the S.L.A. on every television everywhere. Wearing a Juror badge and listening to another behind a Juror badge, too, outside Court in the hallway of, exchanging his "Boat People" experience.

I went through a sober living house in Kc, cost me 80 a week and they gave me a month to get a job.

@@RealEstateDealsOnly Sober living homes are not covered by insurance because they do not provide clinical services. As a result, the costs are always paid by the client, their loved ones, or through scholarships. I also have another video discussing the differences between structured sober living homes and halfway houses that you can check out.

@@CamelbackRecovery Now *this* was informative. I currently reside in an SLE here in CA. It's my first experience and it's been a bit of a doozy. My expectations of certain processes were a little higher than they should have been. Suffice to say--I know better. And, of course, knowing is half the battle.

How does the Recovery House bill the tenants? Does health insurance pay the rent?

Good question. At this time recovery housing/sober living is not covered by insurance.
