I failed my SDM interview last year and I came across this one and this is one of the best videos I have watched. I have cleared this time around and joining aws as SDM in couple of weeks. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you a lot, GG and Vivek! A lot of unique insights!! IMO, as a non-technical person, was the information regarding the difference between the system design manager's and engineer's views (50:22 m). Thank you so much. This information made me more comfortable with the interview!
Thank you very much Vivek for your super valuable information. Thanks to GG for selecting you to explain the differences between the Managers & Engineer roles.👍
Thank you GG, for you valuable content. I failed the LOOP for SDM about 10 months ago, getting ready for another attempt and would require lot of mocks.
Thank you, very helpful! Curious about his comment "if I'm a 50-year-old engineer, if I have to find another job it's going to be impossible." Is this just referring to the element of ageism out there in the industry?
I didn't say those words they're Vivek's- but my assumption is that he's imagining what others might be thinking, I don't think he's making a social observation of his perception of the industry. FWIW I worked with plenty of 50+ devs.
@@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 Thank you, I see, he's saying some individuals may be thinking that they need to switch from SDE to SDM just to avoid ageism. Can't say it hasn't crossed by mind. But in my AWS loop (no-pass) I talked to two SDEs who were also middle-aged.
Good content. Is there any difference in the technical competencies of Quality assurance manager and SDM? Is there anything extra i should be knowing about? Appreciate your efforts.
Very insightful. Does Amazon only hire experienced SDM's?? Will a SDE with 8 year experience in a different organisation will be considered for SDM role at Amazon?
I don’t have that level of insight. Try reaching out to an Amazon recruiter who hires SDMs. If you follow me on LinkedIn I comment on lots of Engineering roles posted by recruiters
I am little confused.. What is the difference between SDM and Program Manager at Amazon? Generally, bunch of SDM's report to Program Manager but here it seems to be opposite? Can you please clarify?
Program Managers don't necessarily have any elements of engineering in their scope. However in a scenario where SDMs are reporting into a Prog M I'd assume the Prog M has a scope that extends beyond the software development side of the program, such as Product Management, Operations, Marketing, etc.
Thank you GG for the good content. Unfortunately I just found a little late. Got a rejection after the LOOP interview today. I still want to try the same position (Solutions Architect) again though. Do you have any advice for people like me?
Wait out your cooling off period and then try again. Main reasons candidates get rejected 1) fit for role 2) scope & complexity of examples. Not much you can do about 1) but reflect on your examples and challenge yourself if they showcased all of the working parts of people, process, systems, impact to illustrate their biggest scope and complexity. Good luck.

I can’t speak to the technical aspects of the thousands of different job families in Amazon, I’m afraid.
Curious for people who have gone through Amazon/Google/Meta EM manager - how much focus should be put focus on coding and design review questions?
Damn didn't know he was coming today, missed it
