Well yeah but one, S.H.I.E.L.D is a worldwide organization not linked to any country and two, this plane was ludicrously expensive because cousins team was supposed to act like a low-key version of the avengers and therefore required a fast mobile base that they could stay on for long periods of time in order to complete their work.
I think its similar to the emperor palpatine logic: why does the most powerful sith lord in the galaxy (at the time) need a bunch of guards to protect him? It's to give everybody the illusion that the emperor isn't that powerful...the POTUS is symbolic of the US's power, it is not THE power itself, thus the POTUS doesn't need an aerial tank, he just needs something to make sure he doesn't get blown outta the sky over Iran
I actually built a recreation of this in Kerbal Space Program once, and to my surprise it actually worked as a VTOL capable vehicle. Since my only source is KSP, you may wanna take this with a grain of salt, but I think a VTOL C-17 might actually be possible in real life. Who knows?
It's totally possible, we have engines capable of that kind of thrust to weight ratio. The hard part would be designing an engine that can rotate like that without breaking off. And if it's too complex the maintenance on it might not be worth it, plus the extra fuel it would burn to lift the plane in vtol mode since the wings won't be providing lift while in vtol.
@@Yukimaru0 I mean, vtol is barely viable in modern fighters to the point ir's been almost entirely relegated to short take off use, if we assume a vtol C-17 to be used for cargo then I don't think that it would be able to take off with any significant load. It might be useful to deliver cargo or personal somewhere that doesn't have an airstrip, as long as it takes off in normal configuration I guess it could then land vertically and then take off once unloaded, but at that point you'd be better off sending two ospreys or a cargo helicopter. Maybe it could be used as a mobile base, maybe as a replacement for the current airforce one? I mean, I guess that being able to land a C17 anywhere would be invaluable during an emergency, while during regular operation it'd need less maintenance and wouldn't use it's vtol features besides maybe sometimes as a showpiece in military parades or something. In short it wouldn't be practical, but I dont think it'd be impossible or useless. In the end Ospreys have a good 90% of those drawbacks but are still very much in service and appreciated by the military so who knows, maybe someday
@@npc6817 You'd basically have to ask yourself if the amount of cargo your abel to land would allow you to get set up faster by enough to have a viable use case. And then you'll want to figure out if the cost to develop and operate would be worth the gains from being able to land or fly out the larger payloads. In the MCU we can only assume that they have tech available that brings the cost to build and operate down low enough to make the plane viable.

Seen @1:00 and @1:07, I made the BUS desk model for the show, first season. It had a lighted base with SHEILD logo, and red, green navigation lights. I also made the little Lola toys, too.

The cage being further back makes sense. The increased weight of the craft might've required more lift. Rather than rebuilding the original wings by adding 2 smaller wings they could add more lift but this would push the centre of lift back too. Therefore the centre of mass would've been moved towards the back of the plane to help with stability. Hence why the cage would be further back and why they needed the full size VTOL engines. Also the TWR for vtol might've necessitated the larger engines.
that's what I was thinking too when I saw the larger rear wings. And the rear engines could be operating in a reduced capacity during normal flight, as they wouldn't be needed as much, to mitigate some of the problems it would have by ingesting some of the forward engines exhaust. In any sort of vtol/stol mode, it would have no problems with ingesting exhaust and with the cage being pushed towards the rear, the full sized engines help with stability like you said.

That would be nice, to solidify the show's place in the MCU. Or even just Coulson, and the reactions of the surviving original avengers to his being alive, or as alive as being an LMD is. Would have been neat to have the Coulson Chronicom LMD disguised at Stark's funeral.
The total internal compartments (based on their size and scale from the videos) seem a bit too much for an aircraft this size. And if you regularly dock other objects on the top of the fuselage, you would want to have split tails instead of a central V stab.
for the upper deck docking system, the single vertical fin design would creature stabilities problem when smaller jet are dock on top of it when flight, this is why the an225 Antonov split the central vertical fin into 2 vertical fin on each end of the tail.
That problem is reduced when you look at the jet head-on. There is plenty of clearance to avoid exhaust or vortices since airflow will not de-laminate from the fuselage.

The wings on a C-17 are designed to create turbulent flow to reduce stalling, and the rear engines are certainly within the wake of the forward inboard engines' exhaust cones, meaning they will be sucking in hot air, which would cause premature heating, flame outs, and overall a host of other engine problems
i think like most near-futuristic military vehicles in many movies, all of this is possible in real life, its only the matter of whether or not we actually needed one
like most near futuristic military vehicles in any marvel movie, it is not only impossible but a total waste of resources to even attempt such a braindead project. a VTOL c17 is pretty pointless, a 'flying base' is even more pointless. not to mention the whole thing could be taken out with one missile. its the dumbest idea you could come up with for a base.
Glad other people see the engine placement issue. A couple of other fun issues is that big turbofans don't throttle up and down fast enough to be able to control a craft in vertical flight (hence jets like the F-35 have extra control systems for pitch and roll). Another fun one (which is present in most airplanes in movies) is the HUGE size discrepancy of the inside and outside of the plane.
In regard to your second point yes jet engines are slow to change throttle. This problem is largely fixed by running the after burner to provide thrust that can change quickly and the outer edge of the exhaust opens to quickly reduce thrust.
Not as much of a discrepancy - the actual interiors would fit... the issues though in the show is actually a result of CGI, like when its parked in the hanger in season 2, the wings would be well into the damn walls lol. Or like at the start of the second episode of season 1 when Skye is just coming aboard as an actual member of the team, and the establishing shot reveals only a thin slit in the wall piece that sits above the doors of the hanger,... and the plane clearly is too big to fit (with the vertical stabiliser) without such a slit, except... at the top of the vertical stabiliser is the horizontal stabilisers.
fun fact, most airliners are only one bolt failure away from having there engine vertical... and then typically break of. This have happened a number of times Factoid 2... the engine of a C5 galaxy have a maximum thrust of 23 ton each, about 92 tons in total. The operational empty weight is 172 tons. So even with adding two more engines, it would still not be able to lift vertical, even with totally empty. Well i guess, swiching out those for GE90 would solve that issue. Having a total lift power of 230 tons with 4 engines and up to 345 tons with 6 engines, would actually be quite close to the MTOW of the aircraft. Granted, the engines would ad 4 tons each for the 4 normal once and an additional 8 ton each for the two extra, total extra weight of 32 tons, increasing the empty weight from just about 170 tons to just over 200 tons. The exhaust of a turbofan engine is actually not that hot, specially not in cruise. The air is mostly mixed out. So could you make a Vtol aircraft this way... well pretty much yes. The main issue with making a VTOL turbofan engine is the spool up and down time. This can be compensated with having the engine thrust in a non optimal direction Fotnote. I thought it looked like a C5, but on closer inspection, its a C17, a slightly smaller aircraft. All numbers a bit smaller, so.. well it would be easier to find a engine that would fit.
I would be willing to bet that the engines are also equipped with Tony's Repulsor technology. That's probably the afterburner you're mentioning, good video though
Most things in this thing can be booked under "it works because sci-fi" and thats fine. but what really bothers me is the fact that those engines produce mach diamonds and people arent deaf after it landed nearby

The plane could've altered from an international cargo plane with a focus on durability. The defense could be handled with some drones. They could travel by accessing the airport computers.
Actually all the VToL ability was feasable, the danger was the fact, it was a chem-fuel combustion, too risky for a rock-drop crash during vtol sequal. Had it been more like a real "Air Bus" carrier engine, the option of holding lesser fluids, and more mini nuclear amp electric, the fuel during cruise mode, could have made it even more reality. If the main wings had considerable elongated form near the shoulder, all the engines could be on each width row, *front bottom & rear over top* for vtol-to-cruise rapid effects. Only small cd-tray style ductfans adjacent, at the very front and back of the craft body.
This show was cool until sky’s mother killed that guy with the awesome mustache. That was such a fucking painfully stupid decision. I was excited to actually see some sort of progress being made in terms of an alliance between the “mutants” and SHIELD. They took that meeting in the absolutely worst direction they possibly could have.
It's a very ideal way to convert a cruise air-ship/plane into VTOL. Only in real life, a practical full engine rotation, versus vector valves (f-35 style), will require a rugged wing limb to bare the actuator & mechanism bulk size. The rear engines needed be tail high.
Cool how it was able to travel through time and stay cloaked at a high enough altitude without aircraft from whatever time period detecting an anomaly like pilots noticing a visible distortion in the air
If this plane was modified by Stark Industries (which basically means Tony) it would surely use repulsores as its engines instead of normal turbojets. Which would mitigate the sucking hot exhaust problem. The blue Tinted colour of the afterburner flames do indicate that. How could you miss that?
The other clue is the insane range and vtol capabilities. Has the show ever shown them refueling at all? Once they were a small terrorist organization how could they possibly have fleets of tankers you would need with her fuel based engines.

It's a very ideal way to convert a cruise air-ship/plane into VTOL. Only in real life, a practical full engine rotation, versus vector valves (f-35 style), will require a rugged wing limb to bare the actuator & mechanism bulk size. The rear engines needed be tail high.

If this plane was modified by Stark Industries (which basically means Tony) it would surely use repulsores as its engines instead of normal turbojets. Which would mitigate the sucking hot exhaust problem. The blue Tinted colour of the afterburner flames do indicate that. How could you miss that?
The other clue is the insane range and vtol capabilities. Has the show ever shown them refueling at all? Once they were a small terrorist organization how could they possibly have fleets of tankers you would need with her fuel based engines.
