I just love watching senior folks doing what, (at least to me) is one of the present things in life. Seems as if the young people lost the instinct of self reliance. More videos please. Wishing you all the best.Oh, ya! Really like that cub .very clean.

I remember when my dad used this old way back in the early 50s. Loved walking barefoot in those weed-free fields!

Great video. Love it I actually have a very similar setup. A steel wheel one row tater planter and a farmall cub sitting in the shed, my planter is a little different. And some cub equipment, plow disk and a cub buzz saw

In the 70s I spent a lot of time riding the back of a two row Iron age planter. We planted 300 acres with one, after ten years we got a second one.

You are missing two pieces that would cover the potatoes once planted.

I wonder if you could rig up some kind of hiller on the back of the planter to cover the potatoes as you drop them?

Do you still have planter. I am trying to restore one and need some pictures of mechanisms

Back in the day, was the front hopper used for fertilizer? Also when it was horse powered, did it require one or two people to operate? Thank you!

We have one. Yes the front bin is for fertilizer. Has a belt system of some sort for the fertilizer. The belt is gone off ours so we hadn't used the fertilizer feature for quite a few years prior to parking it.
Only one person could ride. You had to make sure the potatoes were falling down to where the wheel with nails in it could grab them. Had a stick that was about 18" long you had to poke around to keep the taters moving now and then. He is missing the back hillers off this unit that would cover the potatoes with dirt.
Ours hasn't been out of the garage in probably 20 years or more. I'm sure if we pulled it out it would put them in the ground. Solid old unit.

Did that unit have hillers behind it at one point? I used to have a iron age two row and I thought it covered the taters up.

+Taylor Miller It used to have hillers, but at one point we took them off so that someone could walk behind the planter and throw in potatoes where it missed. (but with 7 acres of potatoes, that was a lot of work)
Since then we have replaced some of the needles in the planting mechanism, and it doesn't miss very much. We use the Cub shown in the video to cover the rows.

I have a two row slightly newer Iron Age that has rear discs to cover. .....
7 acres....thats A LOT of taters to harvest!!

Can you buy them or someone sells rebuilt ones?

They are out there. I just found a second one. Mine are two row...in this video they are missing the "closing discs" at the rear. With mine, one has wood bins, on rubber tires, the second is steel bins on steel wheels. Otherwise they are twins. Very good dependable machines. I also have a much earlier carousel style single row Iron Age that could still be used but is missing a few of the "pre lift" parts....could still be loaded by hand. The forrow opening and closing is the most important part.

Wow! Does that planter cut the potatoes as they are fed into the ground? Very unique machine. Old equipment still works great, just mot as fast.

The potatoes are cut by hand first.
