  • Einars Tupuritis of Wichita State won the 1996 800m race at the NCAA outdoor track and field championship. Tuperitis won with a wire-to-wire lead and a time of 1:45.08. Tupuritis was involved in a car crash one hour before this race, according to a 1996 article in the Wichita Eagle.

    That was a pretty insane race by the winner. He had his foot on the gas the entire time and the announcer was right he foot his foot down on that 3rd 200 and essentially eliminated the chance of anyone catching him as they had to work just as hard to keep up.
    Also very interesting that he just about does a little heel strike there. Not traditional but he generates so much power with that technique it looks like.

    Never forget this day. 4 from the same school in an 8 lane NCAA final never happened before or sense. Julius was hurt in this race otherwise he beats them all IMO. He ran 1:44.5 (setting the NCAA record) earlier that season.
    Only getting 12 points hurt us bad and we never recovered. Still rallied to get 2nd in the team title tho! Shoutout to all my GMU teammates! Fun times!!!

      @@Rmxpaola Hayward underwent a massive renovation that made it more modern. It’s nice but not as nice as the intimate aspect that you had back then.
