    Personally I'd go for a second hand HW (or AA, BSA) for a good starter budget gun.

    Hi Andy, nice to see a Stoeger review. I bought one of these, the 20J version, for HFT Open (over 16J springer) shooting, as Weihrauchs are shockingly expensive in Brazil and nobody had the .177 Gamo CFX at the time. Initially I was very disappointed, velocities were all over the place and the trigger was too heavy, so I put it away. Eventually I started putting pellets through it, just for plinking in the garden. After a couple of tins I noticed that I was hitting more than missing, so I checked again and the spread had really tightened up, with very consistent velocities and a very smooth loading gate. I put a Quickshot trigger on it and a decent scope and started testing pellets. Mine likes JSB Exact Heavies, 10.34gr, and now I use it for the purpose I bought it for, HFT-BR Open Springer matches. I have a Gamo CFX for the under 16J class, but I now really like the RX40 for the open class. The swappable grips have different textures so I can adapt the grip to different weather conditions. Perseverance is the name of the game with this one.

    Seems to shoot quite well for a budget. As a time seasoned springer shooter myself you will get more accuracy by shooting with the forend resting on your hand also , the rest restricts the recoil.and i can remember the days when the top field target gun was the HW77 😂

    True story. Bought a Stoeger last year, wooden stock variant break barrel for father in law to shoot targets in his garden. He has shot about 30 rounds. Put it back in its box under his bed. So ..came to look at it a few weeks ago and found surface rust around the barrel break mechanism underneath...never been out in wet or damp...oiled when purchased ...cant believe the metal quality.

      Rusty fingers is the reason! Use a silicon cloth after use and put a small bag of silca gel in the gunbag.

    • @BoggWeasel
      @BoggWeasel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Could be the difference in the air temp taking it from cold outside to warm inside causing condensation that was then trapped in the box (doesn't take much).... I always let my guns "warm up" and dry off in the house before putting them away.... Just a thought...

    • @ytucharliesierra
      @ytucharliesierra 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Any rifle will be prone to surface rust, no matter how supposedly bad or not bad the metal quality. When you say it was around the barrel break mechanism, obviously that's where the the action removed the oil you mentioned. No matter how "undamp" the surroundings may be, without care, surface rust is always a risk. As a kid back in the 70s and 80s I have learned my lesson: nowadays, after every session with my HW57, the rifle gets a thorough oildown on the barrel break mechanism and the parts that I have been touching with my hands, which is the loading lever and the loading gate with its surroundings. I trickle some Ballistol on these areas and smear it on with my finger. (that stuff is dermatologically testet, you can actually use it as massage oil).
      I don't buy the spray Ballistol because it is more expensive than the non spray for exactly the same amount. I use a dripper to trickle the required amount on the gun for the smearing treatment and oil the hinges of the break mechanism.
      I also don't use any cloth to make sure I don't end up rubbing off the bluing. Granted this may appear exaggerated but I'd rather play it safe. 🤓

    Morning Andy, this one reminds me a bit of the HW57 which also is an under lever with a pop up loading port, but a much better made gun with Weihrauch quality for about £100 more. I have a Cometa Fenix 400 compact star .22 which I paid £220 for, it’s a break barrel with fibre optic sights and a silencer, it has a fairly decent 2 stage trigger low recoil and is very accurate as well as being quite light. I think it’s a perfect starter rifle and that the Cometa brand is vastly under rated, they make very good quality rifles at decent prices and come with a lifetime warranty.

    I recently purchased one of these when my Myth went in for repair but in a .22. Much like you said, I don't care much for the scope on it. "Iron sighting" it though wasn't too bad, but it could certainly benefit from a better scope. I have a spare Vector Orion I was thinking of putting on it, alas, the mounting bracket is too wide for this rifle.

    Never been much for the Stoegers..
    But. I eo have an X5 break barrel by Stoeger. Some youth model I assume. Not that powerful even, but it shoots good though. I kinda got handed it for free. Then just sighted in the open sights first (previous owner surely hadn't done it, cuz was noticeably off), and then the budget scope. It was very nice to shoot due being wo moderate in power. The rifle kinda is a bonus or extra piece in my collection, but I have not gotten to get rid of it either just since it was so good - especially for the "what money?"...
    But I don't think I'd buy this one for myself. Already have an old Relum underlever (great childhood memories of that one), which works just great.

    Greetings from Buenos Aires, Andy. I have the STOEGER F-40 5.5 mm wood stock. Under lever. Adjustable trigger. Truglo open sights. Maybe a little "tricky" the loading sequence. However as you say, a budget rifle; well finished (made in China) and belongs to the Beretta group.

  • @BoggWeasel
    @BoggWeasel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The loading gate is brilliant... no more fumble fingering the pellet into the breech... Sold here in the USA as the S6000E for $215 synthetic and $30 more for a wood stock.. personally, even as a starter gun, I'd prefer something with a bit more accuracy or maybe find a video where it's a more competent springer shooter using it to see if it's really the gun or the shooter. 😁

    • @ytucharliesierra
      @ytucharliesierra 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you are willing to invest a little more, the Weihrauch HW57 has the same loading gate principle. This Stoeger is pretty much a copy of it. The HW 57 will obviously deliver the required accuracy and a properly adjustable (Rekord) trigger on top. 😁

    • @BoggWeasel
      @BoggWeasel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ytucharliesierra At over twice the price, ( $446. )I'd hardly call the 57 a "budget starter" gun. more of a one time buy, and of course being an HW it's far better quality in fit, finish and operation.

    I have one, and it's not bad for the money. You really need a cheeky riser for use with the scope, as it is set up for the open sights. It is very hold sensitive, unlike my HW30 - which is far superior except for it's lack of power.
    I bought it as a project gun and have an aftermarket trigger which dramatically reduced the pull weight.

    Those inserts look horrendous!
    On a certain gun trading site there are currently over 100 second hand air rifles for sale for the same price or less, that I'd rather have than this. In my youth and even recently I've bought and subsequently sold many older air rifles and pistols from Relum, BSA, Haenel, Weihrauch, Webley etc. You rarely lose much if any money and you can find a gem. Buying something like this I imagine you are throwing away half the money straight away.
    So, buying something decent and a little dearer is often cheaper than something like this. I certainly wouldn't buy a second hand one of these but I would a super meteor or an HW30 or 99S.
    Maybe a comparison of three good budget secondhand springers would be a great watch! Just a thought....

I just hold the pellet in with my thumb whilst pushing the loading gate down with my index finger and the accuracy is spot on for me. Indeed the pellets can't be seated, they would always fall out in that position. If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by loading the pellet directly to the barrel? I'd like to learn about that. 🙂

    I received one a few months ago and it arrived damaged. Before it was returned. I took it out and shot about a dozen pellets through it.... It shot pretty well for a budget
    But how does one properly clean the barrel? That pop-up tray blocks any proper way to clean the barrel. I am worried that anything I run through the barrel say excess debris would fall into the Piston chamber... Shortening the life of the air rifle.
    Anyone know a proper procedure to clean this airgun or did Stoeger make a engineering mistake?

      Have to agree. I got back into air-gunning after fifty years of not shooting anything. I hadn't got a clue about modern developments and so sought advice from an on-line gun shop as to what would be a good ratting gun. I took their advice and ended up with a budget underlever which was the rats' best friend. It was totally unreliable and returned groups much like those the RX40 managed. That gun should not be used for pest control.
      With a bit of experience I bought a Walther LGU, brilliant gun. My first underlever is confined to the loft, it can't be sold on because nobody wants one, the LGU on the other hand is now worth more second hand than I paid for it new. Quality pays. If I hadn't been determined to sort out a rat problem and persisted with research I would have called it a day and missed out on a great hobby..

    The sad thing about UK Airgun reviews is that you are never going to see full power potential of the Airguns reviewed because they detuned it to UK specifications.. always under 12 FPE.. which is very unsatisfactory 😟

    Yet another gun with a huge ugly non removable plastic fore sight suitable as a lighthouse, as a lot (if not most) use scopes and remove them, perhaps one day manufacturers will realise this, hello Cometa/Diana.

    Stoeger are cheap and cheerfull guns. Just needs some work to get the best out of it. Even expensive rifles need that. £190 cannot include fettling, it's just not going to happen. Rifles 4 times the price are better but all rifles benefit from some shooters enthusiasm when it comes to achieving the best you can with it.

    For the love of all things airgun... please, find a trusted second hand dealer & spend a couple of quid more for something that won't rust in the box when u haven't used it for a year. Loud and garish bit of tat.

    Stoeger literally make the hobbie look like a joke, they don't make anything worth the money no matter how cheap they are. It's a false economy, save your money and get a second hand HW77, HW97K or a TX200 of you want a quality underlever.

    Who in their right mind would ever look at buying a "cheap" budget scope? Can't see the purpose of including these worthless scrap item's with a rifle - it's just laziness of the gun manufacturer to stick it in the box, and anyone thinking they're getting a bargain will be massively disappointed - just sell the bleeding rifle - your a gun manufacturer, stick to that and leave the optics to the optic manufacturer's rather than sourcing from temu!

    i was given one of these free to try out. and its possibly to worst rifle ive ever tested. it has no redeeming qualities, the internals were of poor quality, the accuracy lackluster and lastly the firing cycle was so harsh and loud. 1/10
