All new suits are the warmest thing ever. The Ripcurl carpet material breaks quicker than any suit ever. Can someone do a test where they take wetsuits that are 6-months old? True consumer test.
This. The new tech is incredibly warm, so now the real equalizer is durability. I've yet to find a suit where the seams don't go to shit before the 4 month mark.
Just got out in kinda chilly England in the Hyper Freak 4/3 & boots. Stoked on the suit, going to invest in the 5/4 with hood for when it's gets colder.
I have an oneill hyper freak 4.3 and it takes 4 days at least to dry. I am looking for a 3.2 flash bomb cause I feel mine too heavy wet. Would you recommend?
Mikey -- rotate through these suits for the winter and let us know how the warmth holds up. I had used O'neill for a decade and now I'm trying my hand with Rip Curl (the "warmest" suit 2 years in a row per Stab). While the Rip Curls are warm and that fuzzy lining is very soft against the skin, the suits leak at the seams after a few months, drastically dropping their warmth. Also, I am interested in the weight of the suits when wet. I feel like some suits have a low dry weight, but soak up a lot of water and visa versa. Thanks!
yeah Rip Curls always seemed to me to leak, and then get heavy after a season or two. i like Oneils 4/3 but got a online billabong for 150....seems warm and wellmade, but built in hood is WAY to tight, I might cut it off!!!
did you evaluate the putting on and removal of the suit? That is quite important once numb and walking back to your car after dark after surfing lake Michigan. I guess this is only a test for thicker suits. Please invest in a review for cold water suits! No silly ice bath shit, just the ability to put it on and take it off. Taking my suit off is the hardest part when I am frozen and my hands are all cramping, it's so hard. I need a suit that can make that easier. Surfing is all muscle memory, and all the suits are now flexible enough for performance at my level....but at the end of the day, i'm cramping and need help getting this suit off. What suit is easy to take off?
Maybe a zip on the back like the Zen style of O'Neill should work. I had the same problem with a Billabong zipless few years ago, after 2 years I completely destroyed. I usually prefer a back zip.
Visalia is NOT easy to take off...and the neoprene is not nearly as warm as others. Inexpensive suit with a lot of nice features, but I doubt I'll buy vissla again.
@@taradead I could get defensive here. But I'm talking about the 4/3's. I haven't had any experience with the seven seas wettys so can't say anything about that. But for me, I could take em off pretty easily and had warm. It was untill it was getting worn out that it wasn't as warm.
I wear a 3/2 heat seeker when its freezing and a 3/2 flashbomb when it isn't too bad here in the 805. Wearing 4/3 feels like your'e wearing heavy armor or something, the flexibility is nice at the end of the day.
Unscientifically biasing the wetsuit market in 2020 - good job Stab. I'm sure these videos have a rather profound impact on the sales of wetsuits in the next year, and to think it was generated by a series of low-sample size, unimportant tests is crazy. Maybe you should hire a researcher or test engineer to conduct your tests next time.
Awesome intro. and you're a great surfer don't sell yourself short . If you end up in Encinitas I'd surf with you. Aloha!.... PS So my 4/3 was flushing and I'm like why is my back so cold.if you shine a flashlight in your wet suit up on the seems you will see where the holes are these are inevitable after about 2 years. Opting for the wetsuit glue .I went into the repair mode last night. But I am watching this video again to figure out which 3 /2 I'm going to get
I have at least 4 suits in the quiver at all times and 3/2 is a summer suit for us. Isurus has been the best wetsuit I've found in the last few years. Outlasted everything else, lighter, warmer, better fit.
Also you get used to the cold. Better idea would be to test the suits on 3 different days, in a climate controlled environment and he doesn't know which suit is which (blindfolded)
hahahahaha the icebath test is funny cos the time you want to stay in an icebath for the benefits of cold adaptation is 2 to 3 minutes.... without a wetsuit ;)
ive had one of their 7 seas models over a year and i cant complain its just starts wearing down after 7 months or so I have a hole in mine but doesnt bother me at all.
The test is a good example of bad experimental design: statistically invalid. It would be much better to perform less trials with more samples. Take for example the ice bath: it would work better if you just repeated the bath a couple of times on different days with random order of wetsuits. As it was done, It is easy to argue that the second trial which performed best was only due to body acclimatization to cold temperatures, while the first bad performance was due to thermal shock and the third was due to the loss of caloric/energy reserves available to you after two baths.
If buying rip curl suits would you guys recomend the E-Bomb or the F-Bomb to surf on water averaging 13ºC ? I've surfed with 3/2 E-Bomb on 15ºC for hours and never had no issues at all but i'm afraid that E-Bomb4/3 would not be enough for 13ºC? Also I wonder if the F-Bomb 4/3 will be to much and compromise my flexibility. Any tips?
My zipperless O'Niell Hyperfreak is the comfiest suit I've ever worn by far.. but it's pretty much a 1 season suit and it's too expensive to be buying once a year, which is a bummer.
I've had mine for a year and it's still the best, most stretchy and comfortable wetsuit I've ever owned. I rinse it inside and out, and hang dry it in the shade after 95% of my surfs though. I'm in the water 3-4 days a week
@@j.mach1133 I'm in the water about the same in mine, but I'm not as nice to it.. I try and hang it up every day, but sometimes it's in the sun, sometimes it gets rinsed, sometimes not... zion suits are shit, I got one last year, utter garbage
No Hurley 🙄
1:26 gross, I HATE seams in weird places
like a cut on roof of your mouth
Lame, non of this matters till you try a Buell
Whatever you buy just don't buy O'Neill wetsuit. The shittiest wetsuit I had. A couple of months ago I bought 4:3. I paid something around 400€ and already there are teras and cracks on seams. It's not that flexible anymore. The chest zip sitem, comperd to Ripcurl, is shit and restraining. Just stay away.
None of these are even close to Japanese suits
Review them after 6 or 12 months of surfing. Reviewing a new suit is absolutely pointless.
Please don’t litter your wetsuits on Jalapa Ranch Rd
4x3...LoL, Try 5/4/3...6/5/4...?
water bottle into the ice bath really?
