I keep a house rule where you have to get punished by the barking kittens, you can EITHER trade half of your deck or defuse. Much more fun imo
Love it that you make the cards’ abilities interchangeable! It almost gives them a “wild” effect, which is something that’s typically missing from the EK world.

If I had both sets, and shuffled the original Barking Kittens with the new ones. I’d play it so that whoever played the card, it’s the rule on their card. So I guess
1 has old Barking Kitten
2 has new Barking Kitten
3 has new Barking Kitten
3 decides to play their barking kitten so 1 and 2 both explode. But if 1 played the kitten then 1 gets half of their deck. That’s just how I would do it
That’s an awesome way to play them! It adds a lot of fun variety to the cards.
I got the barking kittens expansion last year and they say the old rules, so I'm sticking with that

I ordered the Barking Kittens expansion a couple of weeks ago (February 2024),
and the instructions still have the original text.
It’s interesting, because typically a “Second Edition” of a game or expansion will be made once the rules have been updated. That said, there’s no proof of an updated Barking Kittens having been released. Only the Recipes version has been updated, at least from what I know. Take care and thanks for commenting!
I have a question, you can lie having a barking kitten in your hand when someone calls for the other pair. How do you avoid this situation?
Great question! You have to play with trustworthy people. Personally, I won’t play games with someone that’s known to cheat, because it ruins the fun of the game. You could also make everyone pinky promise before the round starts, for the sake of accountability. Cheaters never last!
You could set the rule that whoever gets the barking kitten card, they must show and put face up. So there’s no point to keep them in hand and say lie. When next person draws another barking kitten, the first player is their target, simple!
I have the new one. I prefer it , but It would be cool if I had the original one.
It always pays to have the updated cards! Although it’s fun how the old one’s become somewhat of a collectible card, at least in my book.

That’s a great question! I really want to, but I’m waiting for the right moment to come along! It’s been such a great season of new games, Burglar’s become lost in the background. That said, it’s still on my list!

Why they updated the rule? The original rule was best; to steal half of someone else's card.
I guess they wanted to raise the stakes, but I totally agree with you. The OG Barking Kittens were better!
