荷花又名蓮花，古稱芙蓉，是多年生草本花卉。荷花在水中生活，種植在池塘或河流底部的淤泥，荷花被譽為「出淤泥而不染，濯清漣而不妖」。荷花一般由 5 月尾開始開花，荷花綻放，最大直徑可達 20 厘米，有多片花瓣，嵌生於花托內，花色有白色、黃色和粉紅色，每朶荷花開花三、四天後凋謝。
The lotus flower is an aquatic perennial. It comes in pink hues or white. The roots are implanted in the soil of a river or pond, and the leaves are above the water surface. The lotus flower blossoms in summer.

As mentioned previously, lotus flowers are mostly planted in the Mainland and are only brought to parks in Hong Kong for display when they are about to bloom.
Lotus flowers are mainly displayed in Shing Mun Valley Park, Fanling Hong Lok Park, Tsing Yi Park and Wetland Park. Lotus flowers are displayed in some parks, e.g. Lai Chi Kok Park but the amounts of flowers are small. So far we have not seen lotus flowers in Shatin Park.
In Hong Kong, there are also artificial lotus ponds in Wun Chuen Sin Kwoon, Lion's Nature Education Centre, etc. Natural lotus ponds can be found in Ho Sheung Heung, San Tin Village Road, etc.
