26:18 as far as i know it was actually jane austen that spelled it wrong lol edit: 40:38 i fully agree!! honestly, name one person who was 'cancelled' who actually suffered from the 'punishment'. no matter how hard someone is 'cancelled' they always remain relevant and just continue as they've been doing.
It disproportionately punishes small to mid-level creators/artists/whatever. Influencers with large followings/celebrities will just apologize and go on, possibly losing a few followers, but generally weathering it like any other small storm in a big pond. Small creators that are misinterpreted or actually misspeak are skewered, without the audience to absorb it -- whether or not they've actually done the thing. An artist I've followed was accused of inappropriate contact with a minor. It was patently false, and even the person who initially made the accusation said publicly that it was false. But by then, the cancel crew had dug claws into the story and literally forced him offline, and if anyone else mentioned him, the accusation would come up, but not the exoneration. Because he didn't have oceans of followers to drown out the cancelers, he's done. So it does actually stick, but only for people who are small enough to be unable to defend against it.
Mammoth will not disappoint! I preordered it months before the August release and quite literally skipped to meet the Amazon delivery agent, so my expectations were very high, and still, Eva Baltasar exceeded them. I can't wait for Sunset and Fascination :) Happy reading!
Hi Jack! I was also shocked when I saw the typo in 'Love & Freindship', but I researched and its actually done on purpose! These are collected short stories from Austen when she was younger, and she herself misspelt the word friendship when she was younger, so the publisher kept it. Like you said, it adds some character to it! Hope this helps :)
5 mins into the video, I went out of the video to comment this... can I just say you're pronunciation of the arabic "h" sound in Isabella Hammed and the name "hanin" IMPECCABLE 100/10 would recommend. I myself am an Arab and I know how hard the h is for non Arabs and you just said it amazingly and did not butcher the names!! well done.
OMG yes Samantha Shannon! You did absolutely the right thing buying both the books. I read them back to back this year and when I tell you they devoured me. Also, personally, day of fallen night >>> priory
Haha, so Jane Austen's Love and "Freindship" misspelling is intentional! Jane misspelled it when it was first published in 1790. This edition kept the misspelling as an homage to the original :)

I just bought a book advent calendar and I'm so excited to get it that I've started watching all of your book hauls. If you aren't doing one this year I would recommend it. I'm in Australia and get it from Bookgrocer, but if there is something like that where you live it would be so cool to see a video of your unboxing. BEWARE ALL: Please ensure to attach your bookshelves to walls, especially if you are pushing your books to the front of the shelves. I did not. It fell on my head. I have bruises all over my side. Anyway so excited for my advent calendar.
You should definitely read Anne Rice`s Interview with the Vampire. She wrote it after she lost her young daughter to leukemia, and was working through her grief, feelings of anger at her husband, and catholic guilt with faith and motherhood. It's a lot more complicated than a story about Vampires and questions of eternity. It touches on theme's of loss, memory, the monstrous, unreliable narrative, evil as a point of view, and more. IVWTV changed how vampires were written about and viewed as literary characters. A Feast of all Saints is another one of her best works. So is Servant of the Bones.
S E Hinton is another American writer you might like. She wrote her first published work, The Outsiders, at 14 or 15. The Outsiders is my favorite, and Tex is a close second.
@@nouspartimes i think TVA was really good too. Most people are put off by it because of its subject matter. But it does explain the complex PTSD he has, and his distrust and need for lying and control. Her vampires are more than sad and beautiful creatures, they are both heroes and villains, the human and monster, in their own story. There are some authors who are really good about making emotion a theme, and Anne Rice is one of them. Even though she has crazy shenanigans in her books, like vampire rock star, or going on an adventure with the devil, you're feeling all the feels.
I watched this video this morning then went to the bookstore. Almost immediately saw the “Before the coffee gets cold” books on a table full of Japanese fiction! There were 5 in all, all in hardcover. And they were on sale! Super excited to get into them. Thanks!!

I started the before the coffee gets cold series because of you and I loved it soooo much. Here in Germany I could already buy the green one in paperback it is one to look forward for. I heard there is also at least one more to come, it’s gonna be purple. Because of this series and your love for a little life made me trust your book taste so much and I found so many books because of that !
I really love Japanese books, especially "Before the coffee gets cold" series. I don’t mind the overexplaining the concept over and over again, mostly love the novelty of that. The Kamogawa food detectives is similar and I just felt in love with it.
Jack, thank you so much for the haul/recommendations! Thanks to you I just bought the whole "before the coffee gets cold" collection hahah ALL OF THEM! Even the 5th one! I've been building my dream library as well 🤩
I nearly commented on your dream bookshelf video saying that it scared me how packed your shelves were given your, erm, propensity to buying new books but I didn't want to give off any pessimistic vibes near something you were so proud of. This though. This is what I was scared of. Excited for your excitement though - it's my absolute dream to have a real life full library I just lack both space and funds haha
Love and Freindship is supposed to be spelt like that. It's not a typo. I remember thinking the same thing when I saw it in Waterstones once but I googled it and it's spelt the same way on Google.
Man I feel like you haven't sat down and talked about books like this for AGES and I knew I missed it but this made me realize just how much!!! Love and light to every other booktuber but man listening to you talk is just something else. Coincidentally I was devastated a few days ago to find out that you'd deleted your how to sound smart video, it kind of gave me an insight into how your mind worked and I loved that but I guess that would be a good reason to delete it 😂 also the absolute CULTURAL SHIFT that your inserting photos of the authors will cause, you just mark my words ❤️ all the love from Canada

So happy to see you reading Catalan literature!! You should check out Mercè Rodoreda's "Plaça del Diamant". It is set in the Spanish Civil War, about a woman's experiences in Barcelona during that time - very insightful and with topics of DV. Truly recommend it :)
I can’t find it in English 😭 Only in Catalan. I read Spanish but it’s not the same. I can of course tell what the words are, but I think it will take me out of the story.
"light, feathery fantasy" is a wonderful description of magical realism. I read ny first Murakami this year and really enjoyed it. I listened to After Dark, which has a 3.74 rating on goodreads, but it just felt so completely Japanese to me, I think that's why I loved it. I don't really know how else to explain it. That penguin classic that's misspelled might be worth some money some day. 😂
I love when someone loves a book I didn’t enjoy bc hearing them talk about what they love about it gives me a different perspective and actually makes me appreciate the book. All books deserve to be loved, even if it’s not by me 😅
I have been watching your content Jack and I would just like to say thank you. You inspired me to write my own book that I’ve been planning for a long time. I am only 16 years old and I am aware my book will not be one of the greats. However, I hope to use this experience to learn and publish something I am truly proud of in the future . One day, no matter if you like it or not, I hope you read Koi Fish in a Graveyard and know that I wouldn’t have wrote it if not for you.
Having read both Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night, I'd actually recommend reading A Day of Fallen Night First! It's a prequal to Priory of the Orange tree and I wish I had had the chance to read it first, it really develops the world before throwing you into the main act with Priory of the Orange tree!

Thanks Jack for always great recs on books I don't already own. And Def agrees with the ones I do. But where are you putting them 🤣📚❤️ It was also nice to see your room put together and now filming in it. ❤
I can't wait to hear your review of The Passion According to GH. You mentioned in another video that the words in Clarice are used kind of weirdly and that maybe in Portuguese, it could be different. It isn't. The words have a much broader meaning in Clarice's writing, and, as you said, you're summoned to immerse yourself in the book when reading her books. It's pretty magical. And this book is my favorite so far. It felt like some psychedelic trip that you just come out ineffably changed, like "What just happened, how did she do this". Highly, highly recommend it.
Amazing book haul! I cannot believe that typo on the Jane Austen set, that is actually shocking given how much art direction there had to be in making and approving that set. Regarding Patti Smith "Just Kids", I loved that book. I didn't see it as name dropping since it is a memoir and that was her life. At the time, those people were not the huge names they are today. One of the reasons it is so amazing is the fact that those people were all in that orbit and reading about the way they lived at the time.
If you're looking for a real depiction of life in Berlin when "the going got tough" then Alone in Berlin (also a Hoffmann translation) is a must!! Plus i know from an older video that you have the book already so all the more reason lol
Here’s the thing about war and peace - it’s genuinely such an enjoyable read. Yes it’s long as hell but it doesn’t drag. When reading it, it more just became part of my life, so that when I did finally finish it, it felt really jarring and confusing not to have any more left! I honestly missed it. My advice: let it not be a thing you have to plough through and get done, but rather a season of your life where you’re just hanging out with these characters in their world, and I think you’ll find in the end that the length is not a drawback 😊
I think your idea of working up to War and Peace is cool and I can't wait to see your progress. I'm focusing on doing reading projects myself instead of a random TBR.
12:54 This made go check my translated fiction. The only ones with the translator on the cover was from a small swedish publisher focused on translations BokförlagetTranan (all but one of them had it on the cover). As for the english ones, they where on the back or the tip-in of the cover. I never really noticed this before, so thanks.😊
I’m so excited for you to read You, Again. It got a lot of mixed reviews and I think part of that is because a lot of romance readers have a hard time with characters that are this messy and imperfect, which is way the book had lit-fic at times, which I loved. I do think going into it expecting a when Harry met Sally retelling doe a bit of disservice to the book, it is more “loosely inspired by” the move than a direct retelling. But I absolutely loved this book I read it at the end of 2023 and it was one of my favorites of the year.
Also you should have saved your money on the pumpkin spice cafe - I read it on kindle unlimited for free and even that was too expensive for that book 🤣🙈
Oh wow! While I wouldn’t exactly say this is aspirational because I think I would get so overwhelmed immediately lol, what I really enjoy about your channel that I get to see a wide variety of books and a lot of books that I haven’t actually heard of or authors I’m not familiar with. It’s a nice break from hearing the same 10 books and authors/genresI’m not really interested in over and over on things like booktok, so thank you for this at the very least for the exposure to a variety of works

Ah I am on a book buying ban while I work through my physical & kindle TBR so I can live vicariously through Jack 😂 think you need to buy another shelf unit though Jack, pop it on the end and move your plant across 😂
26:18 as far as i know it was actually jane austen that spelled it wrong lol
edit: 40:38 i fully agree!! honestly, name one person who was 'cancelled' who actually suffered from the 'punishment'. no matter how hard someone is 'cancelled' they always remain relevant and just continue as they've been doing.
Because the whole phenomenon of being cancelled is stupid in of itself. It's a chronically online thing to "cancel" someone.
A couple Authors who had the misfortune of displaying wrong think at the wrong time. Not that you would care.
This edition kept the misspelling as an homage to the original :)
there were parts of this video where i saw so many similarities between you and jordan, like your mannerisms, tone or phrases, its so cool too see how being around someone for a long time impacts us. especially that yall are my favs on yt. great vid as always, hope youre well!!
omg who’s jordan??
@ jordan theresa, i love her content
@ her channel looks so fun! will def check her out
@@leen34568 jack, jordan and eleanor neale (another content creator from london) are all friends and its sooo fun watching their content and knowing they all hang out together 🫠
@@leen34568 oh and i mentioned jordan because they recently moved in together and i can already see how their personalities start to influence each other
How can one reach the end of their TBR list?! Goddd it keeps on adding!!! but I love that you let your intrusive thoughts win😆❤
Exactly. Tbrs are never ending😭
I had no idea that was the context she wrote it in! ty for writing this
Thank you. It’s moving up my TBR!
I never finished IWTV, but I read and loved The Vampire Armand. Beautifully written
Thanks!!
14:46 Jack! I'm somewhat of a new viewer so im unsure if you've read her before, but Mieko Kawakami's work is EXCELLENT... EXCELLENT!!!
I cannot recommend her books enough she has such a way with words and truly knows how to put pen to paper. if you've yet to read any of her novels, i implore you to do so. Heaven is a great start as it's a shorter one - yes, it will make you cry
I loved listening to this!! It really opened my mind somehow
was supposed study for my exams which is tomorrow but hear i am watching a 55 min video
Same here, also reading books instead of reading for exams
I’m supposed to be sketching for a painting commission. Jack is more important.
literally same.
Jack, you are such a nice person. The way you approach the books and their themes shows what you stand for and who you are in real life, and that can only be a really wonderful man.
The priory of the orange tree is one of those books I can't stop thinking about. Samantha Shannon is a genius and that book is a masterpiece - can't wait for you to read it and hear what you think!
I have so many books my bookshelf is overflowing
Also jack: 😅
Check out his other channel! He does talk more about books there
I do follow his other channel!! I feel like there have been book hauls and what I'd like to reads, talking about SYNOPSES of books, but not thoughts ABOUT books in such a long time!!
@@aaaamnaaaa okay yeah valid!
2:11 as soon as u said that i was locked innnn!!
Same haha
saaame lol
I absolutely love the range of his recommendations
okay the way I gasped when you mentioned before the coffee gets cold! such a cute but bittersweet series, I need the newest book to come out in paperback bc I totally relate to needing the books to be uniform :)
also I could never buy my entire tbr because I would literally have to sell my soul to be able to afford that many books
I'm usually a silent viewer, but I wanted to pop in and say how much I appreciated you being open about cancel culture, and slightly venturing onto politics' discussion. Also, the disclaimer on these purchases were work related for you, and all reading is valid. YES!
Anyways, thank you for your content, your views and the work you put behind them from an argentinian viewer
So happy to see you reading Catalan literature!! You should check out Mercè Rodoreda's "Plaça del Diamant". It is set in the Spanish Civil War, about a woman's experiences in Barcelona during that time - very insightful and with topics of DV. Truly recommend it :)
And Irene Solà!
I can’t find it in English 😭 Only in Catalan. I read Spanish but it’s not the same. I can of course tell what the words are, but I think it will take me out of the story.
@ It’s usually translated as “The Time of the Doves”, “The Pigeon Girl”, or “In Diamond Square” :)
@@mauro78thank you so much!
I loved Plaça del Diamant so much!
34:49 thats not a stupid concept!! Thats a great idea 💡
All books deserve to be loved, even if it’s not by me 😅
i loved this! And I really appreciate that you picked so many books written by women! I really do
26:47 omg I love Irmgard Keun! So underrated! But my favorite by her is The Artificial Silk Girl
Patti Smith doesn't name drop. She recognizes and gives reverence to those who have impacted her life and work.
Pandora Sykes is a journalist who has written for major publications like the Gaurdian and she already has a book club.
And she was a 2022 judge for the Women’s Prize for fiction.
We read the Nickle Boys in my grad class and everyone adored the book. Our professor surprised us with a zoom call with him. We spent two hours talking about books, writing, and story telling. It was one of the coolest experiences I've had in my writing life.
Just popping in to say, buying every book on your TBR is CRAZY 😂🤣 unhinged!! I love it, we love to see it 📚📚📚
Hey, Brazilian reader here! Clarice is really one of our best! She's a literature pinacle. Brighter than the brightest, harder than the hardest. hahaha
I am dying to see the video where you read War and Peace. It is legitimately one of my favourite books of all time. Such a masterpiece. I have to reread it again some time.
Adding to my tbr list is an addiction I swear, and this is just fueling my addiction 🤤
This is what I’m here for, Jack Jack. I’m getting those same bookcases because of you. Ikea should sponsor you 😅
I really loved reading before the coffee gets cold. It was just so beautiful.
Freinship is spelt how Jane Austen spelt it on her manuscript! Frein in French (which she spoke really well) means brake/restraint and you just know that the queen of humour couldn't pass up the opportunity
as a catalan person, i was so excited to see eva baltasar come up first 🥺
Toni Morrison ❤️❤️🙏🏾 James Baldwin, Tell me how long the trains been gone, perfect title good book. Definitely looking up Soldier Sailor and all of Eva Baltasar.
I see many people have replied that the typo is not actually a typo. Good to know. I had no idea.
I love Ali Smith's writing! I am reading "Autumn" right now and it's so weirdly brilliant :)
Me too🙋🏻♀️
If you're looking for a real depiction of life in Berlin when "the going got tough" then Alone in Berlin (also a Hoffmann translation) is a must!! Plus i know from an older video that you have the book already so all the more reason lol
Every year a get to read the best books from this tbr videos from jack, amazing
Here’s the thing about war and peace - it’s genuinely such an enjoyable read. Yes it’s long as hell but it doesn’t drag. When reading it, it more just became part of my life, so that when I did finally finish it, it felt really jarring and confusing not to have any more left! I honestly missed it. My advice: let it not be a thing you have to plough through and get done, but rather a season of your life where you’re just hanging out with these characters in their world, and I think you’ll find in the end that the length is not a drawback 😊
Bro called me poor in 150 languages 😂
me: clicks on this video
also me, 0.1 seconds later: opens Goodreads and library account
55 min of book haul, what a treat 🤩
