I think this is the MH game for me. More casual and very story driven RPG. While I enjoyed playing Rise, I was never really that big of a MH fan. I'm glad MH stories exist. The 3DS game was pretty good as well and I think this is better

Honestly, I am so hyped for this game. Capcom has ironed out almost all of the issues I had with the first one.

Playing the demo got me hooked. I have MHS on 3Ds yet to complete. Field music makes me want to dance. Monster attack as less than random than original. I really want to get but on sale as I hoping to get SMTV in November.

Yeah monster hunter rise and resident evil village two of my favourite games this year
I think I might hate the combat system. There's just not enough control. You've got your "monstie" (which just means monster with a saddle), and you usually have a "battle buddy" and their monstie with you, but you can never control them. I thought that was just going to be for the first partner they give you as a tutorial but it's like that for the whole game. Monsters you fight have inherent weaknesses to weapon types (slash, pierce or blunt) and also their attack type (power, speed or technique) will greatly affect the damage done in return in the "head-to-head" matchups. Additionally, each monster may have an inherent elemental attack type (ice, fire, electric, dragon, water and "non-element") AND a weakness to a type. What's my point in all of this?
You will come across monsters that have weaknesses like: "this guy is weak to piercing speed attacks and fire", but then your battle buddy only uses sword (which is slash, not pierce), has no fire attacks and you can't control what type of attack he'll use. On top of all that, they usually refuse to target the same monster part as you. Oh yeah, and all of the monster parts have their own weaknesses, which again you have no control over how your partner attacks.
A nice little feature is the little symbols that appear over each monstie part that reveal its weapon weaknesses IF you've hit it with that weapon type before. For example: you hit this dragon's wings with a hammer before, and an arrow. The hammer was weak, so a red cross shows up on the hammer symbol. The arrow was strong, so the arrow symbol shines. Irritatingly, the weapon your battle buddy uses will never reveal if it's strong or weak, you'll have to waste your turn switching weapons and attacking yourself to find out. Then when you find out that weapon is weak, well too bad, you can't tell your battle buddy to switch out his weak weapon.
Most of the time there are 4 characters on your side of the battle, but you only control one and a half of them. You can only control your monster's moves if you're using a special move, otherwise they just decide themselves what attack to use. So they may consistently choose the wrong basic attack type and lose matchups.
The battle system simply has too many layers of complexity to leave three quarters of your team's actions to random chance, but that's what they did anyway. Imaging playing final fantasy 7 but you only control Cloud's actions in battle, and everyone else has the computer decide. Seems stupid, right? Well now add three layers of rock paper scissors complexity to that and you've got the battle system for MHS2:WOR.
I feel like each layer of the combat system works oddly well. Like particularly the fact that your monsters ai isnt perfect adds difficulty in that it doesnt mean i get double attacks every turn plus i also have to keep an eye on the kinship gauge since their independent actions dont take from the gauge.
Also with testing weapon affinities becoming more complicated when enemies start having 4-5 parts, it doesnt present too much of an issue since it starts to boil down more to common sense to me; mid game monsters will tend to have legs weak to swords, or monsters with large heads will have that part weak to hammers. It's worthwhile to to test a few combinations to find your go to part for each monster when there isnt too much variation in enemies in each area.

i would love a regular monster hunter game with actual storyline. so basically a combination of the two. that's one of the things i love about God eater series.
This game and the first one are legitimately tied for first in my favorite series. I adore this even if it’s not the mainline games. These are so much fun. I don’t have a “new” 3DS and for some reason the first game won’t play on my 3ds, I have 2 copies of the cartridge and downloaded from op the eshop and the hshop. I have 0 problems shelling out for an overpriced “new” 3ds just to be able to play the first one.
I spent money for all the extra dlc outfits. There’s nothing I won’t do for this game I swear. I just want to motivate the devs to keep this series going and make a 3rd.
I am loving the demo for the game. I wasn't planning on playing anymore RPGs anytime soon but this one really got my attention. I'd love the art style and the slow progression doesn't bother me at all, in fact I kind of need that in the game. I like all the parallels with the full monster Hunter franchise, that I find too difficult to play even though I really want to. I can really take my time with this game and enjoy a little grinding. I'm not sure how much time I can put into the demo, probably alot, but I think they sold me on buying the game. It's a really good game for it's target audience, which is probably women and children. Might be too easy or slow for the proper gamer, but they have the regular Monster Hunter games.

Man I feel like I grew up with this game, so hype!
PLayed the demo and one thing that kinda bugged me was the clunky movement and camera. The character moves at 2 speeds (fast as heck, and barely at all). The camera had no smoothing and would feel unnatural to with a joystick. It's as if they just took a PC version and mapped the keyboard to the controller in the laziest way.
Dunno if it's just me or if they improved it in the final version, but yeah.. not having fun with those chill village strolls.
I played the Demo, and I did like it, but I still have Rise to rank up more in, plus Skyward Sword releases next week, then the new Pokemon games will be here in 4 months. I'm just wondering if I can put the time into this game with the others I wanna play too.
Choose wisely and make a backlog for later but if the games you don't choose don't interest you later then you save a little cash and time.
@@thewonderblunder3421 skyward sword, sinnoh remakes, metroid, all must have for sure, and I know there should be time between there releases to play this game, but I dont get to play all the time cuz I have a job. So yeah, there's a choice to be made. I would like to play another Monster Hunter game because Rise got me into the series, but still, like i said, got a decide.
Stories 2 probably game of the year level after these early access reviews im convinced.

People who got early copies confirmed that isn’t true and it was a misprint. We may need to download a day one patch which is around 500mb.

Honestly for 60, I don't think it is. I don't know much about the game, but I'll wait for at least a 50% sale, considering every review of the game I saw tried to oversell the game (especially with the stupid cat dude character - I mean if that's the whole strong point of the game, then it truly ain't worth it).

Naming the Monsties based on looks or name was a great highlight for me in the trial. I called my Pukei-Pukei 'Sick Boy' for example.

@@starscream6629 I made some adjustments to make it a bit better, but I suppose I am very limited in the options. It's kinda annoying that it starts at a certain speed level and keeps accelerating.
I changed the camera settings. Make camera fast and move the gauge to around 75%. With those changes the camera was fine

How big is the open world?
All things considered this naviru is a godsend compared to the anime version of the character, in that one he’s got an ego, he doesn’t help but rather gets in the way all the time and has 2 annoying running gags one with an annoying “catch phrase” so yeah, go watch 2 or 3 episodes of the anime then come back to this and I can assure you, you’ll love this naviru
And he farted a lot on the anime as well due to the Rite of Channeling they did on him

@@raggedyexynos9487 even the DS version where the anime is inspired from he's nowhere near as annoying as the anime version, he was limited to navigation (which is literally where his name comes from) and telling you which egg was better.

Didn't play strikers yet but this game will definitely will give you hundred of hours. The base story is 50 to 60 hours and that is a quick playthrough. There are lots of end game content and free updates coming

Understandable the portability as well as this being more of a Switch game and not really taking advantage of the PC besides better framerate being the main factor.

Which would be a another good selling point for this game, possibly it's just not cross plat yet cause they are having problems or haven't figured it out yet but later will release a updated version with it. As excited as I am for Stories 2, I’m still a little peeved that I have to wait until September for Molty and Dreadking to arrive.
I like games with slow starting stories. It lets me settle into their worlds, and the gameplay loop for the rest of the game. To many video games rush to introduce the biggest plot points to players. Often leaving players hanging on to what plot points still exist through the rest of the game. It can really make a game feel like it’s dragging then.

I played the demo and had a good time but I left with mixed feelings. It's definitely a big improvement from the first game, specifically in the gameplay department because the combat in the first one was just bad. From what I played now there is a lot more strategizing and a lot less guessing. At one point the first game literally became a rock-paper-scissors game, where you analyzed a monster and you learned it was a power type for example, but it would go for speed and technical attacks just as often. That seems to be fixed this time around which is great. The addition of slash/blunt/pierce attributes makes it more fun and all the weapons also feel different from each other, while in the first game there weren't any major differences apart from the hunting horn. Now the gunlance has shells, the great sword and the hammer can actually charge up and attack and it feels great. I think co-op is great but PVP feels a little bit weird because it's literally rock-paper-scissors. The joy of combat in the campaign is to go around the monsters tendencies and predict what it will go for, but in multiplayer you're essentially just playing a guessing game and I'm not sure that will be any good.
I do have to say the framerate is a bigger issue than I initially thought. The fact that it dips in cutscenes speaks for itself, just by playing 5 hours of the demo I got quite annoyed. Another major complaint from me is the narrative. For me a traditional RPG needs to have a compelling story otherwise I'll end up getting bored, especially if the game is long. The first game was 30 or so hours to complete but it seems this one is longer, so the narrative needs to hold up and imo it just doesn't. The main reason for that is because one of the main premises is just based around hipocrisy. The duality between riders and hunters just doesn't make sense (not that it did in the first game). The riders talk about bonding with monsters but they're essentially enslaving them, stealing eggs from nests and using the "monsties" to kill other monsters. There is not any major difference from what the hunters do. Couple that with a weak main cast imo, with a silent protagonist that has little personality and a super annoying Navirou and it becomes a mixed bag for me. Ofc the plot itself can become very interesting down the line but I doubt it being a game, similarly to Pokemon, aimed at kids.

That has been proven false. There will be a 500mb day one patch. The full game is on the cart.

Been playing the demo and it's fun but the framerate is seriously bad at times, for that reason I'll pass for a few months and see if its patched.
Unfortunately the full game is the same but hopefully its turn based and the drops doesnt really affect gameplay too much, at least for me

Exactly what I’ve been saying. Pokémon is getting left behind by not reworking their entire formula. Have played Pokémon since I was a kid(I’m now 34) and Sword & Shield totally made me leave the franchise. I’m just done with Pokémon. So boring and tired of doing the exact same things.

@@danielmales123 c team. We have 3 teams now I believe although don't quote me on that but I'm pretty sure we have a console monster hunter team, a portable monster hunter team , and I believe we have a stories team. Hence why rise and stories updates are different
@tiggy wiggo wth, that's not what the reviewer said at all. He wants consistent frame rate not higher. 30 fps is fine just along it's consistent. No dips, no spikes. Just consistent

The demo almost lost me, but the ending was enough to solidify a purchase. 5 hours is a long time in a turn based game to get really into it but the payoff felt worth it.
I remember the 3DS game being really impressive looking.
It's a shame the game suffered the same technical issues Bravely Default 2 did.

I barely/hardly/rarely find any game to be worth a price tag of higher that $50 bucks. However, this is an amazing game(based off the 10 hours I have played in the dang demo) and would throw down $40 on it.
While the performance is inconsistent, this basically shows Pokemon Scarlet and Violet how lazy they are and how good one can make a semi-open world game look on the switch if used with a clear art style!
I just wish there was a hard mode. A bit too easy for having a varied complex combat system but pretty easy to win every fight. In my top 10 of 2021. Biomutant(I know but I had fun with) 8.legends of mana 9. Mario golf SR 10 EDF brothers HM Nier, pokemon snap. Don't have ps5 so limited releases this year.
Damn, this footage is actually from the Switch version? It looks stunning, and I thought Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Dragon Quest XI already looked pretty dang well for the console and a cartoony anime-like JRPG.
And then there's Pokémon Sword and Shield, let's look at them and laugh.

after playing the game for a few days I love it, the one thing I don't love so far is the story which suffers from a troupe in modern JRPGs that they should really retire: the silent costumisable MC, this was great in the 2d bit era when dialogue and story were rudimentary now modern gaming with writting that is comparable to anime and hollywood production the silent MC sticks out like a sore thumb, there are exceptions of course but personally it actually messes with the story immersion, I constantly heard other characters say stuff like "you look concern do your best!!!" and that's all it took for the guy to get over it, but the real victim of this approach is the rider of the first game, PEOPLE THAT WERE HIS/HER FRIENDS NOW BARELY MENTION THE GUY!!! EVEN NAVIRU!!! honeslty it's almost as if he was a minor character in his/her own story **minor spoiler ahead** for example Avinia states that the person that inspired her to trust everyone again was Debli, F*CKING DEBLI!!! not the rider that found her half frozen in a cave, help frostfang recover his powers and travelled with her, no the tub of lard gave him a 2 minute speech was the thing, I know why this happened it's because since it was also a costumizable character it would be very hard to implement him/her to the story, name, appearance, gender, all is hard to implement but c'mon is not impossible, games like the witcher 3 had clever ways around this, at the beginning of that game geralt is asked questions about the previous game and the story is different depending the answers, splatoon 2 straight up let's you redo your avatar from splatoon 1 in the octo expansion, so there are ways, so yea, great game but personally it suffers from a very arcaic practice in videogame story telling that should be retired already.
