While most of the time you probably see me eating food, I've been receiving a lot of questions lately asking me who exactly I am, how I started traveling, why I love eating so much, and how I earn a living. So in this video I'm going to quickly explain how and where I grew up.
I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in the USA in 1986. My mother is from Hawaii, and she's Chinese, so I'm half Chinese. Visiting Hawaii, where food is a huge part of the culture, is where I first became so obsessed with all things food. My grandfather was a Chinese chef, so food has been a big part of my family.
My parents are Christian missionaries, so when I was 5 years old, we moved to France for a year. I attended my first year of school in France. We then moved to DR Congo, which was then known as Zaire. We lived in the middle of the jungle and as a kid I would run around exploring and eating interesting and rather bizarre jungle creatures. Due to war in Zaire, we moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where I attended a Christian international school for 8 years until graduating from high school. After high school I went back to Arizona and attended Arizona State University for 4 years, graduating with a degree in global studies.
After graduating, I didn't want to just get a job, so I started traveling again. I traveled in South America and then went to Asia where I finally got a job teaching English for a year. During that year though, I decided not to ever teach again but to do everything I could to make it as a freelancer on the internet and be able to have freedom to travel (and eat). It was in Thailand that I met my girlfriend, who is now my wife, so I am married!
This brings us up to now. For a living I do a combination of selling my own ebooks, freelance writing, making videos, and all sorts of other random projects like SEO and social media marketing.

Glad to hear that your parents are missionaries. You are a super nice person. I am an Indian born and brought up in Kerala.
You have to have the right upbringing to live the life Mark has. Being christian missionaries, his parents took him all over the world and let him be free. Playing in the jungle, with animals and many different people. He was properly socialized, that leads to strong confidence in himself and no sense of restrictions and limitations as his life was so free. For him to decide to quit his job as a teacher and travel the world eating food for a living is nice to think of but to actually accomplish it is for a certain type of person. Confident, no fear, strong self esteem and perception of self and truly not caring what others think. You must have all those things to do what he does, not just one or two but all.
The Lord has blessed you to be the most successful, famous and outstanding food TH-camr. God bless you and praise God for blessing you with such a humble attitude!

Hello, Mark and Ying : I have been watching your videos for over a year now and enjoy every bit of your videos. Watching you eat the food and making the comments that you do makes me feel as though I am sitting right there enjoying the meals with you. I especially enjoy watching Micah making his faces at the different foods that you introduce him to. It would be nice if you would allow Ying to make comments about the food from time to time. I see her eating and making smiles at the food that she is enjoying but it would be nice to see her comments also. I am 70 years old and traveled throughout the USA with my Husband for 46 years seeing some spots in Mexico and Canada but never made it to any other Countries and your show gives me the opportunity to see the rest of the world. My name is Joe Jadick and I currently live in Florence on the Central Oregon Coast (not Italy). Prior to that I grew up in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from the UW. For most of my working life, I was in San Diego, California, and got my MBA at SDSU.
My mother was of German descent and I was able to visit her family twice; once in 1964 and once again in 2014. Most people there didn't know who I was on my second trip except for my cousin-in law who greeted me like I was just returning from getting a bottle of wine (after 50 years!!).
As you can imagine, I most enjoy your episodes featuring German, Swiss, and Austrian cooking.

Hey Mark I love your videos. I’m from western Massachusetts. I’ve always loved Asian cuisine since I was little. But it wasn’t until I met my boyfriend (who is Taiwanese) that I have really got to taste the more traditional foods. Ohhh boy. So we watch a lot of your videos and drool! You have inspired me to broaden my horizons when it comes to food and my tastebuds thank you for it (prob not my stomach and clothes though! 😂) I love Doro wat and it is because I got to watch how they make it on one of your videos and so because I know what they put in it it made me want to try it. A friend and I now have monthly catch ups at an Ethiopian restaurant because of your video 😊 Thankfully, Melbourne is a melting pot of different cultures and cuisines so we are spoilt for choice but I’m still looking for some Ghanaian palm nut soup and fufu.
