This is a very useful video for those of us with a C 400 GT and the BMW luggage rack, and I had initially based my installation of a Shad 59X on it, and I thank HedOpp for making it. However, there's a problem if you ever want to carry a passenger: the depicted installation will put the Shad's backrest pads about 3" (c. 75mm) forward of where the backrest pad on the BMW top case puts the passenger. This is not enough room unless your passenger is very skinny. I moved the Shad's base plate about 3" rearward from what's shown in this video, and did wind up drilling two holes in the (very tough, very thick) BMW luggage rack. I have a detailed series of pics and captions in my C 400 GT gallery, but of course I can't post a link in a comment. Hello, I've installed it yesterday on my C400gt. Everything is fine. The silver support is the BMW OEM, not the Shad one. The shad one is black and it's a little bigger so you can open the seat with the seat pads etc... Very easy to install BTW, i did it alone in few minutes (and I'm clearly not a professional). Ps: I highly suggest this topcase it has a great look, quiet and has a large room. Best regards from Switzerland 🇨🇭

Hi! No drilling is necessary. I have mounted the backrest after I posted the video. It's really easy to install. Yes, the base plate comes with the box.

Hi I know this was posted a few years ago but I’ve just bought a C400GT and getting the BMW rack fitted this week. I’ve ordered the same Shad box, the BMW is too small and too expensive but on the rack are there spaces for the rear bolts or did you need to drill anywhere to fit? Thanks

Hi thank you for the video. I have purchased the same top box but sometimes find it hard to clip the red holder when set at the highest position. I lift the cover to the max but it is not enough to allow me to push the red clip. Sometimes it works and some other times I struggle. Does ist happen to you too?
Yes, it happens to me too. It was like that since new. I find that if I lift the cover by holding one hand in the center between the lid hinges and lift it up it up with determination and some force, it will align on both sides. That works for me anyway. That is actually the only thing that annoys me with this box. Good luck!
I'm very happy with this top case. I'm impressed with the capacity and how well it suits the scooter. I bought the black top colour just because it matches my scooter colour very well. The Shad SH58X came with carbon top colour, and I think that would work with any of BMW C400 colours for most people.
Thanks for your replay. I mean handle in your c400gt is silver in my future c400gt is black and really different. Where You bought this silver handle? I want to make the same.
The difference is that the sh59 has an aluminium lid cover. Otherwise it's the same. In my opinion it doesn't look too big. I rather think it suits the scooter. I'm really happy with it and highly recommend it.
Ole M Worren thanK you for kind reply. I’m in Australia and this is the worst place to buy things for bmw scooter cuz there’s only few c400 scooter so they don’t import the fitting rack. Takes about several month to order. I might just buy the shad fitting rack from China and have it ship to Australia maybe a lit bit more on the delivery cost. One more question when u install the bmw rack did u remove the storage from inside I tried the other day unscrewed some star screws but can’t take it out. But You can take the handle bar out when the storage is loose. Sry for my poor English

@@tropheuz I have driven it for three years now, and it hasn't been necessary to tighten on nuts. I have used o and a dab of blue loctite.
So is the SHAD rack a better option than the BMW genuine one? I want to be able open the seat with the case on the rack.
I wouldn't say that. It's no problem opening the seat even if you got the backrest cushion mounted on the box with my configuration.

There is no need for drilling. The only thing you need is longer bolts than those that come with the box. I hope it works out for you.

I think 6mm will do. As for the Ram mount, it's a 9mm with a 1” ball. Good luck.

Yes, they did. There was bolts too, but they are to short for this setup.

I'm very happy with this top case. I'm impressed with the capacity and how well it suits the scooter. I bought the black top colour just because it matches my scooter colour very well. Sorry, I misunderstood you. The luggage carrier is a original accessory from BMW. Bought it from my local dealer.

Yes, I'm very happy with the scooter. No serious issues so far. To bad winter is coming her in Norway. The season is all to short.
Final question: is the box quiet ? It doesn’t rattle, does it ? I once had an after market box and I found it was rattling
I haven't experienced any rattle loaded or empty.

Yes, you can attach it to the BMW luggage carrier. That's what I have done.
Can you install lights for the back of that top case?
The box is not prepared for light installation as far as I can see. If you're handy, I guess it's possible 🙂
Do you know if Saddlebags can be installed to the C400GT?
I haven't seen anything that can fit the C400GT yet.

The difference is that the sh59 has an aluminium lid cover. Otherwise it's the same. In my opinion it doesn't look too big. I rather think it suits the scooter. I'm really happy with it and highly recommend it.
