It is a tie with Paper (Monopoly) Money so I think you're right.
Though Monopoly is more of a Cthulian Zombie at this point - it just won't die.

"Shoot the moon" is a great name to replace "non traditional." Love that style of scoring, especially if it's tied in with Secret Points and (Secret!) Personal Goals. I like the suspense of seeing _some_ points on the board, but then there's the delight of knowing that you have some more secret points of your own that could turn the tide in your favor!

My favorite win condition is beat the big baddie. A lot of co-op games have a big boss monster or something of that nature at the end of the scenario.

I love the non-traditional win cons in Magic: The Gathering. You usually win by depleting your opponent's life or milling their decks, but every now and then there comes a card that let you win through very different conditions, like controlling many artifacts, or by milling yourself, or by casting a specific card twice in a match. Then, suddenly, you're making a crazy deck just to see if that's actually viable.
Ascension has some cards that work like that too, I think PRIME Directive lets you win by controlling 8 or more Mechana Constructs.

My favorite will always be the "single thematic event". It is similar to the racing mechanic but broader. The resolution of a scenario goal, be the first to get to the treasure, kill the necromancer, cure the diseases etc.

I'll tell you the most useless one: Victory Point Spreadsheet(ing) - where you just have to do a lot of calculus at the end of the game, taking you completely out of the theme, and then it appears that, oh, player X won...on points. Big deal. No one cares at that point anymore.

  • @NickGotch

I like games where you win by having to balance different things. Tigris & Euphrates you win by having the most points in your lowest scoring color. Wendake you win by summing your two lowest scores on two different tracks. The Great Dinosaur Rush you win by having the most points BUT the person with the most notoriety subtracts their notoriety from their score while everyone else adds theirs. High Society you need the most item points but not have the least money. These kinds of balance I find really make a game interesting.

    My favs are:
Pax Renaissance - players get to CHOOSE which vitory condition to apply among 4, but you never know when or if you'll be able to choose the one you feel to be nearest to! And the game is so complex and intertwined that often the winner gets the victory on a completely overlooked condition, he just triggers it and says I F****NG WON! with everyone else at at the table staring at the map in disbelief.
LOTR Confrontation - you never know until the end. The shadow player could have slaughtered the entire fellowship, doesn't matter, until Frodo is alive and kicking there's alwaws a chance. It often feels like a football touchdown.

I really like non-traditional/ shoot the moon that is why I always liked the L5R card game, win by destroying their stronghold, but you can also get enough honor to win or make your opponent run out of honor.

My favorite win condition in any game- Sid Meier's Civilization. Multiple victory conditions.4 Different types of victory (Military victory, Economic, Technology, and Culture.) Really interesting and thematic to the different types of growth in a civilization.

I'll echo the comments about the fun of Shoot The Moon victories. In some ways its similar to number 10, hidden points, because it keeps the game exciting till the very end. The Star Realms expansion that added secret objectives is one of my favorites because of the chance of pulling off that surprise ending.
