- A Kenwood Eleven III stereo receiver repair and restoration video. This vintage 2 channel audio classic produced in 1977 was found in a Florida attic. This Kenwood Eleven III receiver is the perfect example of vintage audio toughness. It was left to rot but after some work it's ready to make music. In this video I clean the decades of dirt and grime from this vintage Kenwood Eleven III receiver along with repairing two intermittent problems. The Kenwood Eleven III features both a timer and automatic speaker impedance detector.

Nice job. I was just gifted by mother, his KR-10000 III, Reel to Reel, 8 Track player/recorder and turntable that my father purchases all in 1977 while we were stationed in Spain
My Pioneer SA 9100 is in the hospital for some restoration work and I pray when she comes back from surgery she'll be as pristine as your Kenwood Eleven lll, I've had her since she was born, you've done a wondeful job on that Kenwood to bring it back to life.

I purchased new an Eleven II in 1977 and had what i later learned was the typical problem-the timer shaft fracturing. I hot wired around it so that it would at least work. I did that probably in the early 1980s. In 2021 I discovered a guy on eBay making with his 3D printer the replacement timer shafts. It wasn’t too hard to fix. Disassembly and reassembly is fairly straightforward. I reversed my hot wiring job, installed the new much better shaft, and voila! Working again. I’ll have to perhaps get serious about replacing some capacitors I expect at some point. I will have to hook it up to my JBLs and see how it is holding up. The tuning process is a little scratchy-typical, too, for older gear. I will have to learn where to concentrate my attention! And yes, I still have the original box! Your video gives us all the encouragement to keep our old stuff alive by doing a little work on them. Clearly, these things are certainly better made then so much of the stuff today.
Thanks a lot for sharing. It's great that you still have your receiver from years ago. I'll have to check out eBay and the timer shaft as this one is broken also. Yes, this vintage equipment was built to last. Most of the modern electronics when it breaks you toss it in the garbage.
I have the same receiver. I bought it in 1977 in Okinawa Japan while stationed there. Still own it. Have it set up in my basement hooked to 4 Bose speakers. Love to have it restored some day.

Love this, found one at a thrift store for 30$, absolutely amazing! In those days i had "bass " friends who had thier cars ultra bassD out, this Kenwood can run 4 4ohm loads, lol i had 4 MTX 8000 ON THIS BABY

Good to see old vintage gear become new again. I just bought a new Onkyo receiver but I wish I still had my Sansui I bought in Germany back in the early 70s. That baby would rock. Nice clean audio into Kenwood speakers. Funny I can't remember the model number but in 1972 it was the biggest 4 channel unit Sansui made. With the help of a friend we hand carried that monster speakers and all from Frankfurt back to my military location at Butzbach. 4 trips in all. We were so determined then. Great video !!

Stunning Rebuild! I have a KR-9340 QUAD 4 x 50W Receiver given to me in the 90's, and it got a little wet in a trailer was the story. Missing the CD4 Phono module, but complete and I used it for TV sound with 2 original Dynaco A-25's. You can see the excellent voltage regulation, when cranking into these 4-5 ohm Danish speakers, from the dial lights and STRONG low end. I had some crackling and intermittent on one of the front channels, a baed edge or other connector and some leaky cap or corroded leads transistor like my SX-1010 has are often suspect. I was an Service Tech in the 70's in NJ at Lafayette Radio and then Acrosound Service Labs where I got my Pioneer in 1974 for $470 Employee Cost!!!. Also into Ham Radio and have the Kenwoof RX-599/TX-599 Twins, and rebuilt and 10X recapped the audio and feed into a B&O S-45 Phase Link speaker directly; makes Ham AM and Wide Band SSB sound great, with 3 different 8-pole Crystal Filters and a Kenwood heavy VFO tuning dial that can SPIN from end to end, 600KHz range because it has a clock-like gearing precision. SORRY getting Off track, but I wanted to counter another Stereo TH-camr who just dumped on Kenwood & Technics! My point is BOTH Kenwood and Pioneer made great equipment. I was the luckiest guy to be PAID to work on these beauties in HS and College vacations and Holiday seasons.

Thanks for the great history on Kenwood and the Model Eleven III. I just found me a Model Eleven II this week for sale in Houston and bought it from this nice gentleman that restores old HiFi equipment from the 70's. The receiver is in great condition and it was completely gone through and sounds awesome. I too had never seen a receiver with a timer to automatically shut it off after so much time. I don't know if I like it but interesting to say the least. Anyways, would like to hear your assessment of the Model Eleven and its sound. I really think it has a great warm tone and has plenty of power to run my old RTR three way towers with two ten inch woofers with ease. I am glad I bought it.

I bought this receiver back in 1977 in Yokosuka Japan at the base exchange, along with Sansui speakers and other items. I loved it so much but I finally gave everything to my brother.
Got mine in early 1978 at the Guam (Andersen AFB) exchange. Finally got rid of it by leaving it behind on my last move in June of '20. Had the Kenwood Triple 5 speakers, Kenwood turntable and cassette deck. What an awesome receiver.
I have my 7100 integrated amp and 7300 tuner I bought in 1978 still running strong. Beautiful sound and have never failed to power up and get things going!
That's great! The equipment then was engineered and built to last. I'm so glad to have some of my audio equipment from my teen years in the 70's also.

Thank you very much. Your Nine G is a very nice receiver. If the sound comes and goes it's a good bet the controls need to be cleaned with deoxit. I'd try that first to see if that solves your issue.

I remember a friend of mine had Trio hi Fi and remember the shop in South Croydon
a suburb of London. He had two tube mono block amps then later added a solid -
state stereo amp the two mono blocks driving two rear speakers. It was an awesome
setup. He had a Gerard 401 turntable with an SME Arm Sure M75 E cartridge.
It’s funny where I live SME are just a short drive for me in West Sussex England.
Also Kenwood were one of the well known hifi brands over here. Great video by

This equipment brings back so many good memories for most people. Where I lived here in the USA it was not impossible but difficult to find a Kenwood dealer. Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz all over the place. I find it interesting that in the UK Kenwood was a major brand. So much great gear was produced by all of the companies. I guess it must of been all about the distributors in the different countries.

My vintage Kenwood found a partially blown tweeter...shut down that pair. Took me a while to figure out it was a mismatched ohms. Smart reciever.

Every time I run across the really cool looking receivers like this, with all the cool lights and meters, be it at a thrift store or antique market, even if it's in terrible shape, people still charge an arm and a leg for them.
The last few years the vintage audio equipment has gone up in price.

Great video and wonderful history lesson as well! I recently acquired a KR-8010 that I am looking forward to cleaning up. It is fully functional already but she does need some TLC. With it, I acquired a KX-1030 cassette deck. It is not currently functioning but I hope to fix it as I go along.
Florida is a terrible place not only for electronic components. Kenwood definitely makes a very durable unit. Same thing with Sansui. I have two Sansui receivers, one is the 3900 Z and the other is a 5900 Z. It seems there was a issue with the power switches in the Z models. I’m currently on the hunt for two new power switches for my Sansui’s but they’re pretty hard to come by. They’re both still operating but the switches could use a replacement.

I run my Eleven iii with a pair of Technics SB-2766 (12 inch) on A, a pair of SB-2744 (10 inch) on B. Looking for a set of 2722 (8 inch) to finish the set. This reciever makes the Technics outperform anything I've ever tried. Even HPM. The 2766 were starving on the amp they were originally sold with.

It was my first "real" stereo receiver I got when I was around 14. You have inspired me to get it out and get it back up and going again. I just picked up a minty Kenwood Eleven GX , Only issue was when i switched the FM to Dolby FM and i would loose a channel . If i tapped on unit the channel would come back on... After probing around i narrowed it down to the F.M. DE- EMPHASIS switch on the back... Cleaned it up , and is now working 100% And the timer works also and orig lamps...
Good Job! A lot of this older equipment just needs a little TLC to keep running.
@@vintageaudioaddict My Eleven GX unit seems to run hot , even the vent grill on top has come loose on the case which i think could of been from heat.... Searching on here and other post on what i may look for . Bias adjustment ??
I have that exact Kenwood KA-3500 integrated amp that I bought new in 79, along with the KT-5500 tuner. It's been my main amp since then and other than cleaning the pots every few years with some deoxit, never had an issue. Built like a tank and sounds great. Every once in a while I think I should upgrade, but then I think "why bother", although if I could get my hands on a Kenwood 600 Supreme for cheap, I might pull the trigger.
Congrats on having your equipment for all of these years. Kenwood made really good audio equipment back in the day. Your happy with your setup so unless your a collector like me, as you said why bother.
@@vintageaudioaddict I don't have room to be a collector, ha. One thing I learned a long time ago, is that the really important part of a system is the speakers. Over the years I've replaced and upgraded, and now run some Totem Dreamcatchers that are really great. Also for playback I use a hot-rodded Rega P2 so that helps.
In the UK a Company called Thorn Electrical Appliances made a food mixer with an international know brand of high end food processors called "kenwood".
They protected the International brand name furiously.

I understand the reasons for replacing the Capacitors, but you made no mention that you would be replacing the Transistors on this unit. What is the reason one needs to or does not need to replace Transistors. I've been watching for a few months now and have some equipment that I bought as Wedding Gift to give to my niece and her husband. I also have my own equipment that I will need to replace the Cap's on. Perhaps a video on how to read the info on the Cap's and Transistors and who you like to buy these items from? Thanks! First of thank you for your kind words and for watching. Every piece of equipment is different to some extent. Every old electrolytic capacitor needs to be replaced, no matter if it's in a Mark Levinson or a Sounddesign. Transistors, diodes, relays are changed when there has been a track record of failure. You have to do your own research via the internet on any particular model. You will also get different opinions. I have done several different videos that may help answer some of your questions. Dear@@vintageaudioaddict, Thank-you for the time that you took to reply back to Me and with all of the Links that You took the time to provide! Yes, everyone has their own opinions, but when reading or listening to some of them on any given subject... I went to school and worked as an Auto Mechanic for many years, but no longer earn my living repairing cars. The worst problems to find are those that are intermittent on pretty much anything. Pretty much no one is making any money making TH-cam Videos. You are trying to do something positive for the next generation or so, but at some point in time this wonderful time when things were made with people sitting at a bench and assembling things will fall by the wayside. Not everything, but almost everything made today can not be repaired. If it can be repaired it will most likely cost more to do so than a new whatever will cost to buy new. And that is if you do the the work yourself. Never mind paying someone to repair it for you. You were kind enough to take the time to leave some Links for me and I will now do so for You. Thank you as always. Kenwood even had open reel and cassette calibration tapes available for purchase to help with the setup of a tape deck with the eleven III.
I have a Kenwood model Nine G that looks close to that but the power meters are in the left upper corner. Now one of my buddies had did something and I had to have the power supply repaired and one of the channels and the guy have put some newer age parts in there and it doesn't sound quite like the older stuff so one side sounds louder than the other. I know it needs a good cleaning because because some of the parts and switches make popping and cracking noises but it goes away after you play with them for a while..

You are so correct. JVC and Kenwood made excellent audio equipment back in the day. You could throw in a lot of other manufacturers also. It was just a different time when electronics were made to last.

I have the Model 11G. Everything works including the timer. But sounds meh. I realize the caps need to go. But this monster is complicated. The M.A.C. is a weird feature. I seem to lose a channel when it is selected.

Do you own or have worked on an Accuphase E202 integrated amp? I spent some time completely going through one, the end result was one of the best sounding integrated amps I have ever heard. I really enjoyed rebuilding mine, plug and play boards.
Thanks so much for keeping her going. No, I haven't. Accuphase was/is great gear. There was so much wonderful audio equipment back in the day. Hopefully some day I can add a piece of Accuphase to my collection.
Accuphase was started by an engineer from Kenwood back in the 70's. They are really high end audio, and even older units are still worth a lot.

I have never owned a solid state Fisher so I can't really say but I do have two vacuum tube Fisher's, a 800-C and 400 receivers and they are wonderful.

Opinion on Kenwood ka-8006 .
Kenwood made a lot of great audio equipment and the KA-8006 is one of them. I'd grab one for my collection in a minute.
Tell us what's the difference between that Model and the KR? Only thing I figured out was the Model was the silver face with the wood case and the KR was a gray face with a metal BLK case but the internals was the Sam
They both were really well built. I really not sure all the differences as they were both designed around the same time.
What did the timer do? - as you said, odd to have one on a receiver. I was looking forward to some tuning and analog meter action but all we got was a looping, left/right sweep of viewing it lit-up with it not doing anything ☹️

Hi there from spain, I have just plug my old kenwood eleven and I'm. Having some issues with the aux input. Is the sound level different with your aux input than with your phone1 one? When I connect an input in my aux, it sounds very low and weak. Thanks for your time!

I just got the same beautiful unit Eleven III, all work fine just have a single issue that if turn few of the front buttons, right or left channel sound very low but then if touch any buttons the sound came back. Any clue how to fix that?

Hello, I have my Kenwood Model 9G that I bought in 1979. I see everyone replaces the capacitors during a rebuild. My receiver still sounds good to me (except for the dirty pots). Why do people replace the capacitors? Is there a sound difference between my original capacitors and if I heard things after they were replaced? Thanks. Rick

I have a Kenwood Nine G, it belongs to the family of the Elevens, also has the timer. I got it over 10 yrs ago and ended up putting it in storage, never had extra room to set it up. The guy I got it from said these were only available overseas to our servicemen and women and that’s the reason they came with the timers. Is there truth to that? I have not a clue but the guy said that was his situation of getting it and brought it home when he was done his service.
I have a model eleven that has the same problem. Sound shuts off then comes back on. I'll look at that relay. Thanks

From what I've heard this receiver was manufactured in 1977. I'm not sure if you can figure the exact date from the serial number or not.
There should be a manfacturing date on the back of the unit with a label saying the date it was built

I just found a II thats played great, UGH I broke the timer,,,, it played for about an hour.
can you twist it back to reset and the unit will turn on ? I thought I read that somewhere ,
if not I guess I have to cut the 2 wires, whats the best way to do that....

My timer is also broken on my 10000 iii which is effectively the same as this unit. I found a guy on ebay who 3-d prints the plastic coupler. If you wanted to keep the timer function go that route. If you want it to play without the timer just snip the two wires and connect them together like mine is bypassing the timer function.
I think those are your only two options as there is nothing turning the timer without that plastic piece connecting.
@@cuttinthroats I fixed it , well I rigged it up !! LoL . I opened it up and turned it over and took the bottom off. I could spin up the timer pretty easy from the bottom side. I spun it up al the way, and took a little tie strap and locked it the timer wide open, been going strong ever since . I just didn't want to cut the wires.

My Marantz 2285b quit making any sound from either spkr A or B outputs. Unit powers on and off no problem. Protection circuit still pings. FM meters show receiver has signal lvl and lock, but zero sound after multiple speaker connects and disconnects. Any ideas?
I'm sorry about 2285b. It's really hard to say. With it being 40+ years old it could be a number of things. I'd google "vintage audio repair" and see if anyone pops up in your area that could take a look.

Dolby was/is all about reducing noise. Dolby FM was something that never took off so that didn't last long. All the tape decks had their own Dolby built in so no need for it to be in a receiver like this Kenwood Eleven III.
Thanks I guess mine is a 77 as well. One issue I do have with this receiver is when I switch media from Phono to Aux the all I heart is FM tuner sound in source. But when I have tape deck connected via REC/play inputs then I can switch ok from Phono to AUX but thru the cassette tape deck monitor. I used to be able to switch the input source it via the selector now it only switches when I have a tape monitor connected. Any ideas?
Your welcome and thanks for watching. I don't know off hand what the issue would be but have you unhooked your tape decks along with your other devices, turntable, CD etc. and then hooked them up again recently? You can get some unusual symptoms if something gets crossed up, tape rec/play etc.

Hey man I have the exact same receiver. I need the volume potentiometer and I cannot find it anywhere: R11-9005-05 Variable resistor 100k ohm(B) x 2, 200k ohm(W), Volume, Balance. Would you know anywhere I could find it? Im desperate at this point.
I would checkout eBay. Sometimes you can find folks who are parting out vintage stereo equipment.
