I have the honor of knowing Adrian. A humble and unassuming English gentleman. When people who first meet him hear his playing later on, their minds are blown. In passing, he's Clark Kent. When you put an ax in his hands, he becomes Superman.

Adrian Legg! Fil, yet another great analysis this morning. Mr. Legg makes this look so easy, yet it’s so very difficult! I like your comment of this song being a journey. Very appropriate, Fil. A great song is just that...

What a coincidence that you have Adrian on tonight. I went to a little Open Mic session at a place called Tobias Music in Downers Grove Illinois a few weeks ago and they told me that Adrian was coming on November 3rd this weekend for a little concert Clinic. A few hours ago I got a reminder on Facebook about it so I'm definitely going. Another great video my friend. Thank You.

When I was in my early 20's and thinking all the fast picking metal guys were THE GREATEST , I happened to catch a documentary about the guitar on PBS. They were showing some guys that were ... pretty good but stuff that I had heard before and didn't really phase me. Then , about 2/3's the way through , they showed a clip of Adrian playing " Midwest Sunday" and I swear to you I LITERALLY considered quitting the guitar on the spot. If you haven't watched what he does on this song , WATCH IT ! To this day it's one of the most insane things I've EVER seen anyone do on the instrument. He is the perfect storm of technique , taste, and tone.

So glad you did this video. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Adrian at least a dozen times. He comes to the states every November. He rents a car and drives across the country doing a varied mix of concert venues and coffee shops. I’ve seen him perform in all kinds of places. I saw him in the first G3. And I’ve seen him in a coffee shop in Duluth, Minnesota with 30 people. Not only is he an amazing guitarist, he’s a delightful story teller. He spends as much time telling stories as he does playing guitar. He’s got a great, dry, British wit!!!!

The second I saw him walk onstage I already knew who he was, but I didn't expect to hear him playing that night. I've seen him several times since. Delightfully droll sense of humor, and serious guitar chops.

Fil, - years ago I was having a chat with Adrian at a Manchester club he was playing, Band on the Wall, a magnet for guitar masters back in the day, met a lot of the greats there, Herb Ellis, Louis Stewart, Stefan Grossman etc, - anyway Adrian was having a drink at the bar, I'd had to quit drinking by then, - it's no secret Adrian has quit since, but the convo got to the columb he used to write in a guitar mag in the late seventies early eighties after he won a contest for the mag, the prize was a Harmony Sovereign guitar. At that time he was playing pretty much straight acoustic before switching to electro-acoustic, - he'd reviewed an album by tonights feature player, Merle Travis which on the liner notes mentioned it was cut totally solo with no over-dubs. Adrian wrote in his review there was a bass player on Bicycle Built For Two, - not so, it was his thumb, but Adrian did admit he'd written the article a little worse for wear ;) Nice guy, and he's never stopped improving his playing, really admire his work ethic.

Back in the early 90's I was driving around and heard this song on CBC radio where I've been introduced to many great artists. Shortly after he was in Vancouver for a guitar clinic at a local music store where me and a dozen-odd guitar heads were treated to a private concert with the man himself. He rubbed his hands with talcum powder first so when he played there appeared to be smoke coming off the guitar, which isn't far from the truth! Been a fan ever since and just this past week returned to a few of his tunes I've been trying to learn over the years (this isn't one of them), so what a pleasant surprise to see it featured here. Thanks Fil!

Somebody else mentioned it below, but it's worth mentioning again. If you think this song, Chicken Lickin's Last Ride, is some crazy playing, then you should hear Midwest Sunday, on which Adrian's left hand is flipping back and forth between the guitar neck and the tuning machines on the headstock, changing the pitch of the strings *as he plays* and making the guitar sound like a harp, a pedal steel, and an acoustic guitar all rolled in one. There's a video on TH-cam titled "Buster's funky fingers", that's the one you want to watch. The song is titled Midwest Sunday. The original guitar tuners have been replaced with Scruggs banjo tuners* that have preset stops where apparently you just flip a lever and change the pitch of the string by a preset amount, and he works those tuning levers like nothing you've ever seen!
*Adrian has also been a guitar repair and modification tech for years and wrote one of the very first do-it-yourself books about the subject.

Adrian is my biggest influence by far as a guitar player. Not that I'm anywhere close to being in his class, but I was able to learn some of his stuff in the days before the internet became widespread.
Only trouble is having to tell everyone that the guitarist I admire is this bloke called Adrian.
    "Adrian who?"
    "Adrian Legg"
    "Who?!"
    It's really tedious.
And then of course people don't appreciate why he in particular is such a guitar titan over more contemporary guitar gods. And you can't really play the stuff you know by him yourself because they go on a bit and a lot of people don't like fingerstyle stuff that goes on for 8 minutes. And as you say, it doesn't really have that sort of hooky melodic stuff you can latch on to as just a regular person listening to music.
You kind of HAVE to already know why he's great before you can appreciate him.
I'm happy to be somewhere right now where we all appreciate him.

So many people argue about the " best" guitar player. Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Segovia, Atkins, Clarke, you get the picture. I've given that up. I now go by who I consider most complete and the reason is simple. WHO is REALLY going to outplay this man? Or Atkins, or Page, or Malmsteen? These people have reached an amazing( and totally UNFAIR) level. I first heard of Legg after seeing a video on television. Went out and bought " Miss Crow's Blue Waltz" and was stunned at the sounds he could coax from one guitar. STUNNING and have been in awe ever sense! Great video, by the way and great choice!

Awesome analysis Fil. More recently he’s playing a customized one of a kind electric with special tuning pegs so he can use the tuners while he is playing and often changing the tuning during the song and quickly changing the tuning in a few seconds between songs. It sounds leg pedal steel. Here it looks like he is reaching to change the tuning at the end.

Great to see that today you do one of the guitarists I tipped. Adrian is such an impressive player with a book full of tricks and technique. Just like you said it all looks so effortless and easy. That's a the trademark of all the greats. Like all other great guitarists Adrian can take you on a journey while he plays a song and comes up with surprises that you never thought of. My favorite song of Adrian is Pass the valium of the album Technopicker, really a mindblowing track; th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=adrian+legg+pass+the+valium

Yeah! Legg opened the original G3 in Denver in '96. Great stuff, spot on analysis--you nailed the reasons Legg sounds like Legg. In the interest of bending minds, here's Frenchman Raymond Boni and his weird combo: th-cam.com/video/b-5GiK7cwAE/w-d-xo.html

@@wingsofpegasus I would speculate he uses nylon and steel. I know I do. With that said the double stop bends sustain like steel strings. If he can do that with nylon strings I am more than impressed. Thanks again for turning me onto another great musician/guitarist.

      @@abfranklin8492 , nope, steel strings.
Adrian wrote one of the very first, earliest books about fine tuning and modifying guitars, before it really became a "thing", simply titled "customizing your electric guitar". He has done a lot of consulting and guitar Clinic work for Ovation.

Yo, Great job again Fil. You have just introduced me to Adrian Legg. Dude's definitely a picker. Fantastic talent. I abhor his headstock however. I don't know gear all that well, but that IMHO is the ugliest headstock I've ever seen. And are those felt dampers on the strings above the nut? Sorry.

The guitar headstock is ugly on purpose. The original tuners were changed to Scruggs banjo tuners, they allow Adrian to reach up with his left hand while he is finger-picking the guitar and actually change the pitch of individual strings as he is playing. Listen to the song Midwest Sunday. What he does with that guitar and those special tuning heads will blow your mind!
