Zero timeouts called in a 7 game series, zero adjustments made during/between games when it was crystal clear that adjustments needed to be made, 2 straight series blowing a 2-0 lead, buried the young players on the 3rd line and gave them no chance to develop, and the winning record looks nice but the roster has been stacked the whole time he was there. Quite frankly it was a no-brainer. He lost the room. The team looked disinterested in playing hockey by game 4 against NJ and sure there are plenty of players to blame too but way easier to get rid of the coach than an entire core.

I was thinking the same thing you just wrote. I had a huge problem with the forwards constantly making last second passes in the slot instead of shooting the puck. A lot of times those passes resulted in no shot on goal at all. Those are things the coach needs to change and either he didn't address it or, if he did, the players didn't listen. either way, it wasn't working. That's just one example of what I believe hurt the Rangers all season.

When a coach gets to his presser and says he's not going to go into the locker room and give the players a big speech after game 5? That's a coach's job. I gather from what I heard that Drury was in a shouting match about this. Nonchalant Gallant never built a structure or made the players know their roles. He shit the bed. Period. Plus, Drury gave him a Ferrari and he crashed it.

Remember when the Rangers were slumping badly at the end of last year? They had shouting matches then too and Gallant was on the brink of being fired then. Also, given what I know about the earlier arguments, I don't think the shouting match in the playoff series was about ra-ra speech. It was probably about line match ups. Notice game 6 (after the game 5 argument) there were changes and the Rangers won.

You have the right two guys on the thumbnail next to him. He was fired bc he horribly mismanaged Pat Kane from the time they got him. Sticking him w Kreider, neutralizing Kane's offense. By that one decision he wasted Kane, Trocheck and Panarin.
The second part is that he then insanely scapegoated Kane for everyone else's no-show, trying to embarrass him and disrespect him by demoting him two lines and off the top power play for games 6 and 7. This was esp funny bc Kane, freed at last from Kreider and Zibanejad, then put up two games 5v5 where he generated more offense by himself than any other LINE on the team. Meanwhile Zib and Kreider stayed horrible.
The locker room other than Zib and Kreider absolutely loved Kane and had the highest possible respect for him. Not just what he'd done in the past, either. Who he is and his game even badly injured. They knew he was still the best offensive player in that locker room. When Gallant scapegoated Kane and didn't have him in prime positions during the elimination games, he lost the locker room beyond any point of return. Further, Kane could not have respected Gallant, esp by the end. And the locker room also would have noticed that.
Gallant's treatment of Kane both in a hockey sense and a personal sense is why he's out of a job today. Well deserved. Maybe he can spend his time off looking back at the 3 on 3 OTs during which he kept Kane - the all time NHL leader in OT assists - glued to the bench for the whole 5 minutes.

Gallant’s problem was he had a team full of super stars who failed to play as a team. Look at the 8th seed Panthers killing it with Toronto. They’re not some flash in the pan who beat the all time record Bruins. They’re beating Toronto soundly. Why? Because they’re playing as a team. The Rangers had 10 times the depth in skill over the Panthers. Yet they somehow managed to lose to the Norte Dame girls school for the blind in OT 2-1.
What’s comical is Joe Micheletti said on various occasions that the team “loved playing for Gallant.” Now we hear that the team had some say in his beheading. I liked Gerard he was no nonsense, and you never had to wonder what he was thinking. It was all over face. He had a great record with NY and can be justifiably proud of what he accomplished.

I've been a Rangers fan since 1976 and have watched and rooted for many players that have worn Broadway Blue. I have even rooted for and like a lot of the current Rangers. I also don't like some after watching their play with and without the puck. And like some even less knowing how much they are paid. I have seen a lot said that Gallant butted heads with Drury. I was ok with Drury getting hired because even though JD was not only my favorite Ranger in my early days of being a fan. But he was a great colorman for them for years. Alway's thought Gorton got too much praise over a couple of moves that turned out to be really good. Their handling of the trouncing by Wilson was wrong and they needed to be replaced. Drury started out right by toughening the team up. Then he reverted, and let the grit go with nothing in return. His rental philosophy extended to this year. He didn't learn from last year's losses. Then he went the way of acquiring rental players on name recognition again this year. Everyone claiming that the youngsters never got playing time to prove their worth have forgotten that they got many chances to play on top lines and produced absolutely nothing. Same people say that the Rangers don't know how to develop players. Can anyone name a player that the Rangers developed wrong, that then went on to another team and became a superstar player with them? You same people ignore the players that the Rangers did develop who became really good players in their prime. Lundqvist, McDonagh, Callahan, Girardi, Staal, Kreider. They may not all be superstars but they didn't develop poorly, some had injuries that hampered their future play, and some we ended up getting rid of in search of greener grass. It's more about poor drafting then poor development. Now to get back to Gallant. Supposedly he butted heads with Drury. That's a bad thing? If Drury wanted to coach the team he should now take the coaching responsibilities. Then you can see how good or bad Gallant was. There are those who claim Gallant changed the lines too much. No one considers that upper management might have told Gallant he needed to put the lines together a certain way? And he ended up doing as told. But when the line was faltering he went to the lines he wanted during the game. And with Kane. Turns out he was damaged goods when the Rangers got him. And aside from a few nice passes and a couple nice shots he gave nothing to the team in terms of play and hustle. That is not Gallants fault. And I always liked Kane. I wouldn't have gotten him more because he would have been a rental, I didn't think he would be just a cone most of the times he was on the ice. So maybe Drury is the problem not Gallant. I'm curious how many of the JD/Gorton lovers who bashed the Drury hiring are now bashing Gallant and ignoring Drury. Now the second reason it seams Gallant was fired. There have been much talk about how the players out going interviews sealed Gallants fate. If that is the case they are a bunch of pussies who need to look in the mirror. Like Quinn before him, he would say that the team needs to play more North and South and shoot more. But this team never did that. I highly doubt the coach would tell the world what is plain as day to anyone who watched the Rangers play that the team needed to stop with the fancy and shoot more, to then go to the team and in the locker room and say. "Hey guys I just told everyone what they wanted to hear. You guys keep doing the trick plays and don't take the open shot because a nice misdirection play will get you a great highlight reel for the NHL Network to play tonight." If these guys interviews were the deciding factors they should be ashamed of themselves. No Grit in NY. This team is now a year by year trade deadline rental pickup for hopes of a single cup wish team. No chance of a multi year possible cup run here.

  • @SMASH948
    @SMASH948 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The players should be looking in the mirror instead of blowing up the coach. I can’t imagine what the problem is for them, other than him asking them to work harder in all three zones. I saw 18 guys that didn’t want it as bad as the Devils. If you don’t want to play for your coach, that’s on you. Take it up with him after the series. Furthermore, if you don’t want to play for the coach, then play for yourself, your teammates, and the fans. I never understood that logic that the players gave up on the coach. How about going out there and maintaining your dignity by playing even harder and winning despite the coach’s shortcomings? Players who do that can never play on my team. Whoever they are, they need to go. Don’t care who…even if it’s the
big star players. Don’t care. They gotta go.

I don't understand why The Assistant Coaches (Kelly & Murphy) were not Fired First, or, Instead. The Only Reason I see, is, that it's Likely Chris Drury Wanted To Fire Them, Gallant Stepped In, said, No!, and The Decision was Made. This, likely, explains Why They Weren't Fired Along With Him. Chris Drury Isn't A Man To Be Screwed With.

After the Rangers announced that GG would be the new head coach, I did some research to see what the "scouting reports" said about him. Basically, all his weaknesses were exposed during the playoffs.
    1. He's not a strategist. He relies on his assistant coaches to draw the game plan.
    2. He sticks too long with a strategy even when it's clearly not working, but trusts his players to "work it out". This might be fine in the regular season when you have time, but not in the playoffs.
    3. When he must make an adjustment, it takes him too long to find an effective one.
    4. He'd rather play "my guy" than some unknown guy who could actually be better.
    5. Relies on his gut alone and not on statistics. This was a source of friction between Drury during the season. More on this later.
Florida let him go because the GM was a former head coach and thought the second year of GG's tenure, the team should have done better. He thought that GG could not get the most out of his players. So he was let go despite having a good record. But note, GG 2nd year was worse than his first.
The knights let go of GG after the second year. The first year, GG takes the franchise team to the cup finals, but the second year, the Knights lose in the first round, just like the Rangers. The VK GM, Mc Crimmson, said that GG was let go, because:
"Our team is capable of more than we have demonstrated this season."
The Athletics magazine did an interview with Mc Crimmson. There wasn't one particular reason why they let go of Turk, but, “It wasn’t a specific block of games, or a specific game,” McCrimmon said. “It’s hard to put into words unless you’ve done these jobs, but it’s more about the feeling you have that a change might be needed. I wish I could be more specific about that, but that’s really how we felt.”
He also said, “We feel we’ve underperformed a little bit, and certainly that’s not to pile on at the feet of Mike (Kelly) and Gerard. But sometimes you feel a change is needed.”
So in all 3 teams, GG does fantastic his first year, and does disappointingly worse his 2nd year. If you dig a little more, you can see that GG had roughly the same issues he has with the Rangers. Cap space issues, and FA players he would rather not have picked to make a playoff run.
Seems like history is repeating itself. As far as analytics go, what I read is that Drury and Gallant were shouting at each other during the season. Remember when the Rangers were slumping really bad at the end of last year? Well Gallant was about to lose his job. Drury wanted Gallant to play the kid line more because the analytics showed clearly that the kid line was the most effective line. But, the kid line was not producing any goals, so Gallant was minimizing their time.
But, I also understand why the Rangers want to move on. I think it's harsh to say GG was "fired". I think there is just philosophical differences on how to coach a team. The Athletics article hints to that. GG seems like he'd be a great coach in a by-gone era; he's anachronistic. There's probably some personality differences and egos too. Gallant seems to be stubborn and not open to new ideas or suggestions (The analytics and adjustment points above). I speculate that GG probably rubbed Drury the wrong way if Drury made suggestions to him.
GG seems to handle NY media pretty well. He doesn't blow his top like -say- Bill Parcells would. He also handles the big-market pressure of NY pretty decently too. I think he deserves another year. But, I'm also kinda glad he's gone. I'd probably regret that last sentence.
Anyways, I think GG would make a great GM, since his focus is on how players work together and getting the
right matchups. He's more focused on people and synergies; he'd be a natural fit for GM.
    Sorry for the long post.

It almost reminded me of that season Tortorella was fired and then the next season Vigneault came in with a new system. We shot the puck like crazy, skated faster, and went on to the Stanley Cup Finals. This team still has another good 1-3 years left in them to make a run. We need a good COACH! The Rangers play definitely didn’t help his case!

Will Gallant get the Calgary job that's the question

There seems to be a desire going around the league to either promote within or grab a new younger coach so we’ll see! Still very possible!

Sounds like Gallant was almost happy to go. Thought he was a good coach though. Told it like it was why they lost. Too blunt?

I heard he didn't get along with truba & panarin didn't like him, panarin didn't do shit in the playoffs he's the one that should be gone after game 4 the Coaches & Drury had a argument that could be heard Right outside the door in MSG, if Gallant was fired how come Drury wasn't he put this playoff team together not Gallant, I'm a huge Rangers fan and he should have never been fired I'm sorry he was a good coach, well we don't know what happen we're just speculating what a bummer for Gallant.

Yeah great coach who's teams were at the bottom of the league in 5 on 5 play for 2 years, and got lucky last year after Trouba hit Crosby with the Macho Man elbow otherwise they're a first round exit 2 years in a row. Get real

Because he's a terrible coach. Can't make an adjustment to save his life. That's the reason.
