    Captain Mike, absolutely fantastic videos, you're a fantastic presenter and teacher.. you could probably make any subject interesting.. I've been fishing for a few decades, and find your videos packed with new or different methods that I haven't tried. I really love your idea of the three way on the down rigger line, and the 4' leader down to the weight.. makes so much sense.. if you can, I'd love to know which three ways and swivels you use for this setup. I fish the Great Lakes, primarily Lake Michigan, chase king salmon, trout, and have found to like heavy 15 lb weights on my riggers.. all the best!

    This is the most informative thing I’ve seen in 1000 hours of watching fishing instructional on TH-cam. I do wish he would dig into planer bridles and show how to properly make one. Anyone have a good link for that?

    Do you think I can use the two smallest sizes planers (Size 1 & Size 2) in a kayak? How deep do these planer sizes normally run? Thanks for posting this seminar! I learned a ton about trolling lures in watching 30 minutes of your video than a lifetime before that!

    Great video. A lot of useful information. Only thing disagree with is his comment about the electric downrigger only benefit is that it brings your ball up automatically. The benefit not mentioned is that if you hook the downrigg and connect it to your fish finder system you can have your electric downrigg target the exact depth that you are seeing the fish..rather than manually adjusting. So basically you can adjust faster and the faster you adjust the higher your percentage to land the fish.

    Hi Capt. Mike. I have been following along your seminar series. Big thank you for putting out this content. I watch the videos 2 or 3 times while taking notes on everything you say so that I can apply it. I was rewatching the planer video and you mentioned that you went through 3 or 4 iterations of custom builds before you were happy with your set up. Can you explain to me how you got to your current set up? More specifically can you also explain how you concluded on an 8 foot rod length. I always thought that the conventional length for a heavier rod was shorter on the 6’ range. So when you said 8’ I got curious as to the reason for your selection. Hope to continue the conversation, thank you!

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      8'0" is the right length for us. these are not bent butt rods but rather straight butt. The longer rod offers a shock absorbing factor and also makes seeing short strikes much more noticeable. Rod needs to be beefy, pulling planers up to #8 at up to 10 knots puts serious strain on tackle. Anything less will ultimately fail. More detailed in, call me. 954.942.7261 - Capt Mike

    Mike I know this is an older video now, but this was just awesome! I've got it in my head to try a test run of live slow trolling a big bait down the water column fr yellowfin next time I'm over to the Bahamas. Maybe a little football Bonita. I've got it in my head that the Tuna are still willing to eat during the middle of the day, but they only come to the surface when the light is low. Maybe it will be different if we go to them.

    A "new" bridal system that "you" (he said we) created?
    I guess you consider 30yrs "new". That's how long "we" have been using planer bridles along the central North Carolina coast. I tied my first bridal around the age of 15-17...I'm now 45.

    • @adammcgeorge3538
      @adammcgeorge3538 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mazin Fishtube they do work in a similar way, more of a Japanese design than the US style planer. Very popular in Asia and pacific islands.

  • @BassFlatsBeyond

    Do you wind the leader back on the yo-yo every time you want to pickup and move. Is there a quick method for running and gunning with planers in the spread?

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I leave the leader in a 5 gallon bucket in back corner filled half way with water.

    With ballihou you squeeze the bottom and push out the feces, then break the back, it gives the bait more life.

      You are correct and prevents the bait from washing out so fast. Good tip! - Capt Mike

    Tremendous seminar. Which line on the reels would you troll with the downriggers? Braid? Mono? How would attach the mono or braid to 12’ fluorocarbon leader? Another Albright? Friday is the big day for kings. I was thinking of using the pancake weights with the downriggers to help with resistance and blowback. What do you think? Will the Z wings stay more vertical when trolling higher speeds to 6 knots? Been watch you for months. Thank you for sharing.

    • @FloridaSportFishing

      100%, it is common practice to fish two lines off single down rigger line.

    This guy realy wants to sell that braid line. I've fished planers way before they were made of stainless steel (wood actually of the coast of Huatulco in Mexico) and way before braid with no problem and success.

    Excellent Video Capt. Mike. Question : So I've got my bait connected to my 100ft of monofilament leader, connected to a bridle onto my 80lb braid main line. The planer is connected between the bridle. At about 4-6 knots, how much braid (main Line should be let out for the long line and how much for the short line? (Basically asking how far behind the boat should the BAIT be in each scenario)? Thank you.

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would deploy approx 100 ft on the longer/lighter planer and 60-70 ft on the shorter/larger planer.....thanks for watching and please join www.FSFTV.com.

      @@FloridaSportFishing Thank you. My Friend bought me a No 32 Size Planer (sigh)-It's very big AND Heavy - WOW! Currently my trolling rod I've rigged for planers is fitted with 80lb Braid and my leader is 100ft of 100lb monofilament leader (or 60lb Fluorocarbon). However, I can just imagine the force and pressure that's going to be exerted on the No 32 size is going to be TREMENDOUS...Somehow I believe that the 80lb braid is too light. Is it? or should I use a higher test braided main line, 100 or 200lb??? Thank you in advance.

    I rig my planner on a bridal rig it is much safer instead of reeling to the planner and hand lining it in u simply reel in the planner and u put 2 loops in your line and the planner has 2 double snap swivel and u unclip the planner then fight the fish with the rod no hand lining no yoyo just let ur line out to the 2 loops clip your planner on and your ready to set your planner again plus no big coil of line on the deck u just reel it in on ur reel much faster amd safer

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the bridle system is an excellent alternative but must be rigged perfectly, if the loops aren't correct it won't trip so we decided to go the traditional way for this show...thanks for watching. - Capt Mike
