Growing Sprouts for Chickens (Progress)

- We have been growing sprouts for our chickens to provide them with more nutrients than just scratch alone, and this is our progress. Super easy way to get fresh, green goodness for them every day, and they absolutely love it!
Been growing greens for our chickens for some time. I use a 2x8 ebb and flow tray and eight 1020 trays. Every other day I place 2 and a half cups of grain in a germination jar and wash and soak the seeds for two days. I then transfer to a 1020 tray in the ebb and flow . Every two days I start soaking another batch of seeds and transfer to a new 1020 and move the trays down the ebb and flow in order. Greens are ready to harvest in a week to 10 days based on your preference. Chickens get a fresh tray of greens every other day. I flood the ebb and flow tray twice a day for about two minutes with a nutrient solution with an ec of about 2.0 and pH of 5.8 to 6.2. Great nutritious treat for our flock.Good luck!

Sprouts for Chickens.
For a larger flock, you can sprout grain in a five gallon bucket. On our commercial wheat farm, we often had spilled grain around the base of our wheat augers. This is often mixed with dirt or stones, so it is not able to be sold, but it can be put into a bucket, the bucket filled with water and set aside for a few days. The grains will get a short sprout, and when you throw it out into the chicken run, they flock to it. They love the grains with the short sprouts, and the dirt or stones in it do not matter at all.
Do you find that the chickens like it more when sprouts go longer or shorter? Would they like freshly sprouted at the 4 day mark as much as the full shoots that went 9 days?

. hmmm so for my setup it would only be 2 of these trays on top level and 2 trays on 2nd level punched with holes and 2 trays on bottom with no holes to catch water since I don't have a big back porch ... plan to do that but loves your setup but the draining water from pans confuse me ... guessing you just take pans to sink and tilt and drain..is that correct?

I like the fact that you used a generic aluminum pan and did not drill holes in the bottom. There's probably sufficient water in the bottom to keep the seeds and roots hydrated. *Did you use 1 cup wheat seeds per pan?
*Did you soak overnight and not 24 hrs?

Sorry for the delayed response! I just used a generic mason jar filled 3/4 of the way up with seeds. I don't measure out the amount of seeds exactly. And yes, I soak for at least 24 hours with cold water but have done overnight if I am using warm water.
How do you drain it? Did you punch holes on the bottom of the pan, or just tilt over?
I just tilt the pan into the sink. Lol.
Do the trays get any sun from the window and how hot is the temperature in that spot?
Sorry for the late response! They do get late morning sun for a few hours, but we are completely surrounded by very tall pines, so it is mostly shaded for a good part of the day. The temperature in that spot ranges from 65-75 depending on the season.
I have heard that longer grass it not good for them as it can form a ball in their crop. Day 6 or 7 would be max length.
This mostly refers to grass clippings, like when people mow their lawns. The sprouts stay in a mat, so they would pick at it similar to how they would pick at grass growing out of the ground - by pecking and breaking off smaller pieces. I’ve not had any issues with crop impaction in the many years I’ve been doing this. These days, I take the sprouts out between day 6-8. Just whenever I remember to do it. Lol.
That is true but you cut the grasses into shorter pieces although they are good at cutting up the grass themselves usually but I always cut it up for the girls and never have any problems.
What if these were planted in a few yards of dirt then some chicken wire placed on top? Then the chicks could eat them but not dig up roots and all.
I actually did that last year and had 1/4" chicken wire over it. I still have some wheat grass growing up through it, but most of it is completely covered in mulch/dirt that the chickens have kicked into it. :\

How does it not mold?
Sometimes it does. I just keep an eye out for it. Some people spray a *very* diluted bleach solution over the roots when they notice signs of mold or just as a precautionary measure. (The bleach actually degrades quickly into water and salt in less than 24 hours when exposed to water and light.)
Is that rye grass seed
They're wheat berries (hard red and soft white).

I used wheat and oat seeds, I think. :)
